I'll be heading down somewhere quiet in Western Port on Sunday at dawn - I'd expect with that sort of swell there should be enough waves for everyone.

You never know I might get down to Western port. If you go head to Zapper point the next point towards flinders from the Pines. We found it works pretty well on the lower tide but still breaks good as it gets deeper.

I'm almost sure I'll be down the west coast though!

Brooko, before you tell us all and show pix next week of where you surfed I'll tell you now that I wish I was down your way! It will be absolutely firing!

Our new pup smashed our borrowed camerea (wifes parents) last week, so pics may be hard to get, see what I can do.
But yeah It will be pumping down here, reckon wt could be all time and some novelty breaks in the bay that only work on huge swell, so that could hope to thin the crowd out. Will be surfing my self silly all weekend!

Hmmmm. With predicted 10' swell I am wondering if the point at Flinders Harbour might not break. I often sea very tiny, clean looking wave there.

Perhaps with a huge swell it might break but be protected from the wind by the cliffs. There's no mention of a wave there on the hoax coast site.

Think your referring to the wave known as "Farm" Gorgo, its in a couple of the surf spot books, needs a high tide but I've never seen it working and never checked it in the right conditions.Let us know how you go cause maybe its the Hoax on the Hoax coast,
Cheers,
Camo.

I'm not sure where the farm is either, maybe Brendan can shed some light.

There should be tons of breaks opening up on Western Port Bay on Sunday morning with that swell. The only problem with picking a new break is discovering a hazard the hard way. I'm kind of liking the thought of Merricks though.

Don't go to Merricks, reason being it's a shortboarders novelty wave and we should probably leave it to them. If you mean the merricks I know anyway but Merrick/Balnarring point could be good but might be wind effected a little.

The farm is right at the start of flinders driving from point leo direction. Look for Rest st on Google maps and its the point to the left as you look back towards point leo.
It's a fastish right only good on a high tide. Can be fun but probably more suited to short boards.

I'll post a link to the spot on google maps soon.

From what I know it's called the Farm cos when your driving along Frankston Flinders Rd you can spot the break for about 5 seconds looking across a farm/big open cleared paddocks.

I've only ever surfed there 3 or 4 times and never had it that good but I've heard stories about "this one time it was like..." you know what I mean. When I've surfed it I have seen the potential but just unlucky i guess.

I just marked on the same map link the spot that I think will be good tomorrow arvo. Sunday might be too small. But tomorrow considering wind might be the only spot semi protected in WPort.

I was thinking of the point right in the harbour on the back side of the gunnery. Even with a small swell at the Pines you still see 1 footers rolling in and they're clean behind the cliff with the naval base on top when everything else is wind affected.

Arhhh....interesting!

Never really looked there or checked it. If you're down that way get a photo or 2.
It would be great to find a new wave in such a close location. We would have to call it Gorgo's!

The swell is massive down here. Apparently too big for Roadknight! When the tide starts coming in you will see some BIG waves coming through Western Port. Crunchies in the 6ft area I'd imagine.

Novelty breaks today for sure. Tomorrow could be different but the swell looks like hanging around till early tomorrow. Trealors or THE FARM! could be good this arvo.

Their will some good shots of Winki from this morning I'd rekon.

I'm heading down Western Port tomorrow and plan to be there right on dawn. I'm visualising the whole coast is going to be firing - anyone else planning on heading down that way tomorrow morning?

I regular surfed today down western port and swell was huge. Well not huge but huge for Wport. Merricks was around 4ft so Crunchies would have been 6ft+.

Merricks had 60 guys in the water (stretched between 3 take off points) at one stage and by the time the tide came in and the waves were at there best 45 guys had left. So I ended up getting some good waves. BUT....

I surfed for probably 2 1/2 hours and got maybe 10 good waves and some average ones. On my SUP I would have got 30+ and they would have all been good! I'm almost done prone surfing unless it's not crowded or Mentawais or something. I will still tow remote spots though.

Not sure of plans tomorrow. Will have to see how much swell drops overnight.

I let you on my new secret spot - Merricks, you tell me not to go there and next thing I know you are surfing there with 60 of my best mates!

Seriously, where did they all come from - I've never seen anywhere that many people surfing down that way?

What are your thoughts about breaks further inside the bay - what breaks do you think may be working tomorrow at dawn? I've seen a break down at Somers which I think would work in a good swell. What's the lowdown for dawn?

I went down today thinking that even if I didn't surf I wanted to see what a 10'+ swell looked like.

Merricks was packed with all the car parks full.

The Pines looked like Armageddon. The main break was about 200m over from the normal position and bommies breaking out in the bay. Waves everywhere. The car park was full and cars were parked halfway up the road at the top. Dozens of guys at every break all up and down the coast.

I drove to Flinders Harbour and there was massive waves breaking all over the place out the back ... and nice clean waves on the inside. There was a crew in a surf boat rowing about the outer reefs.

I had a pleasant hour riding clean 2-3' waves with two beginners on short boards. Similar wave to the Pines with a nice reform on the inside. Some nice sets came through but the wind got a bit strong and it was hard to keep position let alone catch waves. I got half a dozen good waves in the first half hour and only a couple in the last half hour. Definitely worth a visit if other breaks are too crowded or too big.

Every place has a novelty wave, in Torquay it's Fisho's and today it was breaking and busy as. Western port has Merricks. On a good day at Merricks 5 or 6 years ago you would get 4 to 8 guys out but over time the word has spread. Now you get about 10 or 20 rippers and a heap of average/intermediate guys.

I think the internet is the main reason why it gets busy. Swell forecasting sites are getting so many hits and people are onto big swell events well before they hit. 7 or so years ago you had to know how to read maps.

I wouldn't SUP there as to me it's a shortboard novelty and today for instance SUP would have been out of place and frowned on. Maybe it will change down the track. Maybe I'm wrong about the whole thing!

As far as options tomorrow morning it's a hard call for Wport due to tide. If the wind is light maybe zapper point (next point towards flinders from pines) if the swell hangs around. If I head down that way I'll give you a call.

Yep ... but the other guys were out there before me so I can't claim to be the first to surf it. It's not a bad little break and I think it would be ridable on more than a mondo swell weekend.

4-5:00 The reef would get dry at low tide so the 2 hours either side of high tide would be good, just like the Pines.

There's a heap more reefs a little further out so there's plenty of room for noodling about on a SUP.

I surfed Point Danger (super tubes) this morning with a mate. Was so foggy we couldn't see the break. So we paddled out anyway cos there was definately swell.

But it was terrible! Easterly lump running through it. Should be better tomorrow morning is anyone is down that way.

Guys , the break your talking about at the back of flinders, is called the cove. This breaks best on a big sth easterly swell very fickle, and not one to get to hyped about. In Bnaccas terms a real novelty wave.

Thought I'd post this email I received from BOM regarding the Cape Sorell buoy whereabouts if anyone uses it for their surf forecasting. Was surprised I got a reply actually.

Cameron

It seems as though the power has/is failing. We are getting more powerpacks made up and buoy should be up and running within a fortnight.

Regards

Mal

Hi,
Was wondering when the cape sorell buoy will be back online,
Cheers,
Cameron.
