Ah, that would explain it.
The 50D is a great body, and was on our shopping list until they released the 7D.
We also had the 100-400L IS, but we sold it to finance our second last ski trip, as well as a 1D Mk III. That body was a bit of a disappointment actually. Very expensive and greatly hyped, but the focussing issues were never really resolved and she-who decided to flick it while it was still worth something. The 7D is actually a much better camera.
She has a couple of new lenses you would be VERY interested in.
Gimme a call sometime, and we'll catch up for a chat, and you can have a look.
She needs to come down and take some more windsurfing shots too.

that would be nice

that's the only older lens i have left. I had some sigma and tamrons that I managed to palm off over the last two years. i was actually going to get a nikon d300 & d700 a couple of years ago and start again from scratch, but after using one on a couple of occasions i changed my mind and kept the canon lenses / accessories so i just bought a 40d, and then replaced it with this 50d.

talking about faulty stuff, it's actually my second 50d as the first one died, and so did the shutter button on the 40d. I've got a 24-105 f4L which had a crooked element and went back to canon twice before they fixed it correctly, a faulty canon 50mm prime which got replaced, and a dramatically front focussing canon 100mm macro that also got replaced. Fortunately all this stuff happened within warranty and I've got at least 3 years extended warranties - hope it's worth the money because I'm yet to have to use it. For a while there I thought I was jinxed when it came to buying camera gear. I've got a 5d mk2 which has been good (touching plenty of wood).

I'm actually pretty disappointed with the noise in the 50d after all the initial hype. Looks like the 7d is pretty noisy too, though not quite as bad as the 50d for colour noise. The rest of it's goodies sound nice

Sounds like a bit of a bum run.
We've been pretty lucky. We've not had a lens failure or problem, and apart from total shutter mechanism failure on a 1D-Mk II body she bought, ( actually got sent back to Japan for analysis, as it had never happened before), all teh bodies have been fine really too. The focussing issues I refered too were intrinsic in teh design, and may not affect a lot of people, but halter horse photography is particularly demanding and difficult.
We still have an old 20D, which has been a complete trojan, and was all we had after the ID-Mk III went, as my wife was disillusioned with the whole horse photography scene that she had been focussed on, and it wasn't until the 7D came out that she wanted to buy another body.
Now she is back into it, she wants a full-frame sensor body as well, which will probably be a 5D Mk II. That might have to wait a bit after the recent lens purchases.
I'll be floating around the coast today, and we might go to the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper to see if we can get some cool shots too.
My mobile is 0405 386155.
I need to catch up with you to get some tips on windsurfing tricks etc too.
Time to learn some new ones, I think.
