Kelly and I are heading off Wed morning with maybe a sail at Alva on the way ![]()
Typical slack FNQ'ers we're not registered so hoping to do it there ![]()
Looking forward to catching up with our southern cousins, hope it's not cold.
no worries firie,
can sign on on the day. unfortunately the website has some issues and won't be back online prior to the event.
i will be bringing loads of forms with me
look forward to meeting you there.
cheers.
Justin.
another update,
more good news on the sponsors front as MFC fins have come onboard with sponsorship for this year event.
A big thanks to MFC for their support.
also,
i have been in regular contact with the local guys and they tell me that the wind is still blowing. some competitors are already up at the strip enjoying the conditions. currently speeds have been hovering around 33-35 with a 37 approx being recorded today.
forecast for the weekend is for stronger winds again, so things are looking good. saturday will hopefully see 25 knots blowing down the bank.
cheers
Justin.
edit** website is back online. http://www.caloundrawindandsurf.com.au/Speedcomp.htm
Thanks for the offer mark, but i have managed to get lift up on the sat morning which suites my uni timetable a little bit better. Sorry i didn't get back to you sooner but will hopefully see you up there.
No worries, looking at the forecast I might be staying on for another day or so
- pity the tide is so late.
Yeah, the tide is a bit of a worry for next week, but maybe it means 2 sails, one early morn and one late eve ![]()
Hi upthere,
not sure? maybe 7.5,6.6,5.8. there is a barge to help everyone get gear and or themselves out to the runs. it also has bbq/toilet/coffee onboard.
for the event it will effectionatly be known as the "party boat" ![]()
glen and MK,
will be there till tuesday myslef so hoping to get in some bump and jump at high tide. i am told it is very good. launch straight of the beach and blast across to woodgate for some waves on the banks.
only taking the freestyle board with me. ![]()
will borrow slalom from pete for low tide blasting. ![]()
just about to hit the road,
will see everyone up there,
if anyone needs to make contact with me i will be at the burrum sands "speed HQ"
cheers
Justin.
Hi Justin, apologies for missing the briefing (crazy at work this week) and my emotion on the beach. Not every day I get told to F$%@ off. I'm one of the nice guys out there and had intentions of coming in to see if a late nom was possible (note: my PFD was on and I usually don't wear one). After our friend told me that I was not welcome I changed my mind. We have sailed totally harmoniously here for at least 12 years and I for one don't tolerate abuse well and returned fire (very out of character for me). I was not mistaken with regards to what our friend said to me, as he denied on the beach. I guess abuse and dishonesty are high on his list of attributes. Harmonious Trev.
it was very disappointing to see the attitude of some sailboarders visiting the burrum heads saturday. after 25 years windsurfing in the area this is the first time i have seen abuse to other sailboarders. we all knew about your speed comp and made an effort to keep out of your way ,but obviously this wasnt good enough.
not being involved with the gps speedsailing we were not aware of your "rules" .
(until someone actually spoke to us without abuse)
we all sail up here for fun and dont need this crap to ruin the day for everyone.
hope next time we see you everyone gets on a bit better.
Hervey bay guys- I did not see the incident. The other involved is also one of the nice guys and one of the few which gives selflessly to the sport and at the end of the day did not seem proud of the action and obviously hasn't seen fit to slander others or windwanderers on a public forum.
It was not some trivial matter, if someone fails to give way to another doing 30+knots there will not be loss of gear it potentially will result with death and all that goes with it- manslaughter charges, court, jail, civil action against the survivor, against windwanderers etc. So if you copped some abuse at the end of the day realise that both parties were mistaken but it could have been much worse.
Windsurfing is pretty good in that it doesn't exclude others from their course areas, regardless of whether you are involved or not it doesnt hurt to take up with the organisors and find out what is happening, try sailing in the same spot as a boat race and you will soon get chased off the course irregardless of if it is your home spot or not.
At the end of the day you guys have a great spot, you should be pleased to share it and share the experiences as the rest of us have in becoming mates with those from around aus. Trev i'm sure if you crashed that the person you are attacking would've been there to pick up the pieces and irregardless being involved in the comp or not the rescue boat would have picked you up had you broken something.
there are always 2 sides to a story and regardless of who is right or wrong there was never any intention from us hervey bay sailors to disrupt or cause any problems with your comp. (which is why we left after the problem started and sailed in another area )
A great weekend of sailing in a great spot!!!
Thanks to to Justin, Dylan, the sponsors, the barge guys, Jeff and the other sailors(competing and non competitors). A great job was done ensuring our safety whilst on the water and was greatly appreciated. I got a chance to speak to most sailors there and see them sail and learn from them!!!
Was great for me to see so many sailors on the water!!!
A big thanks go to the locals of Burrum heads aswell for the hospitality they gave us, top people in a top place!!!
I'm afraid if i did go as fast as Vando and the others, my sails would crumble ( nothing to do with them never being washed either )
I will be back next year but to compete in the GPS classes!!!
Thanks again
Jason CAREY (Goldcoast moz)![]()
Agree with Jason, great weekend very well organised. Thanks to all the sponsors and Justin for organsing all the great prices etc and a fantastic presentation BBQ for all the hungry sailors.
Must apologise to you Jason when you asked me on the sand bank where we had to sail on Saturday I said you can sail anywhere you like out there, I didn't realise you were in the radar class and didn't have a GPS, should have told you to go sail past the barge where the radar was.
So many PB's for heaps of the GPSTC teams including me![]()
just got back from burrum.
what a great time i had. congrats to everyone that was involved and hope to see you all again next year. it's such an impressive place. 34 competitors on the water blasting down the bank was an impressive site.
cheers also to the sponsors and all of the locals and local businesses that got behind the event. i'll have a full wrap up posted in the next few days once i sort the data and photos out. hopefully the local media will start to show some of the outcomes also. both channel 7 and 9 said they would most likely have their coverage on tonights news. there were a few interviews done and a lot of time spent out on the course shooting footage. i'll try and get copies for viewing.
Hi also to the 3 hervey bay guys,
hopefully next year you guys can once again do the drive from hervey bay up to burrum heads to join in officially.
i wanted to say that i was a little dissapointed to see the posts made on this forum. i felt everything was fully dealt with on the day.
just to clear things up further. i had numerous complaints from competitors regards your sailing on saturday. the issue was that sailing back to the top of the course within 3-4m of those coming down the course was making competitors and organisers very concerned. (as i politely pointed out when i called you in off the course.) i'd also like to point out that at no point did i ask the 3 of you to leave the area, but i did ask that you abide by the same conditions as everyone else.
the particular situation of getting back to the top of the course was dealt with in detail at the briefing along with the expected weather conditions, the extent of the course and what to do if in trouble on the course along with other items.
for the record, i also reminded "competitors" during the event about how to get back to the top of the course and how to leave enough room for those coming down the course.
Again, I reiterated these rules at the briefing on day 2 as these rules are there to protect all sailors.
further more, we also had 2 rescue craft on course, 2-3 spotters with binoculars, contact with MSQ and sign on and sign off procedures, plus we did a full sweep of the course at days end.
unfortunately your posts make it sound as if the event was dissorganised and full of arrogant people. that is so far from the truth.
the event was also a great social event. everyone i spoke with had a great time and made new friends. myself included!
as you guys came to the area in the full knowledge that we were holding a speed competition and sailed within the area that MSQ had given approval to and alongside legitimate competitors, i hope next time you join in the fun officially or at least approach an official to see what the deal is.
coming on seabreeze and complaining isn't really constructive, it only has the potential to hurt the event and spoil it for everyone. i ask that you remember i have never organised a single event to sets out to exclude people. in fact i strive to achieve exactly the opposite.
i also ask if we can just leave it all at that and i really hope you guys do come along next year and join the event. there's plenty for all.
cheers for putting up all of the results Dylan, much appreciated. i love the sorting table. ![]()
also a quick clarrification, the insurance is there to protect those not involved in the competition.
also. radar class saw jason (gold coast moz) record a 36 mph with chris in second place showing a 32 mph on the gun.
hey dylan,
i saw all of your efforts on monday,
9 years off the water and you do 2 water starts and several planing runs no worries.
kellie should lend you her gps. ![]()
Not sure who the reckless sailor was in the first half hour but I was late, as stated. Accidents happen however I'm not dangerous. Don't expect anyone to pick up pieces but Internation Laws of the High Sea state every person has the responsibility to assist someone in distress. Sailed for 39yrs and haven't been rescued or assisted yet, touch wood. Not wishing to continue the debate but we were not even near the speed course when we passed, we were in the rough water in the first bay. I've already appologised for my emotion and comments however it started with poor communication. Happy to move and we did. "TREV OUT" and not likely to be back......
