I am in the throws of deciding on a new board at the moment.

I have got my eye on one of the new Starboards - 9'8" x 30" - but am wondering whether I should go for the extra length just over 10'.

Already knew how to surf, and started SUP around 6 months ago on a Starboard 12' x 32". I have been surfing a lot at Yallingup and other places (south-west WA) recently in pretty reasonable sized surf.

Am ready to move on to a smaller board, but not too small and lose stability and speed.

Any thoughts??????

Thats the PSH 9-2 under my arm.I would have love to come to the demo day but I was at Couran Point all weekend.

Diver you will progress really fast without knowing your size and weight there is heaps of great boards from 9-2 to 10-0 to pick from. I did the same as you started on a 12-0 then I bought a 10-3 , I out grew the 10-3 really fast and dropped down to a 9-10 only 4 weeks later and then to a 9-2 8 weeks later

At that weight you suit any of the production boards or go custom. 9-8 x 30 ??? I think you can go narrower and shorter than that.

One things for sure brooko, don't spoil it by riding your new board in less than glassy conditions. Shorter boards are for primo days only.

Yeah scotty I totally agree for sure They just dont work in sideshore blown out crap.
Its hard enough to paddle the 9 6" when its totally crap.

Even considering getting an 11 2 " starboard for the crap days, just to get me in the water

All this chat is probably better in a new thread. This thread had some good stuff going.

But...I find the bigger SUPs bounce around more in crappy crosss or onshore conditions. Especially once surfing over 3ft.

Scotty I am around 93kg too and 54yr old, I like 137 to 142 liters thats what I target for volume then, fine out the ends in the shaping bay.

I think we'll find that most of the 9'0 to 9'6 will be around this volume eventually.
The 9'6 PSH ripper that I paddled was around this volume, the Oxbow 9'6 because of its rolled deck was in the low130, not enough for me for comforable paddling.

Thanks for the info Rod,
I realise this board will not be comfortable for paddling. I am looking at a finer line here so to maximize performance on the wave. i.e built the samllest possible board that I can ride. And ride in ideal conditions only. Then if it ends up a little small, my get out of gaol card will be lose a few kgs. So I think 125 litres fits the bill. What do you think?

A friend just bought a PSH 9'6" wide and although I rode one recently I didn't take much notice of the shape and make-up at the time but after puting a deck grip on the new one today I realised the amount of work that must go into getting them right.

I rekon they look great but i did notice the thickness through the middle is carried so close to the rail. This would make it super stable but I would have thought with the extra width you could round the deck more to get less volume in the rails so you could tip it over more easily into bottom & top turns and get the rails to bite more.

If boards are to go 8' or less with high performance shortboard type surfing in mind, I think thickness will be the key. And after looking at the PSH 9'6 wide, width and the deck curve (top) could end up being almost as important as the bottom shape.

What I'm thinking is to keep volume in an 8' board you would need to go thicker, and to get a good rail shape you would need a step rail or more agressive curved deck, and if you went the curved deck option a bit more width would help with stability.

Am I on the right path here?
Can someone build one and let me know how it goes.

8' x 29.5" x 4.8" with curved deck w/ concave in nose to dbl concave through the middle into a nice V in the tail. Rounded square tail and slight pulled in nose. Please!?!

Note: The only thing I have ever shaped is a sailboard fin, so I'm not talking from any experience. I'm just interested in how it all works.

Bcannas,
I am building something similar. 8'3" x 30 x 4". Thicker only makes them feel corky, its the width that gives stability. Hiding volume means hard to shape nice rails, more domed deck and therefore probally not anty easier to ride. Let you know how it goes.

Here you go Bnaccas, 3 images of PDFs of AKU designs, you can't load pdf directly on seabreeze you have to take a pic of your screen, then re size and load the image. Two of the boards are actually made one is to be delivered next week to Brooko in Vic.

This is my 7'10" board if you do a search of my pics you will find some images

this was a suggested design for Brooko but the nose was too full for his taste so I did not make this one

This is the design that I actually made for Brooko, I'm a bit late finishing this board my bad back gave me heaps this week and I was on light duties, couldn't go in yesterday. I have some pics of this board but I'm sending them to Brooko today
I hope his satellite connection handles them I have re sized them

Awesome looking board, Im really excited to get it now

I hope we get some off shores and swell in the next 2 weeks.

Yeah let us know what happens. Looks like a good setup.
I'm thinking thicker for float, not for stability.

Thanks Rod, that stuff is pretty cool. Brooko, let us know how it goes when you get it.

It looks like a lot of tail lift/rocker in those pix? Would they come out like that?

Also what construction you using, foam, glass etc?

And most importantly, how much?

Cheers
Brendan

The first pic almost looks like my dream board (experiment).

Bnaccas,
that is the way they come out. What you are looking at is the actual 2D rocker profile for the 2D plan shape. The PDF file actually measures the OC (over curve ) of the design. I have to redo the design to get the real 3D rocker profile to match the plan shape.

That amount of tail lift really loosens the boards up. I think I explained my reasoning earlier in this post.

A couple of pics for the gang.

This first image is the current way of two, for installing fin boxes into EPS. What I have done is inset a small block of high density PVC foam into the blank. The PVC block is covered with a layer of 6oz glass and then set into the board. Another layer of 6oz glass is placed onto the surface of the finished board surrounding the PVC block. The surface glass is put there for two reasons, the first is to in crease the surface strength of the EPS foam and the 2nd is so I have something harder to sand to when I smooth the blocks down to match the boards contours. The board is glassed and the boxes are set into the hard foam not the light weight EPS foam.

This is the bottom of Brooko's new shooter showing the box set up.

This is a profile shot showing the rail colouring, it is a bit glowy.

Should be some waves for the early tomorrow.

great subject matter, the issue for me is coming up with a design under 8' for my wife annie, she can paddle a performance longboard 9' x23" x 2 5/8",problem is in hook/pivot turns, they get a bit sinky.she has surfed a laguna bay 8x27x4 1/2" peerformance shape in head high waves and found exactly what blane said, tic tac flappy surf and at 48kg she couldnt sink a rail, someone give me a board under 8'x 25 1/2"x3 1/4".annie surfs pretty good and this volume could still be a bit big.i was hoping the phs crew have shaped kids/womens boards and found a performance shape and size that works.

Consider getting a locally shaped board to your specs - sounds like you/annie knows what you want. It's a good time to support fellow australians and get a quality custom board.
