Brown muddies were also in the Moore for a very long time before that nutsack Roennfeldt blabbed about it in the West fishing column. Had to have been one of the most stupid things I've ever seen any journo do, the joint was absolutely farkin raped within 6 months.

Can you imagine publishing the fact that an enclosed waterway less than an hour from a major city was crawling with big muddies? And what was worse was the fact that at the time they weren't protected by law as the bag limits only applied above the 26th.

One night there I called the fisheries hotline to report redneckfarknuckles wading around gidgying muddies only to be informed by the orificer that I must be mistaken as "you don't get mud crabs below Carnarvon"

Always wondered why more haven't turned up in the Swan though???

well Suba all I can think of is that something within the ecosystem has changed I see Woodo has noticed a few things as well. The water temp is something I've been noting only for a couple of years but have read that this has caused a heap of damage to abalone, crays, crabs and other species. The shark thing is a bit of a worry too, in a lifetime (42yrs) on the water I've seen the odd change, one that was really weird was the emergence of mud crabs in the Murchison during the mid nineties. The other has been Spanairds off Two Rocks. These species will probably have an impact on the metro/southern scene and may have caused an imbalance. Those fish kills around Leeman really worried me, some weird stuff has happened in the Peel Estuary over the last decade that guys who have lived down here for 50 years just can't recall ever happening before, definately worth noting and would explain why apex predators are hitting the shoreline for a feed.

Forget Spaniards off Two Rocks, Marlin were caught in Geographe Bay last summer!!

They were taking Spaniards (and big ones too) off Albany last summer, pretty sure there was a landbased Sharky down that way too.

I recall reading about Mud Crabs showing up in the Peel Harvey Estuary a couple of years back, along with the odd painted lady Cray being spotted around Rotto.

bit of a practical joke I think LS, I was really hoping that it might have been trueCan confirm that a bloke scooped a cray a couple of years ago though! there has been stories of sharks in the estuary, no reason why not as there is plenty for them to eat in here, I hooked an unidentified "thing" a couple of months ago that looked and acted like a shark for ten minutes, it was at night and we both called it a shark.

yep Thommo that sounds right just confirmed with the mother in law who's lived there since the late 60's, well kept info for a long time. Do you know when the Shark Bay blue manna's were found? I thought they were a southern species but obviously the current may work in reverse, you might get dhuies up your way one day!

My old man was catching them off that little jetty when we went up in 1981. he was catching crabs & cooking them in a huge pot they in the caravan park. I was digging up shellfish in the sand on the shoreline, catching fish...my dad was like where's all the fish, you didn't feed them to those dolphins again did you lol

Have had the days though when I was the only one out and it indeed felt sharky to the point of making friends with whoever ventured out - longboarders, sup'ers or lidders regardless

I feel the same way with my sessions these days...I'm happy to see up to 15 guys in the water, it makes me feel like the odds have slimmed down a bit...& now I guess I'll be thinking that way with the dolphins too. I've lived in a few places over the last 15 years where I was wishing there were other crew out & have made my decisions to surf spots based on numbers. Not from the point of view of too many, but too few (none) & opted for the place with other surfers. Made a new friend that way last week. There was a stretch of beach with just one other bloke & I paddled out & apologized, asking if he didn't mind if I joined him on this little sand bank. Ended up being more of a gas bag than a surf lol but yeah, don't like having it all to myself these days.

no seals at Little Island, that was something my brother mentioned to me the other day. He has had craypots off there for twenty years, I'll also add that the fishing has been pretty average offshore so far this season, maybe science can explain this as I'm at a loss

Maybe the seals have moved on as there's not enough food in the area for them

Or possibly the hundreds of boats parked there on weekends driving the poor buggers to leave

I ve only ever seen sharks surfing over twenty years ago. So they were around in the old days too..

Oh and if anyone is keen to understand a bit more about our Current shark problem and all the reports. Especially the massive increase in the reports from the south west region. It may have to do with the fact that the chopper they currently use is rented and they have just made a application to buy one for themselves for good. SOOOOOOO the best way to help along your purchase and show its needed value is to add a few extra sitings in just for good measure..We are all just getting conned. Sad part is it seems to be the surfers who are getting played a grade

Suba what would you know? Honestly i thought you would have played this game to death with this lot.. Im surprised no one has googled to get the answer Surely that would be quicker and cheaper...

should have just red thumbed it eh soley? But really enjoy the discussion and input side of this forum and can't abide those that really think we should cull or those that don't get that we are witnessing major changes to the ecosystem. I trust science and those that study the ocean to help us all work through this and to perhaps make our coastline a bit safer.

I know you don't like me to reply to your posts as my english skills aren't up to your standard but i agree most of your post.

But the problem is the scientists are saying shark numbers are lower then ever. They are also saying there is a complete imbalance in our eco system as well but that the answer isn't to kill more sharks. I agree with both of those ideals and if you agree with the scientists you'd agree with me.

Comercial fisherman who have something to gain from re starting commercial fishing for sharks have a agenda, but they say there are more sharks then ever. I cant find any scientists who say they agree with culling but i do often read on here about remarks made about the so called scientists, or the comments made to Suba who is at this moment studying sharks, claiming he and his science is wet behind the ear. So what scientists do we listen to? Do we google the online experts? That was my point.

As for my point about the government and spending, well no one seems to care that they are throwing thousands, no millions of dollars at this and doing absolutely nothing. I have been in talks with another interesting party lately (he confirmed my ideas to me) and to say the depth of miss handling of this problem by our state government is a joke is a understatement of biblical pre portions. Soon a few people (I hope) will be left with massive amounts of trouble. But only if the public can let go of the emotional side of the argument and look more at the facts and risks

Sorry i did type this and my last posts on a i phone so it could be worse than normal But we cant all be school teachers[}:)]

JB, I have no problem with your posts in regard to spelling/grammar and respect your insight and knowledge, I may disagree at times but think you can handle it. Again, you make valid points and do so in detail which I also respect. Zuke opened the thread with a reference to a fairly rare occurence that I found a bit alarming and a few of the regulars discussed other oceanic oddities that seem to tie in with the whole shark issue (which has clearly been a major issue in our great state) I just think the science behind it is our only hope but it's a massive and complicated issue that will need several solutions or ideas to provide a clear way forward. In the end they are dealing with the oceanic ecosystem's apex predators and I think most of us know how important they are to a balanced environment, one that we just happen to love to "play" in but for some it is their office and paycheck.

I think the problem has just been blown out of the water. With all these sightings this summer they are obviously out there.

No one has been eaten this summer. The choppers only see about 17% of the sharks (apparently) so they miss a lot. If they wanted to eat us and were rioting killing machines, we'd be getting attacked more often.

I still think if you aren't prepared to risk it (which is still a tiny risk), there's plenty of swimming pools in Perth.

A lot more people will drown this summer than be eaten by sharks. If peoples lives are what everyone wants to save, that would be a better place to start numbers wise.

Careful on the way to the beach though; far more likely to be killed on the way.
