Outside of not paddling enough, it might seem like a silly question, but I'm really interested to find out what people think it is that stops them from paddling faster or being able to paddle longer?

TV, red wine and yes, old age.But seriously I go backwards if I try to do much and end off worse for it. You really do get diminishing returns as you age and it's important to do just the right amount if you want to do it all again tomorrow .Most of us are not competing and so to train to go further and faster is pointless.

A lot of the above mentioned like beer & pizza. But also throw in family (spending time with them or doing stuff for them). Also work. I work fifo so get limited time to paddle on my days off. No opportunity to paddle after work after 12 HR days in the dessert

I have been off the booze for 2 months now whilst recovering from a back injury that turned into sciatica

I was never a problem Drinker more just average but now I'm not Drinking at all I can really see how much it was taking away from me, I now do nightly yoga sessions instead of beer sessions and I have lost weight, have way more energy, feel more flexible and fitter than I have in a long time my diet is much better as when I'm tipsy or hungover I tend to make bad food choices and my back has healed

So short answer beer!!! probably the biggest thing holding me back from releasing my inner shredder

Still get bugger all paddle time due to work but hey what can ya do!

All of the above answers Movement Lab are True - I'm 54yo and this is how I've always lasted the longest - Is all the Girls I have been with say I'm the best they have ever slept with:- because I read all the Girls William Shakspere ( The Tongue is Mightier than the Sword ) True Story, I'm like Ron Jeremy's offsider, hahaha.

I reckon it comes down too mindset , I'm 45 and felt washed up at 33 when I stopped playing footy , with my body pretty banged up. So sat around drinking to much smoking to much and then had a hip reco at 38 , my shoulders where always sore , plus back ect ect. Then I got into sup and started training still doing the bad stuff , got inspired buy blokes like Kelly and a few older do uses in their sixties and thought **** these blokes are awesome , turn up before light in winter and just keep going.so I dropped the excuses , read every fitness and health manual ever printed , started eating better , drink less and exercise smarter. Well cut a long storey short my back is great , shoulders heaps better , hips heaps better , My opinion is diet is numero uno , then exercise mainly bodyweight stuff , Body weight training is king , strengthens , stretches , lubricates and helps regain lost mobility.I'm know able to do one leg pistol squats on the leg I had hip reco on. The best part time is no issue because if you have a couple minutes you can do the exercises anytime throughout your day.

Beer (I brew craft beer at home), ice cream, young kid, lack of sleep,...but a gps is great to keep me honest when I paddle the race board as no excuses for going slow!

I reckon it is a performance enhancer if you don't smoke it. The sleep you get after a vape or a cookie must be great for muscle recovery. I do more excerise when I'm 'on' than when I'm 'off'. Run times improve as well.

Lack of cross-training....SUP requires very limited movement in legs, gluts and hips. If you don't cross-train then your hamstrings start pulling up and all-round performance goes out the window. I know, because I don't cross-train and my hammies take a hammering if i try and run. I can's stand yoga so I'm pretty buggered.

I reckon running, yoga and diet and you'll be a better paddler without having to paddle.

Windsurfing, SUP'ing is only a backup sport for me when there is no wind, as well as being on a list of other things to do.
Windsurfing is a speeeeeed fix that SUP'ing can't compare to, even in the waves, speeeeding back out for more.

I wasn't going to say anything but when I said I was replacing beer with yoga sessions - there was a little herbal supplementation going on aswell ( I'm not some sort of monk after all)

I actually find it great for aiding in recovery from injury and helps me get right Into my yoga sessions, it relaxes you and helps to reduce inflammation unlike alcohol which increases inflammation. After a long day of work a couple of beers and I'm stuck to the couch hard but a little smoke and I motivate myself by watching some sup or kite vids and do a bit of stony mindsurfing then I am amp d to do my exercises and I really enjoy them

( hypothetically speaking of course- all fiction)

Awesome responses-and some pretty funny ones too.

Good info to either help make people faster...or slower.

I'm thinking next comp show up with a few cases of beer and some pizzas and that's at least half of the line up gone!

How are your symptoms with this? Message me if you like..I worked with a client a couple of years ago with this and we made some good progress. I had to do a little research as I hadn't heard of it before then. I'll see if I still have anything on file.
