Yeah they need Guns, they're always at war.. Maybe start by building a society not based on violence and war might have been an idea.

A Cuban, a Frenchman, an American, and an American lawyer are riding on a train. The Cuban begins praising one his nation's most famous products.

"In Cuba", he says, "we make the world's finest cigars. Just smell this beautiful hand-rolled cigar. Furthermore, we make them in such abundance that we can waste them with impunity". Saying that, he tosses the cigar out the window of the speeding train.

The Frenchman responds, "Oui, that is quite true, and in my country we make the finest cheeses". He displays a hunk of fine cheese to the others and says, "France is famous for its fine cheeses, and we produce so much that we too can waste them without a thought." Saying that, he casts the cheese out the window of the train.

The American gets up and throws the lawyer out the window.

How many American tourists does it take to change a light bulb?

Fifteen. Five to figure out how much the bulb costs in the local currency, four to comment on "how funny-looking" local lightbulbs are, three to hire a local person to change the bulb, two to take pictures, and one to buy postcards in case the pictures don't come out.

You will be wishing they didn't ban guns when;
1. Someone or a gang with a gun or even a knife breaks into your home and assaults you and your family.
2. Well into the future during a breakdown of civilized society a roving mob comes to your house and tries to take all your stuff and assault you and your family and the police seem to be busy elsewhere.
3. In the future the government tells you that because you are a certain ethnic group that has economically exploited another ethic group your family and most of those in your town are required to relinquish your homes to the disenfranchised ethnic group.
4. Because someone from your ethnic group has killed someone from another ethnic group it must be made even, a random lottery has determined that your family is required to surrender one member for extermination.
5. Because a neighbor has informed the regime that you have made subversive comments you and your family are required to report to a re-education camp.
6. It has been determined that too many male babies are being born, therefore you are required to surrender your son for sex reassignment surgery.

Sound really far fetched?
Well all of the above have already happened excepting the last one... as of now.

Are you talking about the taking of the Indian Nations or the Palestinian people?

Or the Afghans, Iraqis, Somalis, Vietnamese, Koreans, Panamanians and various other south american countries?

And for all the peace loving greenie types here is a couple of your heroes:

“If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.”

history will look upon the act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest.

I think in a crowded cinema if someone came in shooting and everybody had guns no one would have walked out.
Picture a dark crowded room..
Bang Bang Bang....
100 people stand up and pull out their revolver and aim....
Who are they aiming at ???
The poor guy who has just done the same thing as them...
The carnage begins.....

Just saying...

Don't take it personally BB, we are trying to have an intelligent conversation about an incident we have no first hand knowledge of, and a culture and country most of us have never been to (me included). Everyone on here is an expert at everything, I'm pretty sure that's in the Seabreeze constitution.

If that doesn't work we rely on sledging and taking the piss out of each other (constantly), something your namesake should be familiar with . Hell this topic got to six pages before the jokes started, normally is takes about two hours and half a page, that's got to be a new record?

I wonder if NASA astronauts were carring guns on the Moon mission.
Just in case they will approach insubordinate locals

Im not sure of everyones opinion of their family and friends; but if I were to own/carry and firearm for protection, it wouldn't be because I were fearful of these people. I imagine astronauts are a pretty close knit group of people, and with the extremely low numbers, the chance of one going off the 'deep end' is quite low. Plus, every kilo sent into space costs what, $4000? (ie: scrutinised)

That said, Im not so sure of some of the inlaws... JOKING!!!!

Interesting vid showing what can happen when you disarm good citizens before the criminals. Same thing may have happened in Colorado.

FWIW, Australia's gun laws over-regulate firearm ownership. Considering we have a licencing and firearm registration system, diversion of firearms to the black market isn't an issue here. I'd appreciate being trusted to own a simple 4-5 shot semi-auto shotgun, or a .22 semi-auto. Instead of being treated as an untrustworthy citizen with proto-criminal status (in my view this is as much the media's fault as the governments).

Lisa Nowak, the nappy lady...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Nowak

Lisa Marie Nowak (n?e Caputo) (born May 10, 1963) is a former American naval flight officer and NASA astronaut. Born in Washington, D.C., she was selected by NASA in 1996 and qualified as a mission specialist in robotics. Nowak flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-121 mission in July 2006, where she was responsible for operating the robotic arms of the shuttle and the International Space Station.
Nowak gained international attention on February 5, 2007, when she was arrested in Orlando, Florida, and subsequently charged with the attempted kidnapping of U.S. Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman, who was romantically involved with astronaut William Oefelein. Nowak was released on bail, and initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, which included attempted kidnapping, burglary with assault, and battery. Her assignment to the space agency as an astronaut was terminated by NASA effective March 8, 2007. On November 10, 2009, Nowak agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to charges of felony burglary of a car and misdemeanor battery.

The good bit

Nowak drove from Houston to Orlando, Florida, on February 4-5, 2007. She packed latex gloves, a black wig, a BB pistol and ammunition, pepper spray, a hooded tan trench coat, a 2-pound drilling hammer, black gloves, rubber tubing, plastic garbage bags, approximately $585 (USD) in cash, her computer, an 8-inch (20 cm) Gerber folding knife and several other items before driving the 900 miles (1,400 km) to Florida. Early police reports indicated she wore diapers during the trip, but she later denied wearing them.[19][20] On February 5, 2007, Nowak went to the Orlando International Airport, waited for about an hour in the baggage claim, and then proceeded to the airport parking lot, where she located and confronted Shipman, who had just arrived from Houston by plane.[21]
Shipman said that after arriving, she was aware of someone following her to an airport satellite parking area.[22] When she got into her car, she heard running footsteps and quickly locked the door. Nowak slapped the window and tried to open the car door, asked for a ride, then started crying. Shipman rolled down the window a couple of inches after which Nowak sprayed the pepper spray into the car. Shipman drove off to the parking lot booth where police were summoned. Several Orlando Police Department officers arrived minutes later, with the first officer observing Nowak throwing a bag into the trash at a parking shuttle bus stop. Nowak was subsequently arrested at Orlando International Airport on charges of attempted kidnapping, battery, attempted vehicle burglary with battery, and destruction of evidence.[23][24][25][26] In a handwritten request for a restraining order against Nowak after her arrest, Shipman referred to Nowak as an acquaintance of a boyfriend but did not identify Oefelein, and also claimed Nowak had been stalking her for two months.[27] Nowak told investigators she was involved in a relationship with Oefelein which she described as being "more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship." Citing evidence of elaborate planning, disguises and weapons, police recommended she be held without bail.[27][28][29][30]

Congratulations! I've no experience with either of those firearms. Only a few weeks ago I got a Beretta 686 U/O, as my first shotty was falling apart (another thing that sucks, a reasonable U/O is twice the price of a semi-auto Especially when its going to get roughed up over time hunting). I like rabbit too, coincidentally Im deep frying some for dinner tonight KFC style They were harvested with a 40-50yr old Tikka .222, last Saturday evening.

They decided they shouldn't be in the community as it is safer for the community as a whole, guns can be stolen like any other item so the idea is that they take them out of circulation all together and then tere is a lower likelyhood of them falling into unsafe hands.

No one is judging you as a criminal (actually quite the opposite, they have given you a gun license),they are just lessening the likelyhood they will fall into criminal hands.

Thats one example, and it didn't happen in the relative safety of the space station. Im sure people would feel safe enough to be with family/friends without a firearm for protection, if they were as isolated from society as those in a space station. Astronauts already trust each other with their lives. What was the relationship between Nowak and Capt. Shipman like, did they know each other well or were friends?

Do you trust all the thieves/crims in your city, who break into houses with yours?

Im actually glad you reminded me, had a laugh remembering the news coverage

As for the dangers involved with different types of guns; I have a pump action .308win in the safe thats accurate and fatal at 500+ m and spits out 5 projectiles pretty quick, but can't have a shotgun with the same number of shots thats generally less than lethal at 50 yards. My issue with the ban is that it was a blanket ban, irrespective of the putative threat to public safety. Including shotguns (less than 5 round capacity) and low powered rifles (.22lr) was over stepping the objectives of increasing public safety in many a peoples view.

Well all of the above have already happened excepting the last one... as of now.

You sir are on drugs

Why do you say that Doggie? As he said, all of those (except #6) have already happened - last century in fact. Between Adolph and Joseph they became common place, and the citizens were disarmed in the lead-up.

As for #6, have a look at the Chinese one child policy, and what happens there. #6 is all but happening too.

I had never been enamoured with Yanks, but I must say that most of my preconceptions were completely shattered after a couple of month long trips there. Their football game is still crap though .

Why is it that you can have a perfectly normal conversation with these right wingers, then after about 5 minutes they just suddenly flip into some kind of weird, irrational crap about how "they're coming to get us", "they're taking over", "The governments our enemy", the "UN", the "Jews", 9/11, fricken "lizard people"

Despite the rantings of many on this thread, no one has been able to reasonably justify IMO, how the "need" to own semi-automatic weapons (not the right, but the need) can be justified by 'civilians'....

Just to be clear, it's the AK47/AR15/SKS stuff; high calibre, powerful weapons...the ones that usually get used/owned by the military. Go on, tell me why someone needs to own one of them?

You've obviously missed my point, so I'll ask a different question:

Why do many Americans feel the "need" to own military style/grade weapons such as AK47/AR15/SKS or similar weapons, indeed larger calibre/more powerful weapons?

Rights to own acknowledged, but what's the actual "need" to own?

And please, don't tell me that deer/bear/feral animals need to be hunted with such weapons....
