If the Wavejet idea isn't feasible, you could contact Dreamfit for a custom solution. Dreamfit is a company started by a guy I knew at uni, Darren Lomman. He's done a bunch of custom projects (starting with a motorbike a paraplegic could ride while he was a student) and a lightweight propelled surfboard might be something he and his company could do. Or a beach wheelchair for getting to the water (although I'm sure they'd be available off the shelf - I've seen pictures before). Etc. Let me know if you need me to contact him - he might remember me. If you wanted to contact Dreamfit now would be the time since they typically get engineering students to work on projects as part of honours projects and it's a full year thing.

Kaz,

As well as being willing to kick into your fundraising, I work for a large media organisation and will be able to get both Journalists and Photographers to do a story that would help promote both your beach access issues, as well as help promote the Wavejet system in the main media; print and on-line (which may help motivate them to donate or substantially discount a system).

The story of the SeaBreeze family's offer of help is a story in itself...

PM me if you are interested.

Yeah that might be a great idea, I've a few other idea's of how in the water you could get from A to B as well but they include engineering knowledge -so yeah that could be a great idea -re getting in contact with people who could help me in that regard.

I'm in too kaz,
why don't you/we/sea breeze community hit up the " people's" company for true surfers... Ripaquickbong over east they run events for disabled surfers community events etc.

I'm sure the club us/ beach inspectors could get you down to the water in their 4x4s and use a soft top for a while till the jet comes through.

"Kaz the Spaz's Fundraiser"

Quiz night to raise funds, I can organise some vino for prizes and I'm sure some of us have a board or fishing gear et al that we'd be willing to put up for auction too????

No offense intended. Just taking the light hearted approach.

Seriously.

Would be a good excuse for a get together too

Mickle the cripple.

let me know if the fundraiser gets up and going i can organise some gear,(no not that type), or should i say product for a raffle !!
cheers

Good Onya Kaz. Like the website.

I'm keen to help with fundraising for sure. Maybe a option would be to get a shop somehow involved. If we could get some sort of show of support from a retailer than maybe wave jet may look more into getting on board.

I even like the idea of getting a local board shaped and handles fitted. Saldy you'd have to allow for others to help tow you around but its a starting point and i'm guessing they'd be a few keen to asist.

Am going to when the time is right and if needed, contact the Town of Cottesloe's local newspaper about my thoughts of dutch Inn.

My other idea, again if I need to and this may sound a bit out there, but I thought of going down to the ramp at Mettam's/North Beach and ask a whole a lot of different types of people (families/older people for example) weather they find the ramp there helpful, of great use to them and if so why? ...... just so it shows that any ramp/development Cottesloe does at Dutch Inn isnt JUST helpful to persons in wheelchairs.

Kaz,

I go past Mettams quite often when surfing or cycling... Mettams is popular with the oldies too because it has a number of ACROD bays right in front of the ramp - and has a solid hand-rail all the way to the waters edge...

OK I'm going do it myself and not wait for the council to put in a wheelchair ramp/access but I'm still gonna give it a shot, unlike the council I'm in a hurry compared to them -they take forever to do anything.... that said my dad thought about an idea to use a 'strecher' (you'll need two people each end) to get to the in shore and in the water in one go seeing as yo could go straight in the water...... it would also mean I'd be able to access most breaks which would be great, I took it a step further and drew this on paint ... get somebody to make it out of carbon fibre so it's really light and very easy to transport to and from the beach -idealy.

Btw that is the same chair have.

I'd look into commercial beach wheelchairs. If you google they're out there. Bloody expensive for what they are, though. Find someone who can TIG weld aluminium and you could do it for a lot less I reckon.

The problem with that is I will have to buy a van or a ute then because my car just fits my chair and my 6'8 board with enough room left for your genral beach stuff (something like above could fit alongside my board), beach wheelchairs are wider, longer and heavier -my day chair is made out of titanium and very compact for examples..

Also a beach wheelchair is like you say is a great idea but it means Leighton/Cott/City beaches are the only kinds beaches you can access -beaches that are completely flat -as a beach wheelchair is very heavy and cannot go up or down stairs. I'm in a very tricky situation as many know and I hope people don't think I'm being negetive..

Love to have a beer but on the other side in the East!

Have you tried these guys? They are from the Disabled Surfers Org.

http://www.surfershelpingsurfers.com/contacts.html#wa

or email

dsa@disabledsurfers.org

They have a couple of Perth numbers on their website....I am not sure how they are in the West but over here in the East the disabled surfers do an amazing job. They even have their own vehicles over here to get people back out there in the water.

I can put you in touch with a few people from Surfrider Foundation in the West if you need as well - just let me know.

I've been thinking alot about what you said regarding looking into beach wheelchairs and it would be very wise to get onto looking to get a 'beach' wheelchair or something similar as an option if you do want to go to a flat, sandy type beach or even out in the bush for some unkown reason - it would make a lot of sense, as for the transport issues well I'm sure I can get around that -could use my mates car....... when I said "...something similar" , this is why:

It means I get up and down stair if need be cos I'm still sitting in my lightweight day chair but also go everywhere a 'beach' wheelchair could go, it also isn't as bulky as a 'beach' wheelchair and I'm maybe could be designed slightly more compact as well....

EDIT: as for my other idea Im thinking of adapting something (using the nylon seat) like this...

I live close to / grew up near the Cott area that you are interested in. I may be able to help you out with a wheel chair that can be taken into the water. It is called a hippocampe beach wheelchair - www.hippocampe.co.uk/.

Cott council have a committee that looks into access issues to the town's beaches and I will ask around and get the contact details to you. I would imagine that you need to get a bit of firepower behind you to get any council to move - but this committee may be a good start.

Let me know what you reckon about the beach wheelchair, no sweat if you're keen on trying something else.
