Don't worry Uber. I've got the "Shark Shield" sitting here all powered up, with a deep humming sound coming out of it like a light sabre, ready to go. I think it will work - be easy to ride with I mean. Its a couple of kilograms on the ankle but only weights 200g in the water. I have to say I am feeling more confident already even though its still only sitting on the lounge room table. I'm even planning a trip to kite in the Southern Ocean near Albany/Denmark - white pointer breeding ground near the whaling station. My father told me a story about the whaling station when I was a boy. He reckoned if you stood on the jetty and the shark thought you weren't going to fall in, then he would bite the pillar and give it a bit of a shake, just to make sure.

Graeme ur a crazy cat! Have you tried to film the sharkee shield in action? make sure you post it when you do. That whaling station sounds a bit dangerous.

Let us know how you go. Dont forget to watch the doco 2night!

Hey Graeme!

Did you see the doco? Heaps of chompings in SA=South Africa and South Australia. Wont see me dangling my cherry round those waters!

It had a piece on the guy who invented the Shark Shield. Also another guy who was a shar kee hunter who catches big mofo tiger sharks and freezes them for his shark show museum. (Reminds me of the nutty captain in JAWS 1)

Anyway their point on the Shark Shield was that when the shark is in its frenzy or really hungry or curious state that it may still bite you regardless. I guess the range of the Shark Shield would be the real deterent.

Say if the Shark Shield only buzzes 5 or 6 meteres radius a shark could still start its power strike from 10 meters before it hits the Shield zone and maybe not stop its strike. (If its a dirty 6mt Great White in a power strike????)

Food for thought.

about 4 weeks ago i was kiting with a few of the goldcoast boys on the broadwater and saw a nice 3-4ft bull shark launch about a meter out of the water spinning! not real nice when you're on a directional and have to get off it to turn it around (i cant jibe)........few hairy seconds! got me a Twin-tip the next day, "they" are out there

are you sure it wasn't a tarpon?
i'm not sure that bull sharks jump.
although it could be a dugong being tossed like a game by one of those tigers in a feeding frenzy.

Once piece of advice I have always stuck to(usually), that is avoid peeing in my wetsuit as that is how the bigger sharks home in on seals and if you do `go` in your wettie it will be a slow leach out and leave a nice scent trail for any big hungry opportunistic shark to come up and have a `looksee`

i do believe that is an old wives tale, other wise i would have been mauled by a monster long ago! i think more along the lines of, if the big man in the grey suit is hungry and you're looking like a tasty seal, you wanna hope he chokes on the first bite

I dunno about that, the shark`s snout is bristling with receptors and sensors and seals being mammals will pee in the water and evolution takes advantage.
Besides a wettie begins to hum in the back of the car on a hot day.

I sent this message to the friendly folks at shark shield ;)
Just out of curiosity what would happen if you attached a shark shield to a
shark?
and in return this is what i got

Hi

Thank you for your email below. You would very likely be arrested by a
Fisheries Compliance Officer for deliberately harassing a protected species!

The field emitted by the Shark Shield does not harm the shark, providing it
can get away from the field. If the Shark Shield were to be attached to a
shark and it could not get away, it would very likely have a massive
muscular spasm attack and die. We have not conducted such a test, as we do
not want to deliberately harm sharks.

Space monkey! your an evil genious!

What if they tagged as many sharks as possible. Then when anyone wearing a shark zapper comes close it zaps the Bejebus outta them. Therefore in time and breeding they will have it programmed in their deepest psyche, these varmits will learn to stay away from us friendly non bitey humans.

Reminds me of that show called MONKEY MAGIC and he had a ring around his head. When ever he was naughty, Tripitaka(His bald androgynous master) with two fingers close to "its" lips would utter a prayer and Monkey(Great Sage Equal to Heaven) would jump around in pain holding his head.

After reading that I'm just wondering now if I'm going to have a massive spasm attack wearing one. Its going to be my first run of the shark shield this Sunday with our opening season downwinder. I'm going to find out if it zaps my trailing foot, gets tangled in my gear, or just gets caught on the reef. If there's enough wind to get a boost then be watching out for the lightening strike.

gday graeme,
mate, good luck with the shark sheild. I wore one of those (not sure if its the same brand) when filming in the water up in Gero for the Nats, and if I forgot to turn it off walking back across the reef, it would zap the sh1te out of me, not very pleasant. The sheild I was wearing had to be submerged for it not to zap ya, so Im hoping you dont have the same problem kiting with one.keep us posted

Hey Gavo,

How I laffed after reading your post. You must of looked like a Thunderbird puppet from a distance. Sounds like it emits a pretty powerful buzz.

Maybe you could attach it to your Abs when your watching TV and do a workout aswell.

I am going to post a question to SHARK SHIELD stay tuned!!!!

Ahh I gotta get me one

Here is my question:

Dear Helena,

I am very interested in your product. I would like to
use it as a deterent in the water when Im out doing my
morning swim in the ocean. However I like to swim
naked, If I attach this device high up on my thigh
will I zap my genitalia?
I dont want it at my ankle because it will effect my
kick stroke.

I already suffer shrinkage when departing the water, I
do not really wish further shrinkage or electric
shocks.

Also is the unit powerful enough to cause me to have
muscle spasms? I dont want to walk out of the water
and look like I am having a fit.

These are strange but serious questions that will
influence my purchase and future purchase of my other
morning swimmer friends.

I appereciate your help,

Regards,

Wilbur

Here is the Response:
I am buyng one there is hours of fun in this device im sure.

Dear Wilbur

Thank you for your email and your interest in our Shark Shield
technology.

The only product in our range that would suit your needs would be
either the
Freedom 2 or 4 unit. I would perhaps suggest the Freedom 2, as it is
slightly smaller than the Freedom 4. The Freedom 2 has a 2 hour
rechargeable battery, whereas the Freedom 4 has a 4 hour battery.

The unit was designed to be worn on the ankle, and can be worn quite
safely
when swimming naked, providing it is worn as designed - on the
ankle/calf
area. However, placing the unit up higher on the leg will cause an
unpleasant sensation, not just to your genitalia, but also to the
muscles in
your legs. The 2M antenna, which protrudes from the unit, houses two
tubular stainless steel electrodes. If these electrodes touch the skin
you
will receive an unpleasant zapping sensation. By placing the unit up
higher
on the leg, it is likely the electrodes will touch your skin.

Your option is to either leave the unit on the ankle/calf area, or
place it
on a buoy, which you could tow behind you.

I hope this helps answer your query. Please do not hesitate to contact
me
should you have any further questions.

Saturday morning 24/9/05
A surfer at Scarborough Beach (Western Australia) was attacked early this morning by a small shark while surfing about 120m from shore. He fought the shark off by repeatedly punching it before returning to shore. It is thought that the shark, estimated to be about 1m in lenght, was a Bronze Waler. "I was smiling because I thought it was a seal swiming near me" said Brad Satchell 44. "I couldn't believe it when I realized that it was a shark and started coming at me. I just kept on punching and punching at it".

Maaaaaate. This is where WAKSA's holding opening season downwinder with free beer and bbq tomorrow. Do you think that will be one of the conversation starters on the beach tomorrow lunch time. Hahahhaha

I'm a changed man since I got my Shark Shield. Fearless! My mates at going to be sick of the sound of me. "Bring It ON!" "Can't wait to get in the water". "Let's round up some s h a r k". "Last man left in the water Wins". They're going to start calling me "Predator". And to think only a month ago I would have been worried like hell about tomorrow.

OMG stop being such a *****.

I live in Adelaide, 2 ppl have been killed on our beaches in the last year by BIG sharks!

I still go out whenever i can you cant let the possibility of a shark attack put you off. Your more likely to get a frea gust like that guy in the Naish Vid (13 Daze) and get killed by being smashed into the ground.

Hey Gfmike,

I had a friend live in Darwin for a year. He lived in an apartment overlooking the water. He showed me photos and it was amazingly beautiful. Cystal blue waters and blue sky.

I asked him if he went for a swim or saw any kitesurfers out? He said hell no. Crocs eat humans like Tic Tacs up here, then if its not that its being stung by the zillion stingrays that hide in the sand.

I think he said there was heaps of jelly fish too. BUGGER!

Hey I might ask Shark shield if their product zaps crocs away.

STAY TUNED!

Hey graeme. I was going to suggest you could get double value here by dropping the ankle strap and instead attach ur new long black tube by inserting one end securely into the anus . Once ur anywhere near the water the nervous clamp will ensure the unit is held firmly in place. Then as it hums & vibrates out its electromagnetic pulse even if you do get mauled at least you will be mauled with a smile on your face.
But then, on second thought, I figured "Nah - silly idea". At the first sight of a passing set of jaws the old sphincter would instantly turn into an auto sure-fire quick release leaving you totally unprotected right when you're needing it most.

Yeah when I was living in Cairns central there were heaps of Crocs. I'd seen taxis hitting big crocs just on the road the airport! Every now and again aircraft have to do a go around because of Crocs coming onto the runway/taxi areas. If you think you are walking around the water just off the Cairns esplanade you are also wrong. Crocs have been sighted lazing on the flats right next to the lagoon where all the euro backpackers feed/wash/toilet and sunbake in the nuddie. I wouldn't be suprised if Kite surfers have sighted Crocs at Yorkeys Knob even though the water does get a bit choppy for crocs.
