Hi, Cruising Helmsman magazine did a thing about insurance essentials in their March edition that might point you in the right direction for insurance. They surveyed several companies and listed the results etc....

Hope it helps.

@Lex: Could you maybe scan the results of the insurance comparisons for me? That'd be awesome... I just tried to buy the magazine online, but they wouldn't deliver it outside Australia. And since I'm still in Europe, it'll be hard to get that magazine here. A thousand thanks

Dont have a scanner sorry...have a basic lap top.

I dont know if the magazine has a web site that might be useful but hey dude you got the insurance company's names now and a computer so do a little research for yourself... I have pointed you in the direction now its up to you.

Do you in fact have a yacht and are you going to sail it to Australia or ???

The net is a mine of information ... all you got to do is go some searches.

Okay dude I dont know what your doing but your earlier post says ...

'' I've just moved to Australia and I would like to know some things, since I come from Europe and do not have a clue about any sailing "business" over here ;)''

Now you say you are not in Australia ... so what gives ???

I am new to this forum and am always willing to help out like I did by answering your questions to the best of my abilities but at least you could be honest. Get of your arse and do your own research.

Questions I am happy to answer if I can but spending my time researching for you isnt going to happen.

You will find lots of Aussie sailors, friendly and willing to help but be genuine and be real.

I think we need to send out the authorities to find Hangtime, he has not replied to the forum for just over 23 hours and for a man like him who always has plenty to say and brag about that is strange to say the laest. I think those wenches on his cat are mutineers and have taken over the boat (one could only hope) and are doing bad things to Hangtime, Time to call the Coast Guard.

Hey im here, I dropped those fat and ugly girls off in Airlie Beach and am picking up some good looking ones at Townsville tommorrow.
Poor things had some great sailing and island hopping but on the last 2 days they got 3 meter swell and a 3 meter sea, Very rough and they turned green for some reason then a mad storm with rain and lightning made life interesting.
Next stop orpheus Island, Hinchinbrook Channel, Cardwell , Bedara Island, Drunk Island, Mission Beach, then somewhere after that.

yep you're right... i was (still am) at work and didn't have the time to write that much. I already have a house in australia and it's all set (if you say it like this when everything's finished)... however the most important thing is still in Europe: ME I'll move within the next few months, can't tell when exactly right now, cause I got lots of work to do here.

anyhow, you helped a lot! thanks for that, your job is done

The Channel is croc and sandfly hell. A lot nicer around the outside. Zoe Bay on Hinchinbrook with a hike up to the falls is an almost mandatory stop but watch out for crocs.

Drunk Island is only that until about 6 or 7 pm as the bar on the spit closes early after the day trippers leave. I think you will have trouble getting into the bar at the resort.

While you are in the area you should go out to Bowden Island which is just a few miles south east of Bedarra.

It is a magical spot and really well worth the detour.

As you go further north Mourilyan Harbour is great but you have to wonder how they get sugar ships in there.

The Frankland Islands are idyllic and pristine.

For fabulous snorkelling and diving go to Thetford Reef 10 or 15 miles out from Fitzroy Island. There are a few moorings out there belonging to the commercial operators but right inside the reef is a great little lagoon with a sandy bottom.

You should have no trouble negotiating it with a catermaran. I used to take my Peterson 42 with a 7'2" draught in there on a regular basis.

The resort on Fitzroy used to be yachty friendly and they have a BBQ buffet that was fairly reasonable. However if you are in that area why would you not be trolling your Macca Spoon and pick up a juicy mackerel.

When you get him, give him a tot of rum so he doesn't splash blood all over the place then gut him and stuff him with onions, garlic, bananas or whatever you have on hand, spices and a bit of oil. Wrap him in alfoil and take him ashore to the camping area and cook him on the BBQ. Yum!!

what do you mean by self insured
LexA said...

I have always been self insured so cant recommend anyone but the companies listed were ...

Insurancemarine-online.com
Oceanic zinsurance brokers
Nautilus Insurance
Trident Marine Insurance
Topsail Insurance
Club Marine
QBE Insurance
OAMPS Insurance Brokers

I think thats about all that were listed...in no particular order and I have no idea who is good and who is not so good... or if there are other companies to maybe consider.

Good luck with it ...

@ rodward - lots of cruising people dont carry boat insurance for a variety of reasons so accept that anything that happens comes out of their own pocket hence the term 'self insured'. I didnt coin the phrase but have seen it used quite a bit over the past year or two and I fit into that category. Mind you some marinas' and slipways wont allow you to use their facilities unless you can show a current certificate of insurance but I havent found that to be a problem.

@ Disralei - Whats your problem dude?

@ JimmieD - Cruising Helmsman magazine maintain a web site at - mysailing.com.au Its free and you can subscribe to their free weekly e-newsletter on the site as well.

@ hangtime & Cisco - yep a cruising forum would be great.

Re:- Making this thread a sticky at the top of the forum.

I have sent a PM to one of the forum administrators in relation to it but there has been no response on the forum or by PM.

Maybe somebody else might like to do similar in order to catalyse some action????

In the meantime we can keep it near the top by continuing top post to the thread.

Damn I hate the spell check in Google Chrome. It is all American spelling. Anybody know how to fix that??

I am sure you will not regret it. Zoe Bay was written up in "Cruising Helmsman" quite a few years ago and that is one of the things that prompted me to go there.

The hike up to the falls is not long (an hour??) and if you do it we are expecting photos of naked nymphs bathing under it.

The anchorage is not terribly flash especially if there is a bit of east in the weather.

With your cat though you should be quite OK in the south hook of the bay if it blows from the south. I am sure Alan Lucas has written it up in his book and it is described in "Cruising North Queensland" if you happen to have a copy of that rare little gem.

Remember we are looking for photos of flash flesh here, otherwise it did not happen.

Hey Lex! Thanks again. One last question then: since you can't scan, could you maybe tell me the issuing or edition (I don't know the right translation of it) for the magazine in which this comparison was? Like 03/2011 or something you know? That would be great!!

@ JimmieD - You picked it well ... the issue was March 2011.

You will also find an article in that issue titled The Day My Life Changed Forever - (battler loses everything on a sandbar), I wrote that article, its my story about the loss of my catamaran last August off the mouth of the Burdekin River in North Queensland. I lost my boat just 6 days after rescuing 2 guys whose boat had sunk off Brampton Island in bad weather.

I have had lots of experiences on the water off the Queensland coast, some good, some great and some downright bad and ugly but damn I love the cruising lifestyle and although I am doing it real tough at the moment, it shouldn't be too long before I get back on the water once again.

fair winds and smooth seas,

Hi guys - sorry we can't be onto things a bit quicker, doing the best we can.

As the traffic in this forum is pretty slight, and I'd imagine cruising posts even slighter, maybe just give it a go for a while & see how it goes?

Not sure there is enough topics to warrant a whole new category just yet .. maybe prefix your topic with "Cruising:" and see how it all pans out. If lots of traction, can start a new forum.

I sort of agree with Laurie. Providing someone gives it a bump or better still an on topic post at least every fortnight then it wont fall below #10 on the page.

Hi Laurie
Thanks for your reply. I know you have your hands full but i really think a cruising forum would work, Heres why..... The cruising community is quite large and "silent " by way of the chosen lifestyle but everyday the laptop gets turned on and SEABREEZE is checked, Decisions are made on passagemaking for the day or staying at anchor. If Seabreeze is not the main source of wind information it is almost always used as a secondary source.
When i meet cruisers from other countries i always tell them to get onto Seabreeze for wind forecasts but theyre usualy onto it already .
A forum on the same site would work, There are so many unique to Australia topics that could be shared that dont get discussed on foriegn forums.
There is an avenue to get in first as you did when you first started seabreeze, I stumbled upon it a day or two after you first started the site, As a keen kitesurfer i always used the kiteforum that was started by Toby in Germany, It was the most popular one around and the Seabreeze one was a hardly used, I dont even check the other one now , I only use this one as its very popular.
Another example is this- There are around 5000 Hang glider and Parraglider pilots in Australia, They all check seabreeze! A forum for airsports would take off on this site. I use this example as i know the numbers are accurate, 5000 is a lot of advertising credits?
There are more cruisers.
These are my thoughts, Sorry for my bad grammar.
Warren.

I have to second what hangtime is saying.

You just have to look at the Land Yachting Forum to see how this site has taken off. There you will find North and South Americans, New Zealanders, Irish, English and even Spanish people posting on a regular basis.

In this Sailing Forum most of the posting for quite some time now has been by cruising types.

Making the "Cruising Forum" thread a sticky is not an unreasonable request.

I think that we do have a cruising forum. Its just titled sailing. Have a look at the Sailing topics on page 1. More than 90% are what could be called cruising specific. If you make the Cruising Forum post a sticky then all the specific questions as threads will be lost cause people will think that is where to post them. eg best haulout yards, could be stuck in with recomendations to flush an outboard with seaclear navigation advise. Lets just keep the cruising forum thread to pictures of hangtimes crew. When someone has another interesting cruising story or anecdote let them start a new thread, otherwise it all eventually gets too jumbled. And if someone wants to ask a quetion about 18 foot skiffs in Adelaide let them do it on "our" cruising/sailing forum.

Actually it should probably just be called Sailing/Yachting. Cruising is just part of that. Plenty of cruising only forums already covering the Pacific region if your after specific advice and there are hundreds of forum members on these lists. Even Sailing Anarchy has a cruising section with hundreds of Australians, even residents of Darwin that could answer "hangtimes" need for cyclone advice.
