It always amazes me how apparently sane men completely lose their ** over a second rate wave and want to fight for ownership. Likewise I am also saddened by the fact that something as beautiful and natural as surfing has to be poisoned by the worst traits of human beings. Does surfing bring out the best or worst in us? All the tribal, earn respect crap is just like religion. A human construct designed to enable people to gain exclusive control over others. I always thought surfing was about freedom, joy and self expression. Not being forced to subscribe to some surfers religious rules. The only basis for the regulation of sups is safety.


Need i remind everyone and anyone no one and i mean no one owns a wave no matter how long you have surfed at a break. FACT.

One of the common points of view that i've always found ridiculously amusing is the "SUPs should only catch the waves that no one else wants" which usually goes hand in hand with the "SUPs shouldn't surf breaks that have other surfers on other types of craft" line of crap. My view is pretty much the same as most of the crew on this thread.... As long as you are competent enough to safely surf with others around you, then by all means. However, if you know that you aren't (and the biggest hurdle here is one being completely honest with ones self) then find somewhere away from others until you become competent. And the "SUPs are dangerous to others" line doesn't fly with me. I surf Bondi on a SUP and it is fairly chaotic out there most days. When its mainly local crew out there you could call it organised chaos. But reality is most injuries out there are the result of wayward shortboards. Just watch any episode of Bondi Rescue.

meh, I hate crowds so usually I piss off down the beach and catch other waves if there are a bunch of people out. I am 50 this year I have surfed since i was 6 and I think I have only ever had 2 people say anything disparaging to me on my SUP, one of those was an old surfer that seemed to be stoned and the other was some wanker in Sydney who thought the whole beach was his. In both these cases the easy thing to do is to ignore the wanker in the room. I surfed for a couple of hours last weekend at a beach pretty much with no one out except for a couple of my mates for most of the time. The truth is that unless you are in SEQ (or byron) or around Sydney there is HEAPs of room to find a wave and get on with one another. My next move is to gun up to a 10fter.

As a 50 year surfer I think a lot of the friction is because of 'the surfer mindset', that is that every wave is to scrambled over like a flock of seagulls over a chip. Surfers dont like to share even though its almost impossible not to. So surfers see every person in the water as competition to stop them surfing. I get that, especially in crowded cities and when the surfs good.
On the other hand I started SUPping a few years ago and I found that you dont need waves to SUP, once youre on your feet youre SUPPing it up rivers, around the harbour and in the surf. I dont have to squabble for the random chip because theres a smorgasboard of places to go now, but in the surf Ive got the advantage of mobility and speed, picking the waves from a distance and I think some surfers know that too and theyre not happy. Im in Sydney so it can get ugly with the wrong people claiming ownership of the ocean. I enjoy the mindset of the SUP people who are happier to share.

Nearly every surf I have friendly chats with the surfers who usually tell me I'm shredding it.

The worst surfs I have are when I think Im pissing everybody off and get all unsure of myself... then I head down the beach for a wee bank of my own.

That story about Omaha sounds hilarious, a pack of angry city folk playing hardcore surfer dudes in Daddys million dollar termite infested vacation house. What a crap wave compared to all the goodness to be found in other East Coast spots nearby!


Not city folk, these guys live here and around the area in normal homes - not sure why you need to make a dumb point like this.

'Her indoors' and I took the SUPs to Pittwater and it's magical cruising the national park, just gliding along, same with Sydney Harbour. With a surfboard you need waves, with a SUP any water will do and often the water takes a back seat to the view. I reckon surfers are envious of SUPs.

Hmmmmmm again. I think there may be a disconnect here and with this entire thread. This thread is 110% about waves and surfing - not flat water paddling. My understanding is that flat water paddling does not involve any interaction with prone surfers??

Ok ok ok, so they are super tough and you don't want to mess with them or they will hurt your ute but don't call them city folk or they might get hurt feelings.

Good call DARTH,just pointing out that there are a lot of experienced & skilled waterman that SUP.
Ether due to health issues or just another skill to master SUPing is a great way to stay on the water
