Ive been SUPin two and a half years now, totally addicted to the sport.

Have such a hoot on SUP's (surf mostly) Me and my friend Loz are almost always the only girls out there?

Just wondering WHY? What's stoppping other women from getting into SUP? I often think this is such a fun sport there should be a heaps of women out here doing this, but there isn't.

I know there's barriers (busy life, child rearing, cost, work, transport) but you would think many more would become addicted like me....

Is the sport too hard to start with?

Discussion please!

Up here at Currumbin there is a big amount of girls getting into. The percentage of people buying sups in the shop would have to be 60% male and 40% female.

Anytime on the creek or waves now at currumbin you can spot sup chicks everywhere.

Maybe start an intro for girls in your area? You will be surprised at how much interest you may get.

I think there are plenty of gals who WANT to SUP but don't.

Yes, intro days would help for sure, more support to get over the fear factor.

We have club days up here on the coast but hardly any girls turn up...

We have quite a few girls in the SUP club here, and there is even an all girl SUP riders group in the area too.

It feels strange explaining this to a woman, but ....

Most women don't do sport. They do either productive stuff to keep the house/home/life going, or they do stuff that lets them relate to family/friends/other women in general.

In that context some women will play golf or tennis or netball or walk or whatever it is so they can hang with other women and talk about stuff.

Women don't get the thrill of the chase in hunting down that perfect board or or paddle or bike or kite or computer or whatever it is we guys desperately need to be complete.

Besides, SUPs are too big, too heavy and too expensive for anybody sensible to be interested in. The sea is cold and dangerous and full of sharks.

Women like you, who are addicted to SUP, are what we call "good sports", and that is a whole topic on it's own.

Check this for an example:

Why don't women have as many brain cells as men?

They don't have a penis to put them in.....

i agree with angie. there are probably more girls paddling in the creek then guys. ok a percentage would be dabbling with hire boards, but i reckon a lot will come through.

angie, simone, supsa is thinking of having a ladies race day one sunday morning in the creek as introduction to the race gene, what do you think?
cheers

Hey sunny you have to try something in order to get addicted
You missed a few barriers, fear, self doubt, lack of encouragement.
Years back there was the same problem in windsurfing so in Vic women on windsurfers (WOW) was created, with very positive results. Maybe a similar program could be introduced,eg women on stand up paddleboards WOSUP.

Let's fast forward 2 years from now. I can assure you - you won't be asking these questions.
Sup is spreading like wild fire and the popularity will only head north.

Not all chicks want to compete.

Just up the coast we have a group of about 8 of us that go our regularly some like to surf some like to just paddle.

I know of about another 6 ladies that paddle at all different times due to work, kids etc.

Same goes for the Sunny Coast. I would love to have more ladies in the club for the surfing side. Ontop of what we do in the club already, Sue and I were talking about organising a once a month/6week distance board get together. BOP / Flatwater / Downwind etc on rotation.

More ideas the better.

Here on the south coast we would have close to equal numbers of guys and girls out on the water (waves and flat). We currently have about 35 people in the Jervis Bay region with their own SUPS (not bad for a total population of a couple of thousand!). And in the last 12 months at least 6 female friends have bought sups.

They find them easier to handle on their own than kayaks and they are not afraid of getting out there and having a go in the waves. I don't actually think there is anything stopping girls from getting into supping, its just that lots of people haven't really seen it yet (we don't get out much down here in the country LOL)

And yes, lots of women are busy riding or competing on their horses. I did 15 years of camping in the horse float travelling all over the countryside but I have learned that a SUP doesn't require new 'shoes' every 6 weeks, feed every day, stabling every night, lots of rugs, or veterinary attention. I get home from a paddle and throw it in the shed and forget about it till the next paddle!

And if my SUP doesn't do as it is told, there is only one person to blame unlike the crazy horses that often have minds of their own!
