silviu, crossing port phillip bay, solo, across 4 shipping lanes, is never ever going to be safe, i dont care how much experience you have or how many gadgets.

Maybe I have met you silviu, i remember when i first started (start of november last year) a guy telling me that he went to altona or williamstown alone (from brighton).... Probabily wouldnt be too hard to get someone to do a safe winder with, not across shipping lanes.

Stamp,

I do not disagree with you. But look at this, driving on a highway is never ever going to be safe, i dont care how much experience you have or how many gadgets in the car.
But we are still driving cars or riding motorcycles.
And you know what, my accident happened on the beach, not on the water!
And one more thing, when you are on a colision course with a shipping vessel or a ferry... gee they are big and scary enough to notice them and give them the way
And to be honest, it never happened to me to be on a colision course even not with a speed boat or a surfsky.
However, I will not recommend anybudy to do what I am doing, unless a good knowlkedge of the area and the layout of the shipping channels.
And one more think, am doing it on the weekends, when navigation channels are not that bussy, if not deserted.

O yes, and the guys from Middle Brighton Life Saving Club, all know me very well.
As about the quick release... after my mishap in December, when all happened in less than 3 - 5 secs, I did not stand a chance to reach the QR, nor to release it.
So be aware, those thinks happen so fast if you blink you may miss them
So rehearse and know your equipment without thinking.
Cheers

Right, just when you though this subject was dead.....

The answer, in one line is; Arcs auto zenith primarily because the centre of of pressure is foward of the centre of gravity. Where most LEI kites have a heavy leading edge tube, arc kites have their center of mass further back. There are other factors at work also, for example, tip choke makes kites inherently unstable steering-wise, this can however improve response time at the expense of requiring continual active steering.

From the horse's mouth. Thanks, horse.

This explanation is basically the same as the one reached on page 1 of this thread. Center of gravity behind center of lift makes the TE droop at the wing tips (when the kite is not at zenith) which gives rise to positive angle of attack on both wingtips and therefore kite tends to rise to zenith.

I think its pretty unlikely that an inflato would do the same unless it was very deep C shaped and had excessive weight at the TE of the wing tips. Anyone think of a C kite like that?

Cool I've been away for 2 weeks and had little access to computers, basically because there was too much wind and I was too busy kiting, or doing other more important things, and I come back to insane weather and this thread still on the front page!!!
Cool!!!
I have not bothere to read the pages that were posted in my absence, but I bet a gazillion that Slave has still not posted the identity of his mythical auto zenithing inflato?

And Hawaii was excellent, thanks for asking.

Apparently,
Rumour has it that some of these new batwing style kites can auto-zen.
Something about centre of effort being shifted in relation to centre of gravity.
Dig ?

So you see Steve,
I was right,
in a funny kind of way.
lol.
