We lived on a street of 2 acre bush blocks with not much in the way of fencing 10 years ago. The bloke over the road got an electronic device to keep his dog from straying from his yard. Worked great at first, but eventually the dog got used to it & started venturing out of limits.

Thinking maybe the same could happen if we had permanent electronic shark deterrent devices installed along our coast & it could render the mobile units useless.

Sounds right. Install them immediately. I don't wear a shark shield thingy so having less protected people in the water makes my chances of being chosen less.

The problem that is being experienced at Toms is a different issue than what we had with Great Whites. I don't think people should couple the two together and say just kill the sharks.

Bronze whalers aren't endangered in anyway so thats the biggest difference from a Great White. But none the less they are creating a issue that IMHO needs to be seriously addressed. I don't agree with just killing, firstly because i don't believe its just one shark, id say we could be seeing different sharks everyday but what i would like is for Fisheries to Tag a few, find out what the story is. Don't just do nothing because IMHO someone eventually will get bitten. I know everyone says they are just bronzes, but i have never seen anything like what we are seeing now. Reports of Bronze whalers are popping up from Spot down reasonably often now.

I have had a interest in sharks for over 35 years, never heard anything like this. Im not saying its hasn't happened but that i haven't heard of it.

Fisheries after 4 weeks have put up a sign, thats honestly rather limp response to date IMHO..

My biggest concern with the cull was killing off large sharks that are slow to breed will/could leave a vacuum for smaller fast growing aggressive sharks. The cull killed around 170 large sharks over three meters from Freo to Hillarys. How much ground could a 4.5 m tiger hold and could we be seeing a start of what could be to come

I thought it would take many years to see any effect, but maybe its starting sooner rather than later. But until fisheries start to tag some more, we will have no info at all..

Im not saying this is what is happening, but id like something to prove my theory wrong, even if its others saying "Nope I've seen bronzes this thick in the past".

It's a pity they didn't cull the real sharks located at Harvest Terrace in West Perth

Thats not really a 100% far comment. What they have discovered is they cant install it in heavy waves. Mostly due to the boats having problems dealing with the waves. The actual Eco barrier may work just fine. All be it that they are having issues getting it set.

Having said that, at least the Ballina council is making an effort to do something. Thats a lot more than the WA coast is seeing..

I agree JB our govt here in the west don't seem bothered about the shark problem at all.

I think that Barnett and Co are a little more concerned with the 30 billion they owe.

I have emailed and called both fisheries and Recfishwest recently regarding shark fishing from the shore near local surf beaches.

Turns out their is no law on baiting, or fishing next to anyone in the water. In fact even to burley is fine. No hook size limitation and i even have a email that claims its illegal to fish for a totally protected species as long as you are not in possession of that fish. SO you could actually go out and target a Great White, catch it, drag it up to the boat and then release it. Thats what fisheries claim. Recfishwest agreed that is completely wrong. Talk about mixed messages.

On Friday night a local ranger turned up at Mindarie and stuck in a closed beach sign due to large shark sighting. Didn't bother to clear the water though

The silly part is cant find any other warning on either the SLSWA page, or the sharksmart web page
