It's just a matter of getting used to the Minion I think. I frequently surf my 7'4" x 27 1/2"Minion at Big Left where, as you noted above, there is a lot of water movement - even on offshore days. I find it as stable as my 8'6" JP and I reckon that I catch as many waves as I used to on the bigger board. I think that if you keep your paddle technique and don't try to 'over-paddle' or force it, the Minion paddles pretty well.

Swap or sale - Deep Minion 7'6 x 27 1/4 x 4 1/8 @ 104L. I need to go up volume to around 115L (my knees are playing up) so selling this great board. Super fast and maouvarable on wave. Ideally would love to swap with someone who wants to downsize their Minion. I'm in SA but would swap interstate. Check buy & sell for details.

Hey Zman. Weighed it just for you. 9kg on the dodgy bathroom scales. Still loving the board, and taking it out in crappier conditions than i thought possible. Here's a pic of my poor minion resting at the bar after a hard session.

9 kg sounds a bit heavy though? Is it possible your scales are a bit off or is yours the heavier construction?

No worries Zman. I got the super tough vac bagged construction, so i can just enjoy myself without worrying about the board. I haven't been kind to my minion at all. There's nothing to scratch and i reckon i'll break a paddle before i crack a rail. At 6'3" & 100kg, board weight was the least of my concerns. Stoked with the stability, speed and turn of this board. I'm sure if i went for a smaller size i could surf it harder, but stability would suffer. There is no way i would enjoy a traditional 8 footer as much. I like swimming but not as much as surfing!

Are these all vacuume bagged boards , I see a few that are not or was this just the first lot to come out.

Vac bag is better in every way, but more expensive.

I paid $1850.00 for a vac bagged minion off Simon. I picked it up from him direct

I think my 7'2 vac bagged minion was around $1950 that's just from memory but seem to remember it was about $300 more than the standard one they do, I've ridden both and can't notice the extra weight in the vac bagged when on the wave. As for durability i've smacked mine with the paddle handle more than once, not a ding in site!

Dropin..my advice is go the 7'8 mate if your skill set is int-advanced you will be fine on the shorter option..I'm 94kg and been riding mine for a year now..my go to board in all conditions ..chop ,wind ,big ,small..IMO there wouldn't a lot of point in have both..hope that helps

I droped from a 10'6 to the 7'10 (I am 90kg) and F%"K me it has been hard, but I am getting used to it still, u can relax on a good day, I wold hate to go any smaller if anything I wish there was a stock 8'4, still my 7'10 is gr8 to ride.

Dropin I was running a 9'6 fun board and a 8'11 when I dropped to a 7'10 minion at 100kg. If I was 10 kg less it would have been a 7'8 for sure.
I've ridden the 7'8 with no issues but for me it was a touch more comfort for my size I wanted in choppier conditions as more of an all-round board.
If I was 85kg I'd be going for a 7'6 around 105lt.

Speak with Simon, he can do a 7'10 at 117lt (what I got) or a 7'8 at 115lt (The Good Dr's)
I'm sure there are a few other options he can throw at your to suit your requirements.

Yes - if you are intermediate - advanced. I am 90 kg and have a 7'10" and I am still not completely comfortable in choppy conditions (haven't had any good conditions when I have been home lately). If you have good balance and control - go the 7'8". Where do you live - can you try one?

Go the 7'8.

I am 93kgs, advanced rider and find them stable as because of the wide tail and nose.

Remember you gain more stability because of their shape.

You won't regret going shorter IMO
