It seems that the laws over there are a bit out of date.

I would like to get Marks comment on this.

I think Australia and the UK have good strict laws in place.

There are two schools of thought: There are too many guns over there, and there aren't enough guns over there.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

If people didn't have so much access to guns though, it's much harder to go on a killing rampage in a cinema with a knife...

One of the main problems is the black market, no gun rego so if a gun is used in a robbery or murder it cant be traced.

Hack on JJJ was talking to people who had been to the US and had a gun experience ie, spoke to people who had them, saw guns there or was shot at.
One bloke had gone into a pawn shop and the old lady behind the counter showed him all her guns and even said she couldnt remember how many she had

It's too late now.

Make guns illegal, all the good people hand them in, then it would be a free for all for the crooks.

So, to break away to the obvious tangent, if the number of guns in the US has gone past critical mass and even the idea of a mass buyback and destruction program is ridiculous, there's the other side of the equation to consider. Why are there so many US citizens who decide to take their guns and go on a killing spree? What is broken in their brains? What is broken in their society?

^^^ Or do what they did here - hand in semi-autos to be crushed, my father (farmer) handed in his shotgun and watched it put through the bender, only to have the law lifted shortly after!

I think they need to pull back and look at the biggest picture, education and health care. The people are deperate because of the lack of education for the lower classes and health care for the poor so they dont have to knock over a 7-11 to get enough cash for medication, or they are drugged out with no hope and that harks back to education access as well.

While America does have the most, it isn't just them,

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/07/20/the-worst-mass-shootings-of-the-past-50-years/

That news article has a list of shootings, sure America has a few, but Tasmania still has one of the worst, Finland has had a couple.

The gun law thing is a tough one. In a country like Australia, I think something like this is unlikely because I don't think an actual criminal does it. It's gotta be a crazy person.

Surely no normally minded person would do this (im not defending them either, they should be locked up for good). And I can't see some bikie member/some other crook going on a rampage like this killing innocent people.

I don't know the stats, but I'm guessing a small percent of Australians own a firearm. Giving it less chance of landing in a nut jobs hands, making less chance of a mass killing.

Canada has more guns per citizen and nowhere near the violence. There is as much violence in many other countries too, of course. More even.

In addition to affecting levels of trust and civic engagement, inequality in society has also shown to be highly correlated with crime rates. Most studies looking into the relationship between crime and inequality have concentrated on homicides-since homicides are almost identically defined across all nations and jurisdictions. There have been over fifty studies showing tendencies for violence to be more common in societies where income differences are larger.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_inequality

Economic inequality is the most obvious difference between societies with/without violence. I'm open to other possibilities, but I've never seen any. Of course economic equality is the last thing the U.S. will ever consider, because communism.

Why is it that nearly all of these shootings take place in a country where there is a heavy government agenda to disarm the people? Was for a long time a supporter of disarmament, changed my tune now.

I think that most would argue that the danger is from their own military and the fruit cakes who control it!

I stand corrected.

George has some insightful things to say:
www.twitlonger.com/show/if2nht

edit: ...HOLY ****ING HELL!!!. That's guns per 100. I initially read it as per 10,000. 88.8 guns for every 100 people.

Of the top 23 rich countries, U.S. has 20x more gun deaths than the rest of the list combined. www.politifact.com/factchecks/2012/jan/27/jim-moran/rep-jim-moran-says-us-gun-homicide-rate-20-times-h/

I think they need more guns.

What is the purpose for having a gun at all?
If gun is to protect you from another people then what about another end of the scale ?
Countries that people don't have guns at all .....
Is it safer to live then in US ?

No, I wouldnt think so.

The UK has stricter laws than us and have less gun related crime.

The cause of all these problems is obviously people moving away from God. Gay marriage, womens rights, equality, abortion, Muslims, atheists, all that. It's like in Ghostbusters when everyone was mean to each other and all that purple goo started building up in the sewers.

As previously said i think it's way to far gone in th US unfortunately.
Probably the best thing is for all the good, sane people to carry a gun and when some f#cked up whacko whips out an arsenal hopefully someone will pop him first...

I didnt know that at the time, I think I was 18 or 19. It was the first gun I ever shot. Just target shooting when we lived in the NT, I would have been 9 or 10 at the time
