If you are not a local, how do you tell if someone is a local? To assume everyone is a local is giving the locals an advantage by default.
I find this funny, it's not meant to upset anyone although it probably will; Usually the locals are the ones behaving badly as they feel they have the numbers to back them up. How often do 1 or 2 people attack the locals?

IMO respect is not freely given but is earnt, if locals want respect they should show some and if visitors want respect they should also show some. Dropping in, snaking, wave hogging ect will not earn respect no matter if your a local or a visitor!
Unfortunately this is not how it happens in the real world at popular surf spots but it would be nice if it did.
I don't think anyone would turn up at a pub they don't normally drink at and take a bar stool from one of the locals would they? But I haven't been to a pub that a local would say pi$$ of mate you can't drink here and steel your bar stool either.
Just my thoughts
