As I thought would be the case, my cut is really badly infected from the tropical water. Tough decision up there to know whether to compete or not because of this, but I'm glad I did. Just have to go through the weeks & weeks of dressing changes & antiotics, fun fun fun.

That's a bugger Kazza. Tropical water and cuts don't mix well.
Ever since I nearly lost my leg from a tiny scratch, I carry a tube of anti-bacterial cream when somewhere tropical. You can get it over the counter in PNG but need a prescription for it here!

Plod plod plod, slowly but surely. Lesson no 1 keep cuts dry & dressed in the tropics. Someone was telling me yesterday that his mate got tetnus from a rose thorn. Everyone take care of all cuts!!

Check out the body language in the team Tassie photo, Dave & Kaleb standing there with their arms crossed.....whose the winner

I told you to rubb Paw Paw into it each day before going in the water. Did you clean it with fresh water each night and apply any of the following; betadine, tea tree oil, lemons or limes, or use an antiseptic powder??

If not sucked in, you deserve the infection. If you did, bad luck you did all you could.

Rose thorn prick is one of the main ways to get tetnus from the bacteria that they carry, also getting soil and manure in a cut..

I never know when your full of it or when your actually right Cut was cleaned each night with Sterile cleaner, just didn't know I was supposed to keep it dressed at night as well, and the dressing lasted 5 secs while windsurfing so gave up on that. I thought drying it out would do it good, apparently thats the wrong thing to do.
I must say the doctor surgery I went to in Cairns was all a bit lax, they didn't actually tell me how to look after it, just said try not to get it wet and good luck with the windsurfing. Oh and I'd better give you some antibiotics because it may get infected if you go in the water. Then the doctors surgery down here was full on, checked everything from DVT (because I have varicose veins in that leg), very high dose of antibotics, dressed every 2nd day.
That's really my only criticism of the event up there, they needed a bit more than surf lifesavers who couldn't find anything in their medical box because it was so old and not restocked regularly, that's a bit slack for a an Island that has a huge amount of tourists each day.

Hardcore Kazza, thats for sure, hope you are healed soon enough, surely the southern water will fix everything?
Been great to read the updates, and see all the photo's coming out of the event.
Well done to you guys for making the journey, and showing everyone what we already know... that you guys are awesome on the water.
We're a lucky state to have such a close group too.

Bad news Kazza, guess you didnt use the Tea Tree Antispetic?... I'm not surprised it went bad , was such a nasty gash..there is thread on here somewhere from me 18months ago,, a tiny gash in my leg no where near as bad as yours went bad..48hrs after the cut I was getting oxygen passed out on the doctors floor! and getting needles stuck in me everywhere.. Massive blood posioning etc, took weeks to get back to normal health..late night sweats, no energy, weak etc etc.. the Bacteria then ate my calf muscle..yummo....took 12 months to get the leg back to almost the same size...

Dont muck around with salt water cuts is the motto..they told me 'impact cuts' like yours are the worst (mine was also impact) because the deep bruising from the collision is just heaven for nasty bugs, they love it, helps them get deeper into your blood stream...

As well as tea tree there is a magic red chinese goo that some surfers swear by also.. you need to keep it 'still' for days to help speed the recovery..the more you move the more the bad bacteria thrives and spreads..I was on the couch for a weeks..

Good luck with it...you should recover in time for next years GI!!!

Ouch Kazza sounds like it was a very nasty injury hope it heals up soon. Were there any other girls at GI who even had a sail while you were there? Both times I went there was no other local girls around

Hi Kellie, yes 1 other American girl was just sailing around on the Wednesday and she went in the Freerace 1 hr on the Friday. There were also a few wives of competitors that can sail but didn't want to go in the comp. They're talking about it for next year though, so next year is looking good for the female side of things.

Kazza I spent 6 weeks on the couch with intravenous injections every 4 hrs after slightly grazing my leg on the formula board while sailing the blockbuster weekend at Port Dalrymple 6 years ago so not just confined to tropical water. I had cellulitus and had to keep my leg higher than my heart until fixed. Most boring recovery ever you can't do much with your leg stuck up. The doc said I had three choices the first one as described above, second one go to hospital for a few weeks or third one amputate. So look after yourself and get well soon. Well done again on beating all those blokes up there.
