Low tide Sat Morn and waves have washed through the first level of the reef tower. They reckon no webcast as too dangerous to put people out there. 15-20 and not very perfect. Wow!

having middle aged has beens that never were beens(99 % of the general surfing public), hanging out to see who 'chickens out' and sniggering at them is just pathetic imo

Nice quote. That's the internet in a nutshell.

Sounds a bit like the "rugby world cup" over in our back yard

That is so nuts, watched a lot of it yesterday, mindblowing.

Any theories on why most of em don't wear helmets? Same for the SUP guys when they surf out there. The most likely way to die out there would be a head injury I would have thought.

Might be like footy , seemed like every bloke i played with that had a stack hat seemed to always cop the head high stuff. If i had the nuts to even attempt that id have a helmet a kevlar vest and a little air tank strapped to my thigh just in case

Bugger I missed that one, actually had to do some work.

Still have the fingers crossed for a Slater v Wright final.

Yep, I was there. Seen it happen. Watched it a million more times on the Green Iguana I think it is. One of those old Jack McCoys anyway.

No jet ski assist in those days either. 3 best waves, no jet skis.

I read somewhere that the only person to have died at chopes was a local that had his skull crushed on the reef. I think it was a surfline article.

That was faarking insane , talk about lifting the bar in surfing , what would you have to do to out do that re the helmets yes that can save you on a impact but they can also cuase serious necking injury , when you get sucked over and peleted back down they catch in the water also most ripping your head off.

I'm guessing a helmet provides more leverage for water to grab hold of, so you get worse neck injuries. No point having a perfectly preserved skull if your neck's broken.

Are you guys for real? I was getting at the fact that it's a load of macho BS actually. The new Gaths are light as and have very little water resistance.

Goatie I speed ski raced for over 10 years I could list more than a dozen guys that had their nerve torn out of their neck from the front arm due to the helmet catching water when they fell extending the neck ...and yes some had Gath hats on. These guys now walk around with no use in one arm.

20 points perfectione de Jeremy Flores c'est tres bien! Owen scoring a 19+ is also great. This young guy is going to rock the world of surfing in the years to come. His little sister will soon climb the rankings of the best of the best. Awesomeness.

Gath helmets restrict your peripheral vision as well. Worn them windsurfing but hated them surfing for that reason, as well as ripping your head off. If I was dropping in at chopes I would like no restrictions at all to my vision.

Some of those waves were beyond description
