Just a quick update and a list of sponsors signed up.

Naish
Macteq
WB electrical
Jacksons tree lopping
moby pool care
bonga/gsi
Quickblade
Dakine
excel
von piros productions
Creatures of lesiure
Solrx sunscreen

And more still to come.

Its good to see some in the industry supporting the industry and giving back to build the future. Its also really good to see the out side of industry support which is what the sport needs for it to grow in the right directions.

If you are a member of one of the QLD SUP clubs then you are automatically a member of Surfing QLD, as we are all affiliated.

I am not sure how it works for the clubs in the other states, though. Might be worth investigating...

Did some flights research for the West Ozzies who are considering heading over

Best option was Virgin at approx $560.00 return Perth to Goldcoast. Dates fri 28th and mon 31st.

Qantas was $667.00 return.

Jetstar was about $20.00 cheaper than Virgin but you have to collect and re-check your luggage at Sydney. Rather pay an extra $20 and not have the hassle.

Not sure how Virgin is with boards though?

Hey Rez, Virgin is fine with SUPs under 10 foot (3 meters). Jetstar Domestic - as far as I know - don't take anything over 2 meters.

I just booked fares and entered myself

I would also like to hear what it would take for say someone from WA to come over, what they are looking for and what they want to get out of it to make it worth while?

I think its out of your hands there Jacko though we appreciate the effort. It would be good if the airlines would make it cheaper for us all to fly in our own country!!!!!

Anyway I did some flights research for the West Ozzies who are considering heading over

I would LOVE to come over, meet and surf with all, but the fare is just too much for me for one weekend. Trying to talk the other half into letting me go still though.

Definitely fly Virgin. They are always very accomodating. I recently went Virgin GC - SYD then SYD - Tonga (and back) with no problems at all. I had an 8'10.

Its no different in Qld to any other state - if you want to compete in a sanctioned state titles (any kind of surfing) you have to be a paid up member of a state authority (surf' qld/nsw/vic etc)
I most certainly don't agree with it either and reckon its a total rip but please dont aim your criticism at Qld - its Aus' wide.

What are you guys on about???? What exactly are you saying is the rip off????

(1) If you are serious and want to compete for Qld in the Nationals this event will be utilised for selection of the Qld team. Those that are at that level, pretty much know who they are so to be eligible for the Nationals you need to be a Surfing Qld member.
(2) If your not from Qld, you can't compete for Qld so no need to be a Surfing Qld member, so no need to pay the additional membership fee.
(3) Being a member of a Stand Up Club does not give you membersip to Surfing Qld.
(4) Events like this take money to run. If you believe it's a rip off, I encourage you to become involved in the committee of your local stand up club to see first hand how much these sorts of things actually cost.
(5) For the love of the sport, for the progression of the sport? ? I am aware first hand that ROAR, Greenline, Surfing Qld and select others are doing absolutely tonnes of work for the progression of the sport. Question is, what the hell are you doing?

Chris

I Don't really understand what your trying to say Gary. Are you saying your other half is better then all the other females sup'ers?(big call) or that her level isn't good enough to compete?
The Roar comp is designed for everyone to have fun over 2 days, meet and mingle, check out new gear, watch great supin etc..
I can assure you running a competition like this is not cheap and we are only a small business in the scheme of things.
If people don't support the comp, well then people aren't supporting the industry in general.
If There is no comps without industry minded people or business = no grow of the sport.
I find your comment very strange.
The more females that enter the comps the more they will get noticed, regardless of their skill level.
Some of the girls i know entering the roar comp can't surf well at all but they can flat water sprint their hearts out, and they are still going to give the surfing a go which is great to see.

She doesn't have to enter at all but i feel there's no need to discourge other girls from entering a fun minded comp. Remember you don't have to be a Pro to enter, hope to see you there.

Comment by Gary is not explanied well - i think Gary should give a better meaning to his statement.
Its all about fun with like minded people and growing of the sport both male and female equally. Just the feeling of being fully stoked with completing and event whether race or toughing it out in surf conditions with your fellow supers!
Get amongst it i say!

Well Gary, got to start somewhere.

If your wife is as good as you are saying then she could provide motivation and inspiration for other girls to lift their standard or level. Then next year she may have more of a challenge and then in turn she will have to work on lifting her game.

You need to surf with people who are better than you to learn how to improve.

Angie and Jacko, good on you for organising a fun event that caters for the broader spectrum of SUP (race&surf). It is not easy to co-ordinate something like this. You are right it's about fun at the end of the day....

Hey Jacko , it says you cant enter the Amature division if you have entered a sup surfing comp before , i have only entered your event last year and dont think my level of surfing warrants me entering the pro -event , can i still enter the Amature event.

Thanks

Gary - if your wife is SO much better than the rest of us - then it would benefit the rest of us girls... this is more about supporting women in SUPs... its a new sport and I think its fantastic that roar has managed to get an ALL WOMENS division...(WELL DONE!!) and i think it would be more of a benefit to have her in it - to get numbers.. but also for the rest of us that apparently your 7 yo son can SUP better than..it will be great for us to learn and be challenged.. we need numbers and SUPPORT... its the only way your wife will get the competition she needs..

i think its great that roar have considered and supported a womens division - as ang said..there is girls that love the flat paddle and there is girls like myself who love the surfing element fo SUP... its a great way for us to enjoy our favourite element of SUP - i think its great that some of the girls are willing to give the surfing element a go... and vice versa.. this comp should be more about encouraging the progress of women in the sport rather than negativity.

I believe that Angie and Jacko are doing a great Job just holding the comp. The fact that have gone out of their way to include the women is a credit to them.

Having seen Shakira, Angie, Alison and others surf I will be sitting on the beach watching and encouraging the women, you might just be surprised at the skill level. If your partner is that good a SUPer then it would be great to see her in action.

The fact that there is a fun division is also a credit to Jacko and Angie, a large % of crew would just like to be included to have fun. The fun aspect and good spirit in my eyes is what sets SUP apart from other sports.

Otherwise we wouldnt do it.

Heey GaryRyan,

I agree with Angie, Sondra, Rez, Starlet and OG.
If your wife and son are so good then I say bring them along, let them compete. What can you lose? They can teach us something and in turn we might teach them something.
Personally, I think you underestimate the talent and skill level of many other Aussie women.
If you don't wanna compete its still a great experience, there are so many people to meet and learn from! I haven't been to many SUP comps but from the ones I have I've learnt so much!

Hi Gary, I'm not sure where you're coming from either, but I have to agree with the other girls on this one. If you mean by your comment that your wife's skill and effort is far beyond that of the rest of us girls, then it would be a great encouragement for the rest of us to see her surf and we could learn alot from competing against her. The competition is meant to be about having fun and I think it is awesome that Jacko and Angie have made the effort to include a girls division to encourage the girls who might be a little intimidated entering comps against some of the best guys in the country.

This comp is trying to cater for everyone - those who surf and those who might have more skill in racing. There are plenty of girls putting their EFFORT into this sport and SKILLS are improving everyday.

Without meeting us and seeing us surf, I don't know how you can judge that your 7yo son would easily beat us all, and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have the paddle power to beat some of the girls in the race as they paddle really hard. If he really is that good then I encourage you to enter him in the mens or amature divisions as it may well inspire more kids to take up the sport and progress.

If you and your family decide you don't want to participate in a friendly and fun competition, that's your choice, but don't try and spoil it for the rest of us who love this sport and are willing to put in the effort to progress the sport in the future.

Personally I think it's great to see so many girls - Jenny, Angie, Sondra, Kristi, Rez, Sue...and plenty more who aren't on the breeze - interested in competing in surf or race events and this is a good thing for the future of the sport.

That would be me!! I am a total kook in the surf..as seen at Noosa but I'm going to give it a crack. It's only pride you're losing so who cares. Give everyone a laugh..and more importantly learn to not take yourself too seriously and learn to laugh at yourself... makes live way more fun and relaxed.
