For the last two days I have been motoring around the Point Nepean, Queenscliff area to get a feel for the place, both days arriving at the heads an hour before slack on the ebb.
Drifted around for a while fishing with a whole slimey mackeral just off the bottom with no takers. Also trailed two lures, one deep and one on the surface.......not a single hit! Too cold for the Kings but I thought i would hook a few salmon. The highlight of the trip was seeing what looked in the distance, like a sailing dingy crossing a kilometer inside the heads. Looking through the binoc's it turned out to be a 15 ft ketch rigged tinny complete with lee boards and a small outboard. The wind was a steady 5 to 10 knot breeze from the north and once across, she sailed east straight up the shipping channel. Forgive the pic quality as I only had my iPhone with me.

The only drama of the trip was when a catamaran approached the rip two hours after slack, attempting to make an exit against the tide. I could see she almost came to a stanstill and knowing there is a strong easterly set as well, was wondering if the skipper will turn back and make the attempt at a more suitable time. Not so! I had her on Marine Traffic and was about to radio as she approached the reef and Corsair Rock when Melbourne Radio gave her a call warning the skipper she was approaching the shallow water and suggesting they head north. The skipper replied he was about to head north but instead hoisted the headsail and made headway at 2 knots. Judging by the track, I reckon he passed very close to Corsair but being of shallow draft had a bit more room than a keel boat.
