sure is , a spiral you can spiral out of. The black dog is a bitch effects so many and seems to be getting worse , why? I mean everyone has **** piled on them in different degrees , throughout their lives. I for one think exercise is a great starting point to deal with it , for one when your training and concentrating on a goal your not sitting around thinking about all the **** stuff in your life Funny thing is , every little goal you reach makes you strive for another further distancing yourself from your troubles , works for me anyway.

Download a boxing timer app. on your phone (Boxing Timer Pro is a goodie) and kit up with wraps, gloves a heavy punch bag and skipping rope. Just one session of 12 3-minute rounds a week will do wonders for you (take lessons to get right technique). Skip, fast jab, fast cross, fast jab/cross, skip, hard jab, hard cross, hard cross/jab, skip, combo fast/hard jab/cross x 2 and then finish off with a pyramid (jab, cross, jab/cross - 2 x jab, 2x cross , 2 x jab/cross - 3 x jab, 3 x cross.......all the way up to 10 and then back down to 1 x each) or a round of burpees. 1 minute rest in between rounds but with 10 sit-ups included. Focus on dancing around the punch bag on your toes during the rounds and weaving side to side to engage your core throughout. It's a killer workout and the best / most efficient one hour of exercise you'll give yourself. (Disclaimer: I guess. It works for me! Good luck champ!)

A lot of agro where you surf?

Typically sucks than when you think your looking good you invariably come down with an illness, injury or bout of depression? At the end of the day it is a typical cycle nearly all of us have to deal with?

Glad to day I have been cutting back on the nightly bottle of wine. Biggest inspiration has been reading the book "Lone Survivor' by Marcus Luttrell. Highly recommended.

Not necessarily. High intensity boxing workouts are as,good as it gets. I went to a technique class a few years back. Unfortunately the usual trainer was off. It turned out to be the full fitness gig. Not sure how many times I nearly vomited. Might go back one day!!!

I was kind of kidding - boxing training for SUP surfing - but as you say, getting super fit works wonders for whatever you are doing. And that's the challenge - I will have all the best intentions but when push comes to shove I don't do all the exercise I intended. For me the surf trips provide excellent motivation - I want to be at my peak and rip on the waves. So I just think of that trip and paddle harder, run longer, etc. Also I find the core exercises are critically important. It make such a difference to balance, minimizing back pain, and much more if my core is strong.

You know, comments like that put everything in perspective... Worrying about boards, surf sessions and fin selection are so trivial when you have to deal with the darkness of depression. I count myself as lucky, but my youngest son struggles. Its bloody tough and unfair...

Doc's are pretty helpful with depression these days, just got to find the right one.

Not when I put on a gun show brother!

Seriously, I've concluded that doing weights at the gym is a waste of time. Instead develop functional muscle by paddling, box fit-ing and running. Three moderate-intense 45 minute to 1-hour sessions of each is all you need to keep in shape I reckon!
