Hahaha. That's classic Uber!!! That's going on my fridge :-)

No PoorRelative. I don't believe my destiny is to be eaten in the river. Anyway the zapper doesn't work in fresh water, and the Swan's pretty fresh on top. I reckon you'd better watch out in the Mandurah Estury near the Dawsville Cut though. I know Neil Taylor doesn't like getting out over his depth there, eh Neil ;-)

Hi Uber,
As Wanda to Boat harbour is one of your fav spots..the lifesavers at Wanda spotted and chased out to sea what they said was a large shark. But because there was no-one was in the water due to the troubles they had no-one to tell!

WOW this is all very freaky to hear considering im just about to start kite surfing. However i don't really fear a shark threat mainly because iv never herd of one around the longreef area although im sure there has been.

I was wondering if any of you have had collisions with sharks wales, dew fish andy larg mariene fish or animal causing you to crash?

unfortunately, yesterday a young lady lost her life at north stradbroke island at a popular swimming spot after being attacked by a number of bull sharks.
i was on straddie a couple of days earlier for new years, the kiting was good, and i remarked as per usual to my mates that there was no way i would swim in this spot, clear water and picturesqe as it was!(not that i swim without a kite/windsurfer/surfboard)
it borders the main southern tidal entrance to moreton bay.
i'm sure (and hope) this area will now be netted for swimmers.
it really reminds you that we share the ocean.

Hey all,
I'm new to these forums but have been checking out your shark topics.

I've recently started windsurfing (been doing it for 4 or so months) and my spot is Manly at Moreton Bay.

After hearing about that shark attack at Strady, I looked up Moreton Bay and sharks and found this: www.escapewithet.com/

Pretty freakin scary to know there's that many sharks where I'm floppin around. At the same time I've only heard of 2 attacks including this latest one, in the area. I'm really considering getting the shark shield for some piece of mind.

Is there anyone else around here who surfs Moreton? Have you seen anything, heard any stories?

Sunday, January 15, 2006. (From www.abc.net.au)
Shark attacks diver near Perth
A Perth man has had a lucky escape after being attacked by a white pointer shark.

Police say the 46-year-old was diving three kilometres off City Beach this morning when the shark grabbed hold of his arm.

Inspector George Putland says the diver managed to fight off the 3.5 metre animal, escaping with only lacerations to his arm.

"He was believed to be away from the other divers at the time of the attack and the shark attacked from behind, grabbing and biting his arm," he said.

"He hit out at the shark with his spear gun and eventually the shark swam away.

"The other two divers assisted him onto the boat and administered first aid and he was then conveyed to a waiting ambulance."

He was treated at the scene by St John Ambulance and has been taken to Sir Charles Gairdner hospital, suffering from lacerations.

Fisheries officers are searching the water.

Another boat in the area had earlier reported seeing a great white shark circling their vessel.
--------------------------------
My brother heard him interviewed. He apparently credited his survival to the other two divers who both had shark shields.

Did anyone else hear the interview?

Cronulla/Wanda beach had three Hammerheads swimming around close to shore. Alarms went off and everyone told to get out. Saw the film on TV news of the sharks which looked quite big. There's usually quite a few hammerheads around this time of hear.

There was a long interview on the radio this morning with the guy maulled by the white pointer. It grabbed his elbow. On the second attack he hit it with his spear gun but said it was hitting a car coming towards him. The shark disappeared after his buddy arrived wearing the shark pod. He said he is now going to invest in one himself.

Interesting day yesterday
Tried Woodies early but no wind. Waited round for a bit only to see what at first looked like a whale semi breaching about 300M straight off the end of the fishing groin. Several tail slaps, a bit of thrashing & few fin sightings later we thought maybe feeding dolphins But no spouts no arched backs etc.
Hmmmm bit suss I thought.
10 minutes later (no dolphin or whale spouts at all) now about 150M off the rock groin we got surface thrashing & boiling water with several sightings of very definately partial shark fin above the surface along with a very non dolphin-like tail side slapping the surface.
No hollywood red dye stained water or nightmare mouth shots but definately a frenzied feeding shark of indeterminate brand. Size also indeterminate but it certainly wasnt a little tacker
How much are those shields again

My Shark Story no. 1

I'm pretty sure it was a dolphin after the initial start at seeing a fin breach in front of me. Was out near the reef looking for waves just off the north side of Wedge Island WA.

My Shark Story no. 2

Six months later kiting at Blouberg, Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA, was tacking upwind out the back for another wave-run when something breached between me and the beach. I was about 600m out and on a tack towards it and I couldn't make out quite what it could be. So I kept going towards it to get a better look but it went back under. What I do remember was that it looked decidedly non-dolphin in movement and shape, and it was grey and pointy. I suppose if I had have positively identified it as a shark I may have felt concern, but as it was there wasn't the slightest trace, only curiousity.

As for some of the other comments on this thread:
- South Africa has such cool sharks they even have one for fresh water, the Zambezi Shark. They aren't known to be selective eaters, anything generally goes. They hang out north of Durban in the same spots as crocs and hippos, one of which also works well on a Southerly when wind at our preferred spot isn't so good.

- Sharks vs. Crocs: a big salty vs. a great white of comparable sizes I reckon first bite would win. One of those stupid seppo shows on discovery channel did a computer simulation and the croc won.

- Yeah I reckon it's a fair go if sharks got us back occasionally, I'm with Tobes and all the shark huggers.

Kiting in shark bay a few weeks ago I managed to notice a large dead beached whale and went in to investigate. Then I noticed what looked to be about a 6M shark swimming around near the shore.

Being a little weary and given I was about 3km's from Nanga station I shark tailed it out of there. Curious on the same day I saw a dugong, a sea snake, a few dolphins and numerous smaller sand type sharks. Its a exciting palce to kite if you are game !

Beleive it or not !
