Yes Bill did use the aircraft tyres, until both he and I went to Ireland and got thrashed in most cases by the wheelbarrow tyres. Bill did get some good results, but I think you will find that after that he rarely used them except on bone dry surfaces?

I think I may be able to step in here with, not expertise but at least I have a couple of tires to compare. As I said earlier the Air Trac design would compete with the Barrow wheels in some cases. That is going on what has been recently said. It is relatively light and the same dia' as the 400's, it is wider though. Goodyear, Dunlop and many others are too heavy and hard to use successfully . Their most endearing attribute is that they are for Freeeeeeeeee
Now as for Barrow Wheels, what are the pros and cons for the cheap plastic-y tires that come with the Cheap Chinese Wheels??

What is it with this sport???
I decided to have a go at it after years of contemplation------------on and off
and am looking to have the best performance already and I don't even want to be competitive, it probably is just wanting to go as fast as the wind will carry me

Wheels has anyone done a comparison of Rim (Complete) Weights, Poly against Alloy and Pressed Steel etc? Generally we grab the nearest wheel that fits the bill . Strong, Cheap and good looks, the later is only a self gratification thingy. If the ugliest wheel possible turned up and out performed everything else I for one would be first on the Band Wagon.
It just seems to me that 9kg is a lot of weight to spin up----- Ok! then 8.7kg. I mean like 0.00kg would be best but we all know that ain't happening, now.....is it??? "Back to the Future" "Hoverboards" would be useless in this situation as well

Aside from the POM's Green bird and it's well earned record speed. What is the fastest recorded speed anyone has done in this country with a bog ordinary fun machine and the strongest winds sailed?? Some Stat's would be nice.


Looking at that pic of the wheels it seems to me that the only way to go is more than likely the Fallshaws as when you start looking at the others it all starts to become a bit Grey. Sure we (Aussies) may well make a great Wheel but then you start to get into it you find that they start being copied and made cheaper and cheaper over seas for cheapness sake. Brands start to become blurred, construction and materials dubious and then confusion sets in, which do I buy?? Which is safest etc..
I have never seen a LY come unglued at speed or otherwise, many of you probably have. I get the impression that it could all become very Hollywood with forks digging in and Carts doing Summer-salts etc
It probably isn't that dramatic but I keep being told of Cuts, Bruises and yards of Skin being stripped from Limp Bodies Well that is probably over Dramatizing it, otherwise known as Gilding the Lilly.

thanks hiko. is that rim alone or rim and tire? stopped at a friends and weighed mine after i got new tires and didn't pay real close attention to scale, think mine were in ounces. 42 oz for rim,(1.2 kg?), 40 oz for tire (1.1 kg), 12 oz for tube (.35kg). new tires were double in weight (81 oz.) interested to feel difference. looks like i'm in ballpark tho.

All up weight, rim, tube, bearings, spacer, 2 ply tyre 2.8 KG

I just did a comparison weight test Air Trac' against Chinese import. Scale Balance weight comparison and it worked out "Near as Damn it is to Swearin" "Even Stevens" with a little bias in favor of the Air Trac but then a rim and tube have to be added to that. So as is becoming painfully obvious that Cheap Shoddy Plastics are a clear winner

ron if you intend to use those A?C tyres , the next thing you will have to do is go shopping for some 6"x6" alloy go cart rims. Maybe AUS 230 could post a photo of the ones he has left over from his old "viking"
they are tres light
The bearing that fit them will mean you will only have a 15mm axle which can be made by slightly machining a 16mm or5/8 HT bolt
once you get your rims and fit a tyre we can discuss how to go about planing off about 30-40% of the weight off the sidewalls and tread, then regrooving the tread.
youve got a really tough tyre that you can really go to town on.
i do believe this post may have meant that alot of the previous worry posts re the weight might now be redundant

Those tires and wheels clemco look good.
Now I could be wrong but have a look at those Air Tarc's. They are a nice soft tire and could stand a little tread trimmed to lighten them? What say you then Possibly with a thinner tread area and high pressure they will take on a rounded Motor Bike type shape giving a little less rolling resistance

I called in @ the Davenport Airport this morning and picked up a couple of tires. Now I have a pair of Air Tracs, Goodyears and Condoors, the later 2 pair are going to need a lot of cutting to lighten them.

Mounted in the Stern of the ship is an Abalour Scotch (Single Malt) Bottle in which my ashes are going. To save me the embarrassment of Hanging about on my sons Mantel Piece over the Fire Place Gathering dust I am to be set out to Sea when a steady Southerly is blowing. If he chooses, the Rod Stewart song "Sailing" playing. A funny thing about the whole business he reckons he is going to hold back some of the ashes to incorporate in his Art.
Ok So now is your curiosity satiated?? Hmmmm

When they launched a new ship they slid it into the water over the bodies of a few of their neighbours
