After talking to a mate this morning who is also over 55 is it ok that we registered in the over 40's category?, I guess technically we are over 40 so its ok, I just did't see any other category suitable.

Better still give us an over 50s so we don't have to deal with any of those hyper active young wipper snappers.
Now you'll have to excuse me cos I can't find my glasses which means I cant find my walking stick and am therefore struggling to get to the privvy in order to complete my post dinner movement.

I wanna see a birth certificte and if we cant get him that way we need to run a urine sample and full tox screen!! How much Coke of the cola variety do you have to skull on a daily basis before your blood caffiene levels are above ISA acceptable standards?? Got Him!!!!

Hey Sparx!

I'm up to a slab of coke a day, and talking a million miles an hour ,so fast in fact that no one can understand me, Im zipping around like a blow fly bumping into to things and walking around in circles. When i go for a sup i'm paddling so fast that that i paddle past the waves i am going for! I cant work out what is wrong with me? might have to put one less sugar in my cuppa!

Where is the surf comp likely to be held ?

Red thumb away boys, I believe you need to understand where the proposed routes will take you to make an informed decison on whether you want to do the race or not.

If ISA is now specifying 12'6 boards for technical and also marathon does that also mean the marathon run will be on 12'6 now to fall in line?

Just an update on the racing, this from the Surfing Victoria website:


Competitors please note: Surfing Australia have included in the Australian SUP Titles an Over 40's division in both the Marathon and Technical races. The Victorian SUP Titles is the qualifying event for the nationals. The events will be conducted as an open division however those competitors who are in the Over 40 age group will have the chance to qualify for the Australian SUP Titles. So that means, there isn't a Victoria State Title in Over 40s Racing per se, but there is the opportunity to qualify for nationals in that category.

Just a reminder that the Victorian SUP Titles presented by VB will be held this weekend, the 25th and 26th February in and around Torquay. If you wish to compete, you absolutely must pre-register before 5pm tomorrow night - that's Tuesday 21st February.

The plan is for both surfing and racing state titles to be awarded this weekend. As a condition of entry, you must be a member of Surfing Victoria.

In surfing, the categories are Open Women's, Open Men's and Over 40s. A state title will be awarded in each category. Multiple division entry is permitted, though obviously you cannot enter both Women's and Men's.

In racing, there will be two races held, one on each day. There will be a 20km Marathon race for boards 14' and under, and a Technical or Surf Slalom style race (aka BOP race) of between 4 and 8km for boards 12'6" and under.

Categories in each race are Open Men's and Open Women's, and state titles will be awarded for both divisions. However, as with surfing, these races are the qualifying events for the Surfing Australia National Titles in which there is also an Over 40s category at nationals. Therefore, competitors in the Victorian races who fall into the over 40 age bracket will have the chance to qualify for nationals in that category even though the Victorian races will be conducted as open age divisions only.

The racing events are being scheduled as a two-day window option in order to allow for the best and safest conditions for the Marathon race in particular.

The course for the Marathon will also be determined by wind conditions on the day, with a set finish point (Cosy Corner, Torquay) but with options to start from either the north east or south west.

At this stage, it looks very much like we will be running the north east option on Saturday morning, which means the Marathon will begin at Raff's Beach Ocean Grove. The course will hug the coastline, with a marker buoy or jet ski stationed at Black Rock near Breamlea, where paddlers will be expected to round the marker and do a left turn along the coast towards Torquay. The idea is to keep competitors a manageable distance from shore.

Start time for the Marathon race will be approximately 7am. We intend a water start. There will be a full race briefing at Raffs Beach before hand. It is expected that the Marathon will take between 2 and 3 hours to complete depending on tail winds.

The expected conditions on Saturday morning appear to be relatively mild and ideal for a 20km Marathon, however this is open ocean with potential breaking waves and unpredictable swell, so entrants should be prepared for anything. PFDs and legropes are mandatory equipment in the Marathon race.

As safety is the number one priority in all events, but particularly in the Marathon, there will be a number of water craft observing and rendering assistance as required. However Surfing Victoria also requires volunteers who choose not to race to come along as lookouts at strategic points along the beach. Their role will be to count the paddlers passing by and radio in to the next position. Please make it known if you would like to volunteer to help with this race.

There has been some concern over the early start time of this race, especially for those traveling from a good distance away. Unfortunately this is unavoidable for a number of reasons, not least because the surf event cannot begin until after the race is complete. Several competitors have registered for both racing and surfing, so it is essential that the schedule caters for them. Furthermore, officials and volunteers and safety marshals are doubling up on both racing and surfing, and they will be required to relocate at the conclusion of racing to run the surfing event. And of course, the local conditions provide a limited window for both safe racing and ideal surfing. I'm sure we'd all prefer to make it home in one piece, even if it means giving up a little sleep.

The Technical Race will most likely be held on Sunday at Cosy Corner, with start time to be advised. 7am has been discussed, but not confirmed as surfing schedules and conditions have to be taken into account. The Technical Race will be a beach start. The full race briefing will be held on the beach before hand. The intention is to run an M shaped course over a number of laps through the surf zone. It would be best to avoid the traditional run leg between laps due to a lack of board handlers, so competitors would paddle into knee deep water and run around flags in the water in control of their own board. PFDs are not mandatory for the Technical Race, however competitors should bring along a legrope. It is expected that this race will take less than an hour to complete.

I have no new information to offer on the Surfing competition at this stage - start times and locations are to be advised.
