Finally I have started to get my board shed up ,and the boards out of the garage!

My mate welded the structure togeather ,and we will be putting the roof on soon.

It holds my

14ft C4 Vortice
11ft 6 Naish
9ft Bear surfboard
Kids nipper boards
Paddles

Running the risk of sounding like a right prick here,it looks as though you have wasted some space. For a three board rack you could have made much more room with a better design. Personally I would have stored the boards vertically against the wall so you could walk through the side path without obstructions. But heck that's just me telling it as it is.

I guess your design is way more kid friendly though - they have some new monkey bars to swing off.

The problem with them being vertical is that they would of been way to high for the garage ,which would mean the garage roof couldn't slope down to cover the boards.
You also got to consider one board is 14ft!

Even though there are 3 racks there's still heaps of room for the kids nipper boards ,and other boards ..... so really it can hold upto 8 boards and some can also go on the ground.

Overall I'm stoked with it!

Is your neighbour OK with the racks ?

If not, and if he wanted to be a prick a complain to Council, they'd order it's removal as it's within 900mm of the boundary and classified as a 'structure' and any slab within 500mm of the boundary needs connected drainage and DA consent.

Maybe buy them a nice bottle of wine or a case of beer to ensure they are onside.

Looks great bro and sorry to cast doubt but I deal with that crap so often when neighbours want to cause trouble !

Not nearly as much space as I would have liked. I tend to do everything by eye and then discover later on how badly I've miscalculated. By failing to calculate.

I'll be cladding the outer wall in cedar shingles but leaving the "door" open.

I was going to run with horizontal rails exactly as you have done but Jonathan suggested racks to mount the boards on their rails against the walls so that I can walk into the shed. I think that is what Oliver was suggesting above.

Hey Surfanimals, I didn't kill no Lindberg kid - I'm just saying that we got away with our construction that looked very similar to boylos's by calling it a 'lean to' (It also goes right up to the border). I don't doubt that you are probably the expert in these matters for your particular council in NSW.

If you want, you can help my neighbor's fight to get ours pulled down. I reckon you would get on well with the old coot.

Yes it certainly is Cypress on the uprights. I was happy to go with Treated Pine but the lumber yard guys convinced me that cypress was a better option. I've never seen a termite in this neck of the woods.

if you are leaving access open, it will certainly look better than treated pine and suit the house from what i can see.cutting cypress makes your nose run and if you get a splinter and don't get it out, it will be infected next day- no wonder termites are keen on the stuff

Nice racks ! Ignore the thumbs. Yes, council rules are different everywhere... if your neighbor complains, sock him ! I'm sure you're mates with the neighbors anyway ! Yours (top pic) is easy open storage, for boards with fins...

Here's a really simple vertical racking system, slightly more suited to shortboards, or SUP's under 9'6 if your ceilings are under 9'6 ! I'm lucky, my garage is 10'6 high. But the Naish 14 is strung up to the ceiling joists.

I painted a piece of 3x2 (75x50) (paint is optional ), and bought some 20mm dowel, and used a 20mm drill bit, then the dowel pieces just jam in there. If slightly loose use some tape, or wax (not glue, so it remains easy to unassemble one day). Then screw it to the wall. Actually, I screwed to wall, then inserted in the dowel. The rack does not carry any weight, and the dowel just acts as spacers between boards. Some cheap foam at the base to protect noses and tails is also good.

Cost, was probably about $30-$40 odd, for a racking system that receives about 15 boards. Cost might be $10-$15 for 4-5 boards.

I meant to say, a bit of shade cloth on the outdoor racks would be good. The power of direct sun, and expansion of air (gas) as it heat up.... it does horrible things to board in the long run.... hence breathing screws in big boards.... Don't underestimate the power of the sun.... if you have a stringer in the board, the fibreglass and resin will bond to the stringer, and "pop away" from the foam.... we call this "de-lamination" !! A very bad thing !

I took a photo of our lean to this arvo. This is what I mean by vertical - the boards are stacked up against the wall - and all are off the ground. I guess it's not as neat as your board rack boylos, but I have older kids with bikes, fishing rods, bins and other sh!t stored in there as well and can still walk through.

I'm not supposed to have three boards and I think it would be a bit hard to have all three leaning against the wall - as it would be to high to access.

I bought some timber hooks from Bunnings to secure the boards I use a occy strap to secure the big board to the wall and a hook which works to secure my stonker to the wall using the board bag handles.



Surfanimals - as you can see I have no gutters and the lean to goes right up to the fence - I'm guessing my neighbor is probably similar to you. After he complained, the council guy came in looked at the structure, asked some questions. I then refered the council nanny to our builder and haven't heard anything further in a year - my guess is he probably thought our neighbor is whining tool.

That's the one I'm not supposed to have - it's a dc 9'4" (cam's old one) and I love it - but I lost the vent screw on my first outing so I've only ever used it once.
