If I had a dollar for every time someone has paddled into the way at the Alley I would not be sitting here on Seabreeze, I'd be on my yacht in the Maldives. Hahah.

Sometimes it's just not that easy to get around people and make the wave. If it's a fast section or a down the line wave you can blow a wave as the line you need to take has someone paddling in it. The responsibility is with the paddler. The hard part about inexperienced SUP riders is that they are always paddling perpendicular to the rider scrambling for the shoulder meaning a 10 foot long thing to get around.

The general rule is paddle wide or if you can't make it take the inside line to not affect the riders wave.

Some people might get all righteous about rules in the lineup but if you think clearly you will see they are closely related to common courtesy.

good to see some humor injected into this thread Unfortunately, this sort of thing is not going to go away especially if we dismiss it. The point was brought up about retailers giving a code of basic surf rules with boards. This was not to lay blame on them or make the responsable for others actions. But to me, they can either be Pro active or Re active. That is to say, get involved early on to help the sport in the right direction with every one on the same page, or wait for it to get worse (which it will) and get ready for restrictions etc to be imposed and forced warnings and liabilites as they are retailers of a product and when bad things happen, rules get changed and limitations enforced....look at how many things come with a warning sticker these days. look at litigation. Retails helping with education is especially important on the GC where all SUP SURF lessons are illegal.

If everyone is aware of the basic rules, then they cant use excuses. Yes we all find ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time in the surf by bad luck. But most of those doing the right thing will appologise to the surfer without being promted and that is pretty much always taken well.... or at least defuse the potential situation.

The Alley is used as a prime example and as has been said here by more than one poster "this sort of thing happens all the time" well right there is proof that it isnt always first timers getting in the wrong situation.....alot is a case of they know better and being told nicely wont do jack ****....SB and LB figured this out long ago.

Im not saying punch on at all, but the concept of a pat on the back and baby them with the rules does nothing when they wont even admit their mistake...and there is clear indication of that by some of the response in this thread.

I think I'll stick to the comparative peace of my "flat water" playground

(although even in the huge expanse of PPB we still find ways to run into each other ...SUPS are like magnets)

This might be just enough:

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

And then there's Winston Churchill.

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning".
