So the plan is for this to be a 40km paddle but the course is entirely wind direction dependent. The only set and non negotiable parameter is the finish, which has to be at Sandringham Yacht Club where we will have a huge party BBQ and drinks at the end. If the weather gods are kind, the intention is to run the event as a bay crossing from Portarlington. This event has been approved by all manner of authorities and there are specific approved safety plans for crossing the shipping channel if that eventuates. The reason for limitations on number of paddlers allowed to enter is that substantial boat support has been arranged, but the safety plan caters for maximum of 50 entrants. The organisers are encouraging teams to run relay. There is a cost to enter and it won't be cheap, but the idea is for entrants to get sponsorship from friends and family like with a 40 hour famine or walk against want.

Each entree (solo or team) will be required to raise a min of $500 with family and friends sponsoring you (or your team) and this will mean at least $25,000 will be raised for the Sandringham Hospital.

We are looking at a dawn (or pre dawn) start in perfect Autumn weather with a group finish early to mid afternoon.. That's one hell'ova long paddle.. But easy do'able.

Jonathan did it last year and it took him about 6 hours at a leisurely pace across the widest distance across the bay.

There will be heaps of support boats.. Heaps of rest stops.. and heaps of fun.. It's gunna be mad..

Just a heads up that there is a big Triathlon on that Sunday morning in Portalington (2000 or so competitors), so may need to consider an alternate starting point. There will be some road closures and of course the foreshore will be crowded. I guess it will depend a lot on the wind forecast on that day.
Tragically Jono and I are signed up for that Triathlon (school sport) so will be thinking of you guys and we ride and run the hills. Guess we could add the paddle at the end, a nice lazy quadathlon!

There is NO definite starting point. It depends 100% upon the wind direction. Draw a line from the set finish point (Sandringham Yacht Club) along the wind direction, and that's the start point. It could be St Leonards, it could be Indented Head, it could be Point Wilson, it could be Werribee South, it could be Mornington, it could be Port Melbourne. Heck with a honking westerly, we could even go from Geelong.

Spoke to the organizers today and it sounds like a great hoot,

It is not a race the key is to paddle as a defined group and make the distance.

I was really impressed with the thought put into it and the backing this charity event has received.

They have dotted the i's and crossed the t's with all the key authorities including POMC and it will be a huge amount of fun!

The Mad Paddle is definintely on. We have boats from Sandy Yacht Club escorting us, The Coast Guard are providing support. Hampton Life Saving Club is also involved. Port of Melb have given permission to cross the channel. Yachting Victoria are going to assist in escorting the final leg. Numbers will be capped at 50 boards. You will be allowed 2 paddlers per board. Entry fee will be $50 per paddler. This cost will go towards fuel for the escort boats. Each paddler will be required to raise s'ship. We have a great line up of celebrities who will be joining us on the last leg. Please encourage your friends and family to join us at the BBQ and silent auction after at the SYC. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Sandy Hospital. Registrations will be accepted on line next week. Thanks for the interest!

Today's the day to register for 'The Mad Paddle' to make sure you don't miss out.. and here's some more info.

You can log onto this site to register.. Here.. www.trybooking.com/BEPK

There is a limit of 50 boards only.. with each board being either.. a solo entry.. or a team of two paddlers using the same board.

Each person paddling will pay a $50 entry fee (to help cover fuel cost of support boats) .. PLUS a $250 donation to Samdringham Hospital.. So even in a team of two paddlers each person will need to donate $250.

The $250 donation can either be paid by the paddler themselves.. or.. as most people will do it be raised by getting sponsors from friends, family and workmates.. Their donation can be paid direct through a simple process to Sandy Hospital and be claimed as a tax deduction.

I'm sure the 50 board entry limit will go very quickly so if you don't want to miss out I recommend you get in quick.. I see this being a big moment in SUP history here in Melbourne and this event being a yearly event.

From the Organisers:

Be Part of History - March 18
Paddle Across The Bay

Registrations are now open at www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=20680& and www.trybooking.com/20680 for The Mad Paddle. This is a charity "down winder" across the bay finishing at Sandringham Yacht Club.

Imagine crossing the bay, with not only the Coast Guard and Hampton Lifesaving Club as backup, but also an escort vessel, with medical support on hand! Sandringham Yacht Club are providing escort vessels.

We are planning to start the event at around 5.30am at Indented Head, with Werribee River and Mornington as contingent starts. At over 30 kms, this will make The Mad Paddle the longest organized event of its kind and the first authorized and supported crossing. Port of Melbourne, Regional Channels Authority and Parks Vic have authorized the crossing of the shipping channel.

Act fast!
The Mad Paddle will be capped at the first 50 paddlers (teams and individuals) who register. Teams will consist of maximum 2 paddlers, sharing one board. Choose to paddle as an individual, or part of a 2 member team. No problems if you don't have a pair, we will find one for you. Where possible we will be matching paddlers in terms of ability. Stronger paddlers will be matched with weaker paddlers. Remember it is not a race. It is about fun, safety and paddling!

Each paddler will be required to raise a minimum of $250 (fully tax deductible) to participate in the event. There will also be a $50 registration fee. The registration fee will go towards fuel costs on the day. Some of the escort vessels will be using up to $500 in fuel.

Free courtesy bus to the start for the first 50 paddlers that register!

After Party!
The paddle will finish at around 12 noon with a family BBQ (drinks available) at the Sandringham Yacht Club, complete with live and silent auctions. Everyone is welcome!

Charity
ALL funds raised will buy much needed equipment for the Sandringham Hospital.

Support
We are fortunate to have the support of some high profile local Bayside residents to act as ambassadors for the event: Mark Bradtke,(who is also paddling) Sally Cockburn (Dr Feelgood and Healthy Parks, Healthy People Ambassador) and local comedian Tim Smith MCing at the BBQ. Tammy Van Wisse and Andrew Robb have committed to participating in the last leg either as a swim or a paddle. Yachting Victoria is also providing last leg escort. We also have strong interest (awaiting confirmation) from some AFL players and other high profile athletes. Always looking for more - the more the merrier!

Just incase the bay isn't glassy on the 18th March what training do you think we need to put in? Downwinders at 15-20 knots or more? Heard there are already 20 teams entered.

I don't think doing down-winders will help you get in shape for it as much as just flat water paddling will.. Doing a few runs up to St Kilda and back from Sandy at a leisurely pace should get you in shape for doing it solo.. Also start considering Camelbak's and sun protection and maybe even foot wear for such a long paddle.. I'm thinking even in zero wind a straight run across will take at least 3-4 hours with regular short stops along the way.. I won't be expecting a tail wind that early in the day.. It's going to be great fun.. We might even do a test paddle across one day soon so we can get a better idea what we're in for and how long it will take... Remember it's not a race.

Indented Head to Sandringham is 34 km so I'd be allowing 5 hours in no wind and that's going at a decent, steady pace.
