Sounds like crap to me, but god 'elp us if kiting society starts going down the path of vigilante-ism and witch hunts.

Even if it was true, the alleged theif could lay assault charges. Such a public display of violence will only reinforce the public perception (rightly or wrongly) that kitesurfers are a mob of thugs that go around assaulting people.

For what its worth, I had a whole lot of gear stolen from my locked car last year - 2 laptops, mobile, GPS, PDA, camera while coming back fom weekend away - but my kite/board was not taken(!). Police found a fingerprint and the dude pleaded guilty earning himself 6 months in the slammer no-parole. I'm happy and put the loss down to bad luck, bad timing and some foolishness on my part. But blaming others doesnt solve these problems.

Actually its not the cops .They actually do give a damm and like nothing more than to put assholes away,
its their political masters who have quotas to fill re traffic infringement revenue and courts that make it totally impossible to nail crims ,which is magnified but not enough cops por rostering and a mountain of parework to get through.
An ex cop was telling me about this little mongrel that they had endless problems with and got the usual slap over the wrist by the courts .on this visit to the court they had him in there for a number of charges including indecent language (he told the f'n c%#t pigs to f off off and leave him alone and that he done nuffin wrong).the well known magistrate said that surely in this day and age the f and c word is used in common language (eg tripple J ,gordon ramsay etc) and dismissed the charge .
She asked the clerk to call the next case ,the clerk went out but didn't come back for a while ,she asked the police prosecutor to see what was going on he said 'well maybe he's f%#ked off for some lunch or somefin your honour" ,which brought the court down...

I am glad you could afford to put your loss down to bad luck, but when I had my car stolen with everything in it, I got basically told it was tough ****e by the so called Police.

I good few years ago I came home only to find an intruder in my flat with MY sports bags in both hands filled with MY stuff. The toe rag even had MY ski jacket on and it wasn`t even cold. Well,,,, lets say I was pretty pissed off. Luckily the cops (this was back in the U.K.) were quite good about it, suggesting, no sorry asking me if the guy "fell over" badly when he tried to run away. What really pissed me off was that because of that toe rag my spare time was taken up having to go to court, only for him to to get let out on probation. His lawyer said he had learned from his mistakes.
I`ve had my car broken into a few times. Every time the police said it was unlikely the idiots will be caught, probably kids. Once the cops even suggested I shouldn`t have parked there. It was a bloody car park! Where should I have parked, on a tree?
Groper I understand what you getting at. But when these things happen to you (and it has) and you hear how much it happens to others you can`t help think that old fashion revenge sometimes is needed.
Why can`t they work for their stuff like the rest of us?
