Any. Heads up on good cheap places to stay in newy? There dosnt seem to be a caravan park here by? Not sure I could be wrong?

Unfortunately I moved out of a house overlooking Newcastle ocean baths and now live on a smallish yacht. However, there are two backpackers in Pacific St Newcastle. They are one block from Newcastle Beach, 10 min drive over the hill to Dixon Park and adjacent good cafes. They are both surfer/competitor friendly. The YHA is a grand old building and probably has more space to store your SUPs. If you are attending events the paid parking is not a drama. There is free parking on the ocean side of Newcastle beach.

I just miss the 0/45s surfing and don't yet have a race or shortboard, so this year I am just going to turn up as a spectator. If the organisers need a surfing judge I would be happy to help. I am not qualified but have judged heaps of longboard comps over the last couple of decades and worked around the Surfest judges etc. I don't know anyone, so fairness is assured.

Just got off my arse to enter Saturday's DW race. Sadly can't commit more time due to work but looking forward to it for sure.
Sam.

4.6 metre, 10 second period south swell predicted for Thursday!

What's the call on the location if it is out of control at Dixon Park? Does it get moved to Blacksmiths or Catherine Hill Bay?

Have Blacksmiths or Stockton as backup

Unreal - in the corner at Blacksmiths! Peaky A-frame off the tip of the breakwall. Love that place in a big south swell.

Could even go that bank inside the entrance - with judges and spectators on the breakwall.

Never surfed south Stockton - does that get good banks?

Man, sounds like you go thst hard that they would be better off holding the comp on the right off Moon Island. The judges could paddle over while the admirers line the breakwater. The cave would make a good temporary triage.

Sad but yes true in some respects. Although the NSW state title DW did actually have great dw conditions. So hopefully Will Andios can produce some of the same magic...

At least it looks like there is going to be surf! My next brilliant proposition is to hold the surf comp at the next easily accessable break south of Blacksmiths that handles a decent swell and strong SW winds. Yes, Crabs Creek. So the locals don't get too pissed about having the sacred right crowded out by SUPs the comp should be run on the killer left.

Nobody will need a 400 mm camera lens to get photos of this event. It is going to be big chunks of southerly grounswell exploding metres from dry rock testing the competitors to the max. Fred Hemmings would be proud of me!

Yep it will still be on, Windguru shows a very light Southerly, so will probably be Blackies to Redhead & hope some of that Southerly swell is still around. Could be good to watch everyone coming in at Redhead?

have you entered yet?

OK, next request: Can we swap Saturday's downwinder and Sunday's flatwater races around to make the most of no wind on Sat and howling SWer on Sunday?

Casso,

What howling SW on Sunday? This site's graph as above is showing a gentle alternating offshore turning to a near calm S breeze? I suppose you are already planing a big night out after you win the surfing?

Why would the average man even bother entering these events when the status quo want everything customised to their needs?

Ha ha - you trouble maker Casso! Fancy wanting a DW race in actual downwind conditions. Looks like pretty mild winds both days now, at least the surf is looking alright.

Should be a fun event, heading up early Thursday.

It's not a static graphic but a link to the live, dynamic Seabreeze graph and like the weather it is prone to change.

Yeah - good one goose. I'll be lucky to make through to Friday's heats.

I'm not sure what that even means - you may want to look up the definition of status quo.

Looking at the conditions, Casso is making a good call here regarding the DW race. Sunday is looking alot better.

A downwind race with a 15 knots tail wind will reflect and showcase the discipline a lot more than a 3 knot tail wind :)

I can't see how you are even going to make it to Friday. From your previous post on another thread it is obvious I am going to be the "goose" trying hard to free surf in the middle of the contest zone blocking you best waves. Bit of bad luck?

I Agree. I know that as a DW 'punter' myself, I generally have no interest in entering a DW race unless I know there will be reasonable conditions as I am not interested in paddling into a side wind for 10-12 ks. As difficult as it may be for organisers I think that numbers for these things would be better if they can be held in DW conditions where possible.

Yeah I agree with Casso .... Sambo and Pete and I'm sure all entered would rather swap the days so a down wind race could be run in the best possible conditions of either day considering flat water racing isn't really to effected by wind as much as a down wind race... Hence the name :)

Can also see the difficulty in swapping days from a risk management point of view. Possibly have boats and the like tee'd up for Saturday that may not be possible to move to Sunday.

Anyway, Saturday's forecast kind of looks good for the Ace anyway.

Nothing spare big fella. Once again learnt on Sunday not to loan you fast gear as it just winds up hurting me.

Got a spare Whopper if you're keen though!
