just got back from burrum. what a great time i had. congrats to everyone that was involved and hope to see you all again next year. it's such an impressive place. 34 competitors on the water blasting down the bank was an impressive site.

cheers also to the sponsors and all of the locals and local businesses that got behind the event. i'll have a full wrap up posted in the next few days once i sort the data and photos out. hopefully the local media will start to show some of the outcomes also. both channel 7 and 9 said they would most likely have their coverage on tonights news. there were a few interviews done and a lot of time spent out on the course shooting footage. i'll try and get copies for viewing.

Hi also to the 3 hervey bay guys,

hopefully next year you guys can once again do the drive from hervey bay up to burrum heads to join in officially.

i wanted to say that i was a little dissapointed to see the posts made on this forum. i felt everything was fully dealt with on the day.

just to clear things up further. i had numerous complaints from competitors regards your sailing on saturday. the issue was that sailing back to the top of the course within 3-4m of those coming down the course was making competitors and organisers very concerned. (as i politely pointed out when i called you in off the course.) i'd also like to point out that at no point did i ask the 3 of you to leave the area, but i did ask that you abide by the same conditions as everyone else.

the particular situation of getting back to the top of the course was dealt with in detail at the briefing along with the expected weather conditions, the extent of the course and what to do if in trouble on the course along with other items.

for the record, i also reminded "competitors" during the event about how to get back to the top of the course and how to leave enough room for those coming down the course.

Again, I reiterated these rules at the briefing on day 2 as these rules are there to protect all sailors.

further more, we also had 2 rescue craft on course, 2-3 spotters with binoculars, contact with MSQ and sign on and sign off procedures, plus we did a full sweep of the course at days end.

unfortunately your posts make it sound as if the event was dissorganised and full of arrogant people. that is so far from the truth.

the event was also a great social event. everyone i spoke with had a great time and made new friends. myself included!

as you guys came to the area in the full knowledge that we were holding a speed competition and sailed within the area that MSQ had given approval to and alongside legitimate competitors, i hope next time you join in the fun officially or at least approach an official to see what the deal is.

coming on seabreeze and complaining isn't really constructive, it only has the potential to hurt the event and spoil it for everyone. i ask that you remember i have never organised a single event to sets out to exclude people. in fact i strive to achieve exactly the opposite.

i also ask if we can just leave it all at that and i really hope you guys do come along next year and join the event. there's plenty for all.

I just wanted to make a few things a bit more clear before I leave this forum for good.
My first comment about burrum I said it was disappointing about some visiting sailor’s attitude, (not all). I then said until some actually spoke to us without abuse. This person was obviously you.
The foul language did happen from two of your companions and when I spoke to you on the sandbank you explained the problem of the run back north along the bank. I told you ok but we aren’t going cop this abuse from these other blokes.
I don’t understand the dangerous sailing complaints but I can assure you we were making an effort to give you extra room. If you people think that fair enough everyone entitled to there own opinion. I know you didn’t ask us to leave but I certainly didn’t want to stay around. In my experience it’s a bad idea to have someone close to other people after they had been told to f off by that person.
We don’t know you and I am sure are your all good people but these two blokes with the foul mouths just made things go wrong.
I certainly am not interested in arguing with people on an internet forum , we may see each other again some time I hope things go a bit better then.

As I said on the GTC web site, a huge thanks to Gail and Ray for looking after Kelly and I. Also to everyone involved in the comp from organisers, helpers, sponsors, townspeople and all the competitors, what a great event Kelly and I caught up with lots of bloody nice people, put faces to names, had a couple of great sails and most importantly had heaps of laughs, I'll be back

cheers to all for the thanks. i really enjoy organising the event. will be back again next year that's for sure.

a little bit of house keeping.

Refunds - during the signon we reduced the windwanderers component for those that needed to access the AWA insurance, so a couple of people paid $40 for the insurance. please send me an email and i will refund the other $20 asap.

also there are about 3 people that require $10 change, i will forward a cheque asap.

making next years event even better -

for next year everything will remain the same, barge, smiles, parties etc.

but with a couple of small additions we will try to achieve.

- we will look towards adding additional classes for, masters (>60) 5x10, youths (<21) 5x10 sec and women's NM division.

- competitor packs will be arranged including a PWA style flouro wetshirt for keeping which will also help identify competitiors on the course.

- cash prize for first places for both open and womens classes (5x10 sec)

- additional flags on the bank to highlight either port tack or starboard tack course direction.

- renting of the house beside the burrum sands to allow permanent rigging and storage area for competitors gear and to increase the size of "Speed HQ".

also a heads up to all of the wide bay residents, tomoorows edition of the fraser coast chronicle will run some coverage of the event in the sports section.

plus i have asked 9 win for a copy of the sports news they aired. they agreed to send something through so i will make it available once it arrives. will talk with channel 7 tomorrow hopefully.

Ray, is that a bottle of your famous Lemoncello I see on the table in the above pic? I think it would've been worth the drive just to sample that!

Maybe...
1) a 'min no. of competitors' in the classes also.... unfair to 'prize' someone if they are the only one in that class.
2)'Masters'...maybe a lower age so you don't get just 2 or 3 in that class. (see no. 1)
Just a thought!

yes, i should have been a bit clearer. i am still a little foggy from the lemoncello and i only had one shot.

actually yesterday i tried to order 6 brick samples only to realise i had been looking on the US boral site.

we would look to set a 3 person min for each class. i should also mention that open is open to all. so for example a 17 year old girl could potentially take out ladies, youth and open classes.

still not sure whether masters would start at 55 or 60. i think at 60 we would stil see a few competitors.

well it's all food for thought and aimed at improving the event. each year we review the outcome and implement some of the feedback from competitors. the wetshirts for eg was a great idea from choco.
