Gets my vote.

Weather here is rather ordinary, so it's a little maintenance this weekend.

Hope to get away next weekend.

Fitted an Eberspacher diesel heater for the coming winter, have already given it a couple of goes. Luxury to wake up in the morning to a nice warm boat.

Cheers

Dusty (KenM)

Anyone know of a smoke detector/CO detector similar to a battery operated household unit. I have a gas detector mounted in the boat to monitor for explosive lpg fumes but get concerned when warming the inside of the boat while baking scones in the oven. Sometimes use the old flowerpot over the gas burner as well but generally by the time you have cooked a meal, boiled water for the dishes. baked scones or heated up a steamed pudding and boiled the kettle for another cuppa you have to open the hatches. Everyone starts to feel nice and warm and drowsy, and.....a CO monitor would be good.
by the way I moved my boat from the Tamar Yacht club at Beauty Point to the old seaport marina at Launceston over Easter. Its a real nice upmarket marina with old world Tasmanian hospitality but what a shock when the tide goes out. The entire floating pontoon and every single boat is lying in the mud. Gives an even greater English village appeal to the whole area. The Tamar is a very nice cruising ground for wives to come along.

Im sending my thumbs up from 20 miles ESE of Magnetic island with a 15 knot breeze, Spinnaker up, Sunshine, On autopilot, 9-11 knots boatspeed and a smile on my face.

tell us about the hardware and service provider you are using to get internet access offshore. Maybe if its Telstra Cisco's face will be a purple hue from the green with envy and red with outrage +=

Hi Frant
Ive got a simple telstra dongle (prepaid) nothing fancy, A lot of people have had bad experiences with the big T but for what i do its the best coverage by far, So im quite prepared to live with a potential evil nasty providor, only thing is... Ive Had a pleasant run with em so far.
Sitting in Horseshoe Bay Magnetic Island and its a beautiful day, Just got news that 2 people i know (both younger than me) have fallen off their Perch due to Cancer in the past week.
If youre dreaming of getting "out there" Just do it! Life is good.....

Thanks Hangtime for taking the bait, you have thrown a little life into the forum with your bragging and photo dubbing (quite clever for a man at sea) No seriously I was thinking to myself that this was just another boring forum as each time I logged in there was little update to replies. its good to see the likes of SandS, rodward, Frant and others replying so quickly to you Bloody joyous life. Sail well, take care and keep us poor
miserable land based sailors updated with photo's and your escapades (photo's of the girls only)

Cheers.

I sailed from Tweed Heads to Townsville last year between April and September. I used a laptop with a Telstra 3G stick for my internet connection and the only place I had real probs was Island Head Creek and the Percy Islands. I sometimes used a 5m USB extension cable when at anchor to give me a little extra height for better connectivity.

I had more problems with my mobile phone, (Optus) than my internet. Mind you I only used the internet at anchorages, but some of those were pretty remote. I bummed along, doing 40 to 60 miles a day when I was sailing, just coast hopping...staying in various places for days sometimes.

Loved the trip and am looking for another boat to buy at the moment.

Hey everyone,

I've just moved to Australia and I would like to know some things, since I come from Europe and do not have a clue about any sailing "business" over here ;)

1. When does the sailing season in Australia start and end?
2. If I want to insure my boat, what are the best or most common yacht insurance providers?
3. What are the most popular boat shows and where are they?

I'm a real cruising and sailing fan and that's why I'd like to know all that :) I'd be really glad and thankful for your help!

Cheers
Jimmie

The sailing season doesnt really start and finish here.
You just go north in winter and south in summer, then copy/paste copy/paste copy/paste copy/paste copy/paste copy/paste........

I would prefer not to recommend any insurance company
even though they are a necessary evil. All are covered by
a code of conduct, so just find the one that suits your price
and type of sailing you want to do.
As for boat shows, I'm also not a fan, but others might say
the Qld one is pretty good.

hmm ok... what do you mean by "covered by a code of conduct"? english is not my mother tongue, so this seems a little "spanish" to me

and maybe you can just name a few insurance providers... you don't need to recommend. my problem is that i don't even know where to look for them.

Hi, Cruising Helmsman magazine did a thing about insurance essentials in their March edition that might point you in the right direction for insurance. They surveyed several companies and listed the results etc....

Hope it helps.

I have always been self insured so cant recommend anyone but the companies listed were ...

Insurancemarine-online.com
Oceanic zinsurance brokers
Nautilus Insurance
Trident Marine Insurance
Topsail Insurance
Club Marine
QBE Insurance
OAMPS Insurance Brokers

I think thats about all that were listed...in no particular order and I have no idea who is good and who is not so good... or if there are other companies to maybe consider.

Good luck with it ...

Sanctuary Cove the Brisbane Boat show is coming up May 19th to 22nd this year and its pretty good. Better than the Sydney one by what I saw. Might find some insurance brokers there as well.

As to sailing, when I have a boat ...(I am without at the moment), I usually head north in late March and head back down south in late October. I personally use Bundaburg as the central point when I say head north or south... Lots of great sailing in either direction and lots to explore.

An alternative from heading south if you find yourself in Cairns or Port Douglas in October, is to consider going on to Indonesia - Thailand instead of heading south and do your maintenance work up there ... labour costs are far cheaper up that way but you do have to pay close attention and supervise what you want done well. Easy as to haul out and antifoul, let the locals to the hard work for far less than what it costs in Australia. Having said that we do have a few good places here to do the work yourself if you wish.

Hope the above is helpful to you ...

JimmieD, Your profile is a little blank. What kind of boat do you have and what kind of cruising are you interested in?

I get Cruising Helmsman magazine monthly and there is also a mag called Afloat that is free at a lot of boating places that is pretty good.

Know nothing about super yachts and dont have an interest in them either.

I think we need to send out the authorities to find Hangtime, he has not replied to the forum for just over 23 hours and for a man like him who always has plenty to say and brag about that is strange to say the laest. I think those wenches on his cat are mutineers and have taken over the boat (one could only hope) and are doing bad things to Hangtime, Time to call the Coast Guard.

Hey im here, I dropped those fat and ugly girls off in Airlie Beach and am picking up some good looking ones at Townsville tommorrow.
Poor things had some great sailing and island hopping but on the last 2 days they got 3 meter swell and a 3 meter sea, Very rough and they turned green for some reason then a mad storm with rain and lightning made life interesting.
Next stop orpheus Island, Hinchinbrook Channel, Cardwell , Bedara Island, Drunk Island, Mission Beach, then somewhere after that.
