^I'd say the people who drowned in a rip can probably be grouped with the people at risk of shark attack.
Should we cull great whites for the small fraction of the population that surf and dive? Is that not selfish??
If I was walking through long grass and a snake bit and killed me, should we cull snakes to reduce that risk? Where do we draw the line? What price should this world pay so the ever growing population can feel bulletproof? I can promise you we all will die, numbers wise 100%.
At the cost of another life and its ripple effect, you are buying a very small percentage of human life.

We do what is considered by normal peole to be appropriate.
If the snake is in the middle of a built up area or around your house, you get rid of it by whatever means you think are appropriate, in spite of what the 20 year old newly graduated enviromental scientist says. Thye seem to have a totally skewed view of what is endangered and what is not.
If it is out in the bush somewhere you just walk around it,.. maybe take a few pics if you like.
Likewise, no one is asking for sharks to be removed if they are out in the deeps bothering nobody.
But when they come in and start supplementing their daily intake of vitamins and minerals by snacking on surfers who have safely surfed popular spots for the last 50 years, then something needs to be done.
I think you put too much weight on the worth of a fish compared to the worth of a person.

So how many should we kill?
Btw GWS have been around alot longer than 50years ![]()
We kill however many come in and eat people, the same as we remove however many snakes decide to come in and take over your residence.
They actualy stop quite fast.
And yes, GW sharks have been around for thousands of year, but when I started surfing in the early sixties and until recently, you could safely surf at any of the places which have now become 'extreme sport' arenas.
Something has changed for the worse and I think we should to something to re-estabilsh the status quo.

Ok, the attack happens, same as the weekend. Whats the response time from the attack to the kill/cull. And how do you its the same shark?
The only shark that they ever had a positive ID on is the one that got Ken Crew. They followed it for ages but didnt kill it.

Nobody is forcing you out past the breakers, you moved into their house. Stick your hand down the snake hole and see what happens.
How the hell did it become popular to think that a fish eating a person is acceptable? Did I miss a brainwashing episode on tv or something??

Big fish ![]()
Yep, big fish. Really big, but still fish. Some people seem to think they're as special as double horned unicorns.
No one gets too upset when I catch a herring or a squid. People don't cry about snapper being caught. But heaven forbid a shark dies!

The great white shark is listed on the IUCN red list of threatened species. The herring is not.

Time for it to be taken off the list then, as we've all seen, there's plenty around nowadays.

Show me the science used that justifies them being on the list, otherwise keep your insults to yourself.
You've got absolutely no idea.

Not really, i think you will find the great white is the apex predator, so therefor the most important factor in a eco system. Thats the point that a few are trying to make. I know you guys have trouble with comparisons but it would be like me arguing saying cut down all the trees in the world because they are dangerous. Shore that will remove the risk of falling to of one, but it will also affect every other person living on the planet![]()
Another point that maybe is missed when people look at Shark numbers. Great White sharks are coastal dwellers so you can't say they are everywhere and because the Oceans are huge they must be millions of them..
But the funny part is if you kill 100, you still won't be safe..You simply won't be safe in the Ocean.
$20 million dollars, you could build a wave pool or two![]()

Maybe someone with real numbers should tell us, you and I don't know shxt regarding numbers, why are these facts so hidden???

There not that hidden. Ive said it many times. worst estimate is 3500 best estimate is 10000..
They are not my figures. Just what you will read anywhere you look, unless you look at Underoaths made up graph![]()
Fark you speak some drivel JB....
You got that right.
He quotes figures with no understanding of where they came from, yet bags out and dismisses an honest and transparent attemp at a real estimation of numbers.
Makes you wonder what his motivation really is.
Jb seems to be trying to sell boats by gaining publicity through this forum, remember, any publicity is good publicity.
Or he's in favour of sharks as it keeps people out of the water, so the only way watet lovers will return to the water is in a boat...
Why can't certain people understand the fact that we live our lives with an element of risk. I would rather die doing something I loved than by a painful battle with cancer or killed by a driver who was too busy texting to see the red light.
Unless you fall out of your boat while you're fishing or sailing, you're not really white pointer bait though are you SirJman? You play ON the water, not in it. Element of risk - not so high.
