Almost like a religion where someone wrote stuff down in a book a long time ago and people use it to justify their actions. Indoctrination?

Confronting Willful Ignorance: Cognitive Biases, Social Media Echo Chambers, and the 'Conspiracy Theory' Phenomenon
Douglas C . Youvan doug@youvan.com April 14, 2024

In our rapidly evolving information landscape, the phenomenon of willful ignorance presents a unique challenge to societal progress and democratic engagement. "Confronting Willful Ignorance: Cognitive Biases, Social Media Echo Chambers, and the 'Conspiracy Theory' Phenomenon" delves into the psychological and social dynamics that encourage individuals and groups to ignore or dismiss crucial information. This paper explores the roles of cognitive biases like confirmation bias and the Dunning-Kruger effect, how digital echo chambers on social media platforms amplify misinformation, and the impact of the often misused label of 'conspiracy theory' in stifling legitimate debate. Through a comprehensive analysis, it seeks to provide insights into the mechanisms that underpin willful ignorance and offers strategies to combat misinformation, enhance public discourse, and promote a well-informed society. Our discussion aims not only to understand these phenomena but also to suggest practical interventions for educators, policymakers, and media outlets.

You mean like those manipulated/edited videos you keep posting?

You know, the one's where, when the original video/transcript is presented to you, you just disappear like a Whack-a-Mole.

Only to reappear minutes later with a different, but equally idiotic pronouncement (followed by a cry to the mods). Sad.

Do you have to be mad to believe in conspiracy theories? Personality disorders and conspiracy theories
Adrian Furnham
doi.org/10.1177/00207640211031614

"This study explored the relationship between belief in conspiracy theories and the personality disorders. A sample of 475 British adults, aged around 30?years, completed measures of Belief in Conspiracy Theories (CTs) and the Personality Disorders (PDs), as well as the SAPAS, a short intelligence test and two self-evaluations. Belief in CTs was correlated with nearly all PDs, as well as the three established higher order clusters (A: odd and eccentric; B: dramatic and emotional; C: anxious). A series of stepwise multiple regressions were computed. A final regression showed five of the variables (education, intelligence, Cluster A, B, and C) were significant, which indicated that less well-educated and less intelligent participants, scoring higher on two PD clusters (Cluster A and B) but lower on Cluster C, believed more in the CTs. Implications of the study for understanding the origin of CTs is discussed. Limitations of the study, particularly the sample and measures used, are acknowledged.
...
Douglas et al. (2019) concluded '. . .conspiracy theories have effects on both individuals and important societal institutions. Their risks (and benefits) are far-reaching, and much more research needs to be conducted to fully understand the importance of this pervasive psychological, political, and social phenomenon, especially on the vulnerable and disadvantaged groups that have been identified as most expected to benefit from them'.

Cognitive styles and religion
Onurcan Yilmaz
doi.org/10.1016/j.copsyc.2020.09.014

Highlights
? Intuitive cognitive biases (e.g. anthropomorphism) give rise to supernatural beliefs.
? Those who hold supernatural beliefs tend to score lower on intelligence and reasoning tests.
? Believers are less open-minded and more likely to believe in fake news and conspiracy theories.
? Those who see religion as a search for truth tend to score higher on reasoning tests.

Conspiracy theorizing has long been favored by Populists, who are almost invariably anti-elitist, and therefore generally anti-intellectual as well. Because conspiracy theorists almost always wish to see conspiracies exposed, they are typically quite dedicated in their search for evidence relevant to their favourite conspiracy theory and are usually able to overwhelm philosophers with a deluge of evidence in favour of that theory.

I was a bit surprised yesterday. Someone who is normally relatively quiet tried to steer every conversation to Trump versus Biden debates about American politics. Luckily no one else in this social group cares about American politics and ignored him. I was surprised about how vocal he was.

We live in Australia right? Do we really care who the President is in the USA?

Why is it that these guys gravitate towards US politics? Is it because they get wrapped up in the same type of people and these people are based in the US and send content and memes all about US politics? I am surprised about the memes we get here in funny images thread. I would have to understand US politics to even begin to understand them, let alone think they are 'funny'.

You're right of course. American politics should only be of any concern to countries that host a US military base. Can't think why anyone should be watching it here in Australia.

Yeah, you are probably right. I will keep it in mind next time I vote in US elections.

Oh, that's right. We have no way of influencing American politics because clearly we can't vote in their elections. I guess it must be because of all the memes then.

I wonder if Americans sit there pondering Australian political landscapes, because they are allies and have a base here and all that.

Explosive Hearing: Philippines' House of Representatives Investigates 290K+ Excess Deaths Correlated with Experimental Vaccines (aussie17.com)

An explosive hearing unfolded at the Philippines' House of Representatives, focusing on the concerning increase of over 290,000 excess deaths. As people start to connect the dots to the roll-out of experimental vaccines, heated discussions ensued, revealing shocking testimonies and data.

No evidence that excess deaths in 2021 linked to COVID vaccination: Duque, health expert
...
"There is no evidence, your honors, that the increase in deaths in the Philippines was somehow linked to the vaccination program. Closer examination of those deaths clearly shows that most of them were from chronic illnesses, while a few were from undetected COVID-19," the former health secretary said.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Edsel Salvana also believes that COVID vaccination has nothing to do with the excess deaths in 2021, noting that the increase in mortality started "prior" to the COVID immunization program, and that deaths fell after the vaccine reached most of the population as seen during the entry of the Omicron variant."

FN who ever you are, I still love you, even though you're anonymous. I imagine a fine fellow with a gentle smile wishing me well sitting behind his keyboard in his undies somewhere in a leafy suburb of Australia. He'll respect my decision to not get Covid vaxxed just as much as I respect his decision to get the 6 boosters.

We'll meet at the beach, helping each other rig sails and carry boards, laughing at our Seabreeze discussions. We'll reminisce about the 1000 times I was called a conspiracy theorist because I did something different to him. We'll hug and high five each other, realising that we have lots in common, we both like red frogs, I buy a box and eat 20 of them however unfortunately I die of an adverse reaction to red food colouring. You'll weep for 2 minutes but then forget the death and return to the forum and rip into PC about some dodgy link he's dug up from some weird site.

But I'll still love you FN, while I'm floating above my body looking down, because we need those challenging people in our lives to help us grow. I'm forever grateful, I've learnt to not get affected, that's the true lesson in life isn't it, to let go.... and with that, I thank you FN.... you were one of my best teachers.

Are you still worried about people being 'anonymous' on here? I have no idea who you are either, and I don't care. You could tell me your name, but it would still mean nothing to me. It shouldn't.

I have met enough people in real life that know my forum username that I sometimes feel embarassed about being vocal on here. I hope that they realise it doesn't matter. It's just chatter, and I would rather have an interesting discussion from the opposite side than sit there and agree on everything.

I don't hug, so you might have to set your expectations a bit lower.

I have actually met PCd in real life. I was curious to see if he was the same in real life as he is here, but I didn't really chat, but I expect he would be.

I can see the reference to me as being one of your best teachers as a backhand, but it's okay, I can learn too

And as I mentioned previously. It was eleven years after it was taken off the market that it was first mentioned in the UK parliament.
