The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is conducting its annual Around Green Island Marathon on Saturday 17 December 2011 at Manly in Brisbane.

Windsurfers and Kiteboarders are invited to complete in the event.

Download the Notice of Race here:

www.rqys.com.au/wp-content/uploads/11-ROUNDGREENISLAND-NOR.pdf

The courses will be set across the wind to suit slalom sailboards and kitesurfers. It will not be an upwind course.

The Notice of Race indicates the area of Waterloo Bay to be used for the event.

The race will be of marathon length, but will not go around Green Island.

It is anticipated that the course will be a numbers of laps up and back with the total distance to be travelled around 25 nautical miles.

The fastest windsurfers would expect to take 1 hour to complete the course.

To participate, you will need to register at:

www.rqys.com.au/marine-sports-amenity-building-now-operating/

and look for Around Green Island Marathon.

Do we (sailboard class) need to be there so early for the registration/briefing, or is there a separate one for course 'C' a bit closer to the start time? Cheers.

Competitors are to preregister at http://enter.rqys.com.au
Otherwise, registration is between 10:00 -10:30AM Saturday 17 December 2011.
If you preregister, you can skip the registration, and you only need to turn up early enough to sign on, rig up and make the start at 14:00.

Yes, there will most certainly be rescue craft.
RQYS have a flotilla of start & finish craft and rescue boats.
Start/finish boats on duty each weekend included 2 shark cats and 40ft foot cruiser. The rescue boats are 6 to 10 rib inflatables 12-20ft long.
All boats are in 2 way conversation with each other and a shore based operations team at the clubhouse at Manly. RQYS has its own VHF channel to conduct it racing/rescue efforts.
I volunteer on the RQYS rib rescue vessels each fortnight. My young kids have been racing BIC Techno 293 all over Waterloo Bay ever Saturday afternoon in the sailing season in winds up to 28 knots for the past 3 years. Yes they have to be rescued every so often (hanging onto 7.8sqm sails) when unexpected storms blow up or gear breaks. However, I don't worry about them because of the professional/safety conscious approach the club has to conducting events.

I think that was because of your behaviour at the bar on previous occasions Richie?!?!

It was a little oversight actually, you needed a special number for the gate but I only found out after it was too late to let people know.

Are we going to be told the "special number" this year before the race or should I just try the old "0000"

Not sure about special number perhaps icarbon can answer that. I do know that if you duck into reception when you get there and tell them your there to participate in the event they will give you a pin code to get in and out for the day

Well as long as no one tells RichieFish or ScottF, entrants can drive into the club grounds through the first boom gate beside the motel. Proceed 50 metres ahead and pull into the left to park, and duck into reception. The staff at the counter will sort you out (secret squirrel stuff) so you can pass through the second boom gate into the club rigging grounds. I will post some detailed site maps shortly.

Hi BC

The seabreeze forecast for Saturday afternoon is promising 14 Knots SE with a high tide of 2.19M at 14:00

Hopefully the question of wind limits won't arise.

Not withstanding, the RQYS Around Green Island Marathon doesn't have the option of a raincheck. 17 December 2011 is it.

It would be wise for sailors to bring their biggest slalom sails and fins.

Wind limits should have little effect on Richiefish and ScottF in the bar.

Bar wind limits will be in place on the day. A maximum of one per five minutes.

Get the 295 out Simon, looks near perfect for it. I may just take the eleven and take whatever comes (hopefully not a broken mast...)

And stay away rain!

I got my numbers from a marine shop. I got 24 numbers (4 digits on each side of 3 sails) for $36.

Real men carve numbers into their sails with a knife made from the jaw bone of their first sperm whale kill.

But seriously, can we use roman numerals (damn it, AUS-30 is taken)?

Sail numbers allow us to keep an eye on you and account for everyone on the course from a safety point of view.

That said, it would be a shame not to have identified you, if you were to cross the finish line in first place!
