The problem is from the look of it many kite boarders come from a non sailing or surfing background. They have no concept of water rules or ettequette. The fact as Aldo writes, too many of them are not taught these rules when they learn.

Honestly it doesn't take Einstein to work out if you are going at 30 or 40 km/h being pulled along by a big kite attached with long strings, you should keep away from others.

Personally I will try and sail in areas where kite boarders are not around. If they turn up I will remain civil however if someone acts like an idiot and hits me I will get out my knife from my harness pouch and cut their strings so I don't get tangled up and drown.

I sail in Geraldton where there are loads of Kitesurfers and I've never had an issue with any of them, mainly because we tend to stay out of each others way, but there also seems to be a fair bit of common sense.

The idea of taking a knife out with me, or putting something sharp on my sail etc seems ludicrous to the extreme, or am I missing the joke, you blokes are taking the p155 aren't you??

I'm sure yachties, catarmaraners and surfers all went through this phase when windsurfing started. Why don't you just put your knives away and go and have a chat on the beach, maybe then a bit of respect will be earnt by you and the rules of right of way can be established.

adio (your right) BUT
Thats why it could become a real fked up sport ............Freedoms one thing rules are another.

Regulations everywhere.......................Luckly windsurfing escaped with at all that bull****.

I remember police trying to enforce LIFE JACKETS for all windsurfers ....luckly the pioneers RIP SPAGOLLI, SPINKSY ....told them where to jam it.......and just sailed off into the sunset, Then JUMPED IN THERE CARS smoked it up and gave them something to really to do.

PS I LIKE reading on this forum AND seeing kite meres unfold, watching there commrads, running to assist ......its .better than reality TV it guttsy and real and alive dood.

PS
ME mate had a hangglider made of old 2mm tude , put together with winged nuts and bolts...........and was very convinced it needed to be flowen.

VB SHOOTie aussie ......hv a go.

btw has anyone run into issues at flat water spots where say you are sailing on a starboard tack (hence have right of way), it seems that some kiters who are at a port tack never seem to give way. They all wanna just keep cranking upwind and heading straight at you, I usually end up having to bear off and give them space cause I'm not stupid enough to wanna get creamed by a kite.

Do kites have difficulty bearing off?

The answer is "yes"

The nature of kiting requires "edging" of the board to hold against the kite and create power. The edge of the board is used rather than fins to go upwind.
Bearing off requires releasing the edge, then relying on 2" fins to hold .
They are probably not cranking upwind and heading straight at you, they are thinking they will squeeze above you.
If they are beginners, they will be locked in and probably only just in control.

I have noticed that some windsurfers will try really hard to "sqeeze" upwind, whether they are on Starbord or Port.

You will just have to learn to give kites some room. They are here to stay like it or not. Personally I try my best to stay away from Windsurfers, surfers etc.

F^&k that - if I'm anywhere near kiters I carry a line knife. If I have right of way and a kiter causes a collision his lines are going - any damage to me or my kit and there will be hell for him in every possible way. Don't kite if you aren't prepared to learn the rules - same as you wouldn't drive a car on the roads if you don't know the rules.

Other windsurfers - well that's another story - if someones on a speed run I'll get out of their way irrespective, same if the WS is having control problems or heading for a gybe. WS I respect, and the same goes for surfers - they follow the ettiquette. Kiters I have NIL respect for - haven't seen one that has earned any yet, irrespective of how cool they think they are - sums up the reason they cause so many problems.

Better put on the flame suit now - I've done it again [}:)][}:)]

No trouble with that as long as they put there kite up as I go downwind of them.
It's what the local kiters here do, and I give way to them the same as I would to a fellow windsurfer, well may be I give them a few meters extra just to be safe, but none of them expect me to go 50 meters downwind of them. But I guess the local guys are mainly ex windsurfers and know how to fit in.

Trouble occurs when somebody decides, "there's kites out there, must be a good place to learn"
And hasn't got a clue about safety, wave ridding, or what other people are doing out there.

We've also had windsurfers out in the break that didn't have a clue, just wanted to run back and forth thru the impact zone, while kites and other windsurfers were trying to go down the line that was also dangerous, but not as bad as neck high kite strings.

As said before education and good will is the key.

question to Nebbian. whataya reckon of the difference in kiters in WA and QLD. seems there's just more people out on the water over there, thus less room ? Thus more hassles/agro.???? theres certainly a lot less animosity here in Brissy......

I get the feeling I'm close to the line to being banished from this site for a while - so WTF one more:

I think I will start taking a dvd camera down to some spots (PP etc) and start filming all the kiting incidents. Put them together and diarise etc for the inevitable public summission time calling for Kiting bans.

Sorry to all those that make a living from venturing to the dark side selling that stuff.

The main difference is that over here the windsurfers outnumber the kiters the same way that kiters outnumber the poleys over east.

I've noticed that the majority of kiters in WA seem quite competent, easily able to avoid accidents and tend to know how to use a small break without upsetting the other water users. Unlike over east where in my opinion they tend to be more aggressive without actually having too many skills. Then again I haven't sailed at woodies yet so my opinion might change [}:)]

Out at Avalon today there were two kiters and three poleys, the kiters would sometimes pass within a metre or two of me but it wasn't a problem as it was obvious we were both in good control... I've had some rather 'interesting' experiences at Shearwater involving people who weren't in full control of their kite.

Anyway that's my opinion, many others may well disagree but that's how I see it.

The "problems" between kiters and windsurfers are more likely to be from ignorant aggresive attitudes of nongs like Tony C !
The kiters aren't really doing anything wrong. There are some windsurfers with an attitude of " If they come to close to me .I will cut their lines! "etc. Then they go out of their way to try and force right of way .

Theres plenty of room for all. You have to fit in.

I understand your pain,it must be difficult indulging in a worn out sport and watching kites planing all the time and getting massive air !

As for trying to get kites banned, the powers that be can't really differenciate and will probably ban Windsurfers too !

That's funny!! Real funny!! "Getting massive air" doesn't count for much when you can do it within days or weeks of starting kiteboarding, does it???? You're basically waterskiing and bungee jumping from a giant kite, gee whiz, big deal.

A good kite instructor will get you from zero to "hero" in just a few hours. Five hours, tops, to be doing it reasonably competently. At last, there's an easy way to be "edgy" and "radical" for all those people who've always wanted to do something cool like surfing or skateboarding, but found it was just too hard...

Just pay your money, pay attention to the instructor, and you too can be one of the cool elite!!

READ the damn thread, then! Is it so hard to figure out??????

BTW, are kitesurfers "cranky" with windsurfers too? Why? Because we don't take up enough space, or because we don't go hurtling along out of control, or because we have some notion of courtesy and right of way?

Pull your head in willy, i dont have enough time to waste on your dribble. I used to wind surf .... lots. i enjoy kiting more, but i also keep clear of windsurfers and surfers etc and i dont fel the need to attack the sport. If kites were not invented i would still be windsurfing.

Hahah!
Kiters don't have any problems with windsurfers !

Like I said, some windsurfers have problems with kitesurfers purely from jeolousy !

Get over it. I did.
I windsurfed for years, then got sick of watching kiters ripping it up in 12 knots. gave it a go and never looked back.
Oh,and its not as easy as you believe !
A good instructor will get you up on the board after a few hours, maybe. There is still a lot to learn after that.
