but protecting a species doesn't allow for natural selection to take place.... take a look up in the NT, after croc hunting and poaching got out of hand and supposedly croc numbers were dwindled down to low levels, they protected them to all but aborigionals for traditional hunting.. and now there are so many that rivers like the Katherine, 300 km inland are infested and there are more crocs there now than ever before, and the more crocs there are, the further south the Big Old crocs get pushed by the smaller younger more aggressive crocs.
So if they are kept protected forever, with no natural enemies, eventually they will take over all the good kiting spots and then ...the WORLD, unless the great whites which are also protected start inhabiting further and further north until there is a croc Vs Shark battle.

Shouldn't you be working on trying to pass your HSC instead of making an idiot of yourself on here Space-between your ears-Monkey!
We had a bounty on the Tasmanian Tiger, that did the trick! Also on Wombats, the Northern hairy nosed wombat is now the rarest wild mammal in the world. Vermin! Shoot the B@rstards! Where's my gun?

Agree Tobes, should we kill every human that drives a car or motor bike? every snake, spider, scorpion, centipede? Every box jelly fish, blue bottle, croc, blue ringed octopus, tiger, lion, hippo, elephant, jaguar, mountain lion, bulls, cows, horses, rhino, ape, etc, etc? What about ban swimming pools, rope should definitely be banned (don't want to hang ourselves)? That means we can't use lines to fly the kite? And seeing people drown in swimming pools, rivers, oceans, lakes and just about any body of water swimming is banned also.

So no kiting, no swimming, no sharks and no animal that poses a threat to humans. Now just have to kill off every man killing plant... Somebody grab the Raid. Actually that's been banned too!

This thread is such a waste, kiting rules, sharks rule the ocean. GET OVER IT! You are guaranteed to die if you put petrol in your car, let alone driving it or crossing the road.

Gees,
don't like it...don't kite. The less the number of kites on the water, the better.

Besides which, after a recent trip up north, I am now more scared of whales than sharks! My mate on a tack out nearly got hit by one when it breached right in front of him. One breached in front, one right behind him and one downwind of him.
Awesome creatures, but imagine a semi trailer landing on top of you!

Right on Dachopper. Now lets see if the stats start to become meaningful. What is the proportion of (surfers+windsurfer attacks)/(Total surfers+winders). What is the proportion of (swimmer attacks)/(total Swimmers). I'll bet that shows we are a 100 fold more at risk than a swimmer.

having said that.. one dark night opposite mount henry bridge in the canning river , down bullcreek way, i find myself getting rubbed up by
" a big fish atleast " whilst dragnet prawning on the deep side , at 10 pm in 4-5 feet of murkey water ,at first it pushed on my leg so hard i thought it was a tree stump, stuck my leg out to " feel where it was to manoeuvre the net around it, and there was open water, suffice to say i have never run underwater dragging a net so fast in my life and havnt been back in the river to prawn since & that was 2 years ago

A guy got bumped by a small bull shark(1.5mtr)today at Dolls Point, Just at the main rock groyne I was scared at first but I went in anyway...I think...Im cured

No bumpies for me. I almost did poos but he said it was a small one. I did however not spend much time in the water body dragging...Ive learnt to be super quick into my footstraps and off I goes.

Its wierd never heard of anyone getting bumped at Dolls before. It did rain Sunday and Monday so the water was a little murky.

I did laff at a friend fanging downwind..then I stepped on a broken bottle.(Karma) No Cuts..I was very nimble. I wish the mofos wouldnt chuck busted beer bottles on the beach.

Seeking information about the Tiger Shark encounter at Noosa.
My understanding is that Josh - the owner of the Noosaville Kite Shop was kiting with a mate from the mouth of the Noosa River towards Tea Tree Bay when a drop in wind strength caused their kites to fall to the water. Allegedly during this time a Tiger Shark of large proportion circled them moving in closer on each completed circle. It was reported to me that if it was not for the intervention of some Lifesavers training on the beach, Noosa would no longer have the services of the Kite Shop owner.
Can anyone confirm the validity of this alleged encounter.

ps. UBER, I believe you are the resident SHARK HUNTER on the forum - are you able to shed any light on this issue.

awaiting with interest
many thanks
windchaser

Found out some more details after talking to Josh.

The story is as you have stated Windchaser. However when the incident happened it was about 6.30-7.00pm It was pitch black! Northerly wind was about 25knts when they started kiting then they hit a wind shadow close to a cliff.

Josh's friend's lines got tangled in a bouy so they were floating around trying release the lines for a while

However they were about 100mt when the shark was actually sited. Josh said the shark's fin was about 50cm long(wonder how big the sucker was?Any marine biologists?). He claimed that he has been kiting there for 4 years and never had any problems with sharks before.

Josh said the Surf club were training on the beach and paddling out near them doing drills. So they were lucky to get picked up.

Moral to the story - Dont kite at dusk

Gold Coast: check out the last Gold Coast Sun community newspaper page 7 ( Wed, Nov 2 ):

Man-eater ALERT for Broadwater!

" ...up near Sea World in the main channel and just opposite The Grand (at Labrador) of a night time on the high tides we've seen slow moving tiger sharks in excess of 10 or 12 foots (3-4m) long..."

hmmm, time to design a shark repellent kite!

Hey Surfnet,

I was up there recently. I kited up at Loders. It was high tide and my friend said there are chompers in the creek next to the Trailer Park?

It was high tide also, Hard to launch around there, Specially when there are kiddies and old ladies fishing.

Seems there are heaps of tigers sharks in the northern waters. Your water is about 3-4 degs warmer maybe thats why.

I also saw these big blue jelly fish washed up about 25-30cm diametre. Never seen a blue jelly fish before.

hows this for paranoia (if thats how it is spelt), 2 4m Great Whites were spotted off the beach where that Nick Peterson Guy was killed, West Beach, Adelaide and they stopped people from sailing and it even made the news.

Apparently the two whites were just playing around, on more serious news apparently a seal wandered up our local beach yesterday. Where there is seals, sharks follow.

It Happened in Durban 2002(not sure where that is) Anyway he got bumped off his board and his board got chomped but not him. The Shark was a Mako.
