Haha thats probably true Mike. Only problem is that its all shallow there. To get away from the learners you have to go out the back a bit where its deeper and the big sharkies live! Still, there would be bigger ones around nth Queens I reckon. I saw a massive ray there when the water was really clear w/end before last

Think that’s the second incident out at wartons this year, first one was a mother drowning.. very sad...

Was down at the local kite spot today and one of the other regs was telling me how on wednesday he spotted a dark shadow while out for a ses - and then two RAAF trainer planes that were flying about flew over and “shook" their wings a while latter. He said he didn’t know if it was to warn him or just for a fun joy ride but in any case the wind had dropped so it was time to come in!

Anyhow that attack is the second one I know of in Esperance, first one was on the beach we kite from by a bronzy when the surfer was out at dusk…he managed to drive himself to hopsital... never seen one myself - I only have had dolphins swim past and spook the occasional stingray. They are out there for sure but what can ya do - if you look tasty they will take a bite!!

Hey Uber was doing a downwinder from Norah Head to Nth Entrance about half way through the downwinder there was a 6 to 8 foot Bronze Whaler beside me, before I saw the shark I was realy cutting loose on the waves and crashing my kite into the water and body dragging several times to retrieve my board but after seeing the Shark I made sure I did not come off my Board.

The Shark looked extremely evil especially those big black eyes.

Dan!! Did you wish you had the zapper with you? Must of been a real buzz to be that close to a chomper? Thank gawd he wasnt lookin for a quick bite

I still have to experience a serious siting whilst kiting! I damn sure hope it isnt soon.

Gives me chills thinking you were body dragging with a chomper in such close proximity.

No I was not wearing the shark shield only really using it when I go spear fishing, Im just glad I was on my board when I saw the Shark.

When you think about it you kite and spend so much time in the water your bound to have an encounter soon, just make sure your on your board and not body dragging trying to get your board.

Hi all!

I was wondering if there were an international hand signal to advise the presence of sharks around? (like the 'tap tap' on the head to land the kite)...

Wikipaedia says: "hand flat thumb against forehead or chest: shark" when diving. Shall this signal be appied to kitesurfing? Is there another one?

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Fred

I was reading today in my boat mag, of a diver who was fishing with a speargun and was leaving the water empty handed when a shark followed him up and took the gun. (which I guess he'd be happy to rade for an arm or two)

Hey anyone know what the law dictates about the use of spearguns in WA waters. I know you have to be a certain distance from the shore but not sure what...

Thanks

Hey Uber!
I nearly hit a small shark while kiting this arvo, just outside the river mouth, saw something wiggling just ahead of me, then just missed its tail. Just a little thing maybe 1.5 metres, but it made me wonder if grandma shark might be around....
Then a little later I saw a much bigger dark shadow pass under me....
Must have been one of the pod of dolphins that started rounding up a school of fish I found myself in the middle of! Dolphins and fish jumping all over the place! One was curious and came to check me out up close. Cool!

Back on sharky stuff, read this story?

Hey Tobes!

Thats freeky man! I thought I kited over a small 2mtr sharkee at Broulee the other weekend, However it was more likely a funky sharkee shaped weed.

Nice link! check out the monster in the back of this doods truck
www.fishingkites.co.nz/newsletters/newsletter92.htm

I can never get over the size of the whites.

A friend told me a snorkelling tour guide got chomped in half about a year and a half ago. Not sure where it was exactly. Maybe WA or QLD.

So the story is that he took out about 15 people on his boat and he found a spot he thought might have a lot of interesting sea life. He then jumped in to have a quick check to see if there were any interesting fishies swimming in the area. As he rose close to the ship a massive GW chomped him clean in half and swam off!!!

Actually Uber that's true. It was at the Abrolhos Islands about 60km off the coast from Geraldton Western Australia (where the 2005 Australian Kitesurfing Campionships were held). We were just talking about it tonight at a kitsurfing meeting actually. His body wasn't recovered so nobody knows if he was chomped in half or fully eaten. It was about 12-18 months ago from memory. I understand it was pretty traumatic for the tourists who witnessed it.

I've seen a monster shark caught there off a night line (chain with a huge hook and leg of lamb left overnight).

I understand one of our local kitesurfing legends in WA is going to attempt a kitesurfing marathon from Geraldon to the Abrolhos Islands. He's a really tough bastard!

Only hand signal i know of is the diving one with the hand on the forehead. But then again if I see a shark I'm not taking one of my hands off my bar, nuts to that.

Thanks for verifying that one Graeme,
Make sure you wear your Zapper when kiting around there. Let me know of any other stories round your area. :)
Heres one:
"Cyclops" one eyed, 10mtrs long with a 4foot dorsal fin. Apparently sighted as a local legend Great White around Kurnell-Sydney. Anybody got the lowdown on this beast? Is it true or an urban myth? (Please say its a myth)

Whatever happened to the shark nets that they used to have in QLD???? I remember swimming up in Noosa and there used to be shark nets there. I suppose it's only abit of a bandaid solution and not really suitable for the whole coast :p

There are still Shark nets there. They also set baited drum lines to catch sharks.
http://www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/2920.html
Both of these methods kill "non-shark" species....as the dpi puts it.
Non Shark species such as whales, dolphins, turtles, manta rays, dugongs....

There's a good article about the arguments for and against nets here

The other day I was just entering the water at Leighton and saw a HUGE ray cruising the shallows. I stopped still to wait for it to move but then it stopped too. Then I started moving and it came towards me. Then I realised, as you probably guessed, that I was looking at the shadow of my frigging kite! What a ****ing idiot

There was something on the news aparently about a couple of Bull sharks chomping into a Pelican at Shelley Bridge on the Canning/Swan river yesterday. And I heard this morning that a shark was seen at Melville Beach (Applecross/Perth) this week. These locations are about pretty close and my local spot. Does anybody have details?

Trolling for stories I found this classic image.

www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=3379

A photograph that has been circulating on the internet showing a shark leaping out of the water to attack a helicopter, is a fake. The composite image, which claims to be National Geographic's "Photo of the Year," was spliced together from a U.S. Air Force photo taken near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and a photo of a shark from South Africa.

Charles Maxwell is a great Marine Photographer. Check out his other works here:

Enjoy

Large shark menacing Sydney's southern beaches
Michael Stothard
February 07, 2007

A LARGE shark which been spotted prowling La Parouse beach in Sydney yesterday, apparently has a "tendency for aggressiveness," and has already eaten a dog and a pelican.

“There is evidence to show that this shark has been taking animals,” said Stephen Leahy, the rescue services manager for Surf Lifesaving Sydney.
The shark was spotted by surfers at 8:30am yesterday. Lifesavers closed the beach for 15 minutes while helicopters checked the water, but were unable to find the shark.
Witness Brian Mangan told his story of the sighting; “I just went down to the beach, everything was nice and calm and then all of a sudden it was like a boat taking off with all the wake; but we could only see the fin and the shadow,” he said.
Leahy informed The Australian that shark had been “in the area for a couple of weeks now and appears to have a tendency for aggressiveness: a dog and a pelican have been taken by the shark.”
“Anecdotal evidence says the shark is anywhere between 12 and 15 feet,” Leahy continued.
Mangan, who owns the Boatshed Cafe on the seafront corroborated Leahy saying, “I definitely know about the pelican being eaten, because the helicopter pilots who saw it happen come for coffee in my cafe. They said it was a White Pointer.”
Mangan was worried about his business. “I rely on people coming swimming and then eating at my cafe. The shark has been hanging around for over a week. I hope it goes away soon,” he said.
Because of the size and aggressiveness of the shark, the normally unpatrolled beach of La Parouse is being patrolled by surf lifesavers and jetskis this morning. “We are taking this shark alarm very seriously,” said Leahy.
Shark expert Matt Jacobs, an aquarist at Sydney aquarium, said that the idea of an aggressive shark was a misnomer.
“Sharks, unfortunately for us, don't have hands, and so use their mouth to feel. They are curious and sometimes soft bodied animals, like us, can be damaged.”
“They could just be curious but because it's a shark, people think it is being aggressive,” said Jacobs.

Hi Uber,

Went for a great session down at Wanda with Moritz and Andrew today. We were the only ones out due to the gusty winds and rain squalls. I came in around the same time as Moritz and he told me he saw a big fin about in the break between Wanda and Cronulla. 5 mins later Andrew came in and had also seen a sharky. Andrew's was only a little un - about 6 feet but Moritz thought his was much bigger. Mummy and baby? Duuhhhnnnn Nuuuuuhhhhn! Duuuuuhhhhnnnn Nuuuuuuhhhnn!
