Hey BARN. If you're such a good freestyler and don't like 'boring' forward loops or backies, why is your Avatar a pic of someone (you?) doing one of the boring moves and not a freestyle move. Im presuming that is you in the pic attempting one of these oh so boring moves...hows the blue green in that sh!thouse lake treating ya these days.

yea thats me in my aviator, just a lame forward.. they are pretty easy... unless u do it twice!!!.. blue greens good stuff, really makes u not wanna fall in... but i havnt sailed it in 2 years, spent to much time between corros and vass, but my point is its still a fun spot, but i wouldnt bother sailing it without freestyle.. id play halo3

in aus u dont see any spinney freestyle s*&t cause were still a few years behind europe

I'm in North America these days (long story, involving a sheila of course).

You won't see the spinning stuff here either, in general. All of Bonaire, it seems.

Never seen in Hawaii in 3 trips (must have been in wrong places), mostly jumping. Seen 2-3 guys with basic stuff in Hatteras, might have been in the wrong time of the year - August. Just about never seen any driving inland from spot to spot.

I've seen the repetitive spinning freestyle at an event with PWA people once. That was it. I lasted about 18 minutes there, til me broke the friggin' mast.

My point remains it's a 1-2% top sailor type of sailing. Me still reckon this kind of sailing is a watcher's thing, for pervs, not a I-want-to-pick-up-windsurfing-to-do-it-too thing. Unlike porn, not that I would know.

Now we will hear never ending rants about what a great sport it is and if only the youth of today were better people…blah blah blah. Never mind the reality that the world is a different place than when windsurfing was popular and working on trying to adapt windsurfing to suit modern society.

It’s just playing, escapism or whatever it’s the same thing so why are you so arrogant to think you are such noble citizens because you windsurf?

You think it’s healthy; sure, windsurfing is hazardous and probably causes far more injuries than any supposed long term health benefits, just think of the sun damage to the skin and eyes for a start.

This IS a windsurfing forum...so we are allowed rant all day long about what a great sport it is if that's what we want. Every sport around has been trying to evolve and fit into the lifestyles of the modern society & trying to attract the younger generation, so are we.

You're probably arrogant about whatever sport it is that you do & think highly of it too...and if you don't, I feel sorry for you.

I'm sure all of us windsurfers go into the sport well knowing the side effects of skin damage etc and have taken due measures to protect ourselves. But bear in mind, all outdoor sports get the same kind of sun you know.

I gave my class a video editing assessment where they had to edit up a music video out of about 100 various short windsurfing, kiteboarding, and surfing clips. To my surprise, out of all the wavesailing, huge jumping, looping, freestyle, clips they were given, the most talked about and most used clips were the overhead helicopter shots of the fanatic and neilpryde team blasting across the ocean on slalom/freeride gear, jumping from crest to crest of the swell, and all 28 students used these clips.

Yup, that's what has gotten my mate into it. The promise of speed.

btw - can we please put a ban on the term extreme sports, it is just so uber geigh

But... oh.
Can I still drink Pepsi Max?

I think that different things catch the eye, and tricks, freestyle, wavesailing, speedsailing all catch different eyes, had two 12 yo's come up to us about a month ago wanting to talk about how fast we were going. I think more colorful sails needs to happen. My 3 favourite sails are the most boring white and grey, WTF were Gaastra thinking with these colours? Yes they perform brilliantly which for me is the most impt thing, but as for eye catching, pathetic

yep i reckon the same

- more vibrant, solid coloured sails

- more affordable entry level gear

- simple rigging (camless)

i agree that it seems that freestyle and wavesailing really only appeals to those folk who have been sailing for a season or more (with a few exceptions) and who can only then appreciate it's difficulty. It seems for most newbies, just getting out there on the water is what they want , and they'll probably develop a taste for the ubergeigh aspect of the sport later sometime down the track

our local goldcoast shop will do a new entry level package (x3 mast, solo sail, extension, base, x3 boom, funster board) for under $2000 which imho is pretty reasonable considering the rig will take people a long way as they advance. Would be great if there was some way to keep prices down close to the grand
