It's the responsibility of the operators of the surf camp to ensure that everybody has a great time when they are there.

It is wrong to automatically discriminate against SUP.

It's ok to discriminate against surfers who won't be able to handle the conditions, no matter what kind of board they ride.

It's ok to say the boat can only handle a certain size of board, if that is true.

It's ok to suggest to a prospective customer that they might have a bad time because the usual clients are arseholes.

Any decent surf camp should have enough boats and access to breaks that they can take people to breaks suiting their skills and equipment. If they can't do that it's not a surf camp ... it's going to some **** place that might have surf.

If the camp doesn't wanna accommodate or make welcome sups then that is their business and their perogative. I have been discouraged from a couple of camps over the years because I told them I was bringing a mal and I can happily hold my own on a longboard in most conditions (within reason). I didn't cause me to have a big cry and wanna run their camp down - I just went elsewhere and still had a good time. I don't agree or disagree with their attitude - it really doesn't faze me either way but I wouldn't wanna go there with a sup if they obviously didn't want me there - it would be their loss because I am a great guy and an amazing surfer (yeah right )

In pecking order it goes like this.

Shortboards first

Longboards second

SUP third

Longboarding is becoming more the norm now day's after copping sh-t for years.
SUP is fairly new,so IMO give it time and they will welcome you.

Also,it is worth noting that most surf camps are run on a lean budget and refitting boats to accommodate sup's verse the numbers is simply not viable ATM until the numbers increase. Also you would have to be a very good sup'er to surf some of the breaks on offer, where an average prone surfer could get away with it.

Mate I have grown up on the Gold Coast Champ and the pecking order is as I said it above.Check out breaks like Snapper and D-bah once dominated by shortboards now 50/50 long and short, maybe not D-bah as much but excepted. The sup numbers are growing and in time they/we will fit into the mix and be excepted as longboarders have.,Oh boogie boards dont get fed in my household,so they are way down the list way below sup's.

Not funny guys its reality here, simple as that.

As I said it will come.

All good points Billboard. I'm not having a cry (if thats what you mean) but more so thought it funny that someone would make a SUP comment like that, "except SUP's hopefully" and the "its too dangerous" call. I do understand his point that he would prefer not have SUP's and the "in case of an emergency" angle but I just look at the line-up of those breaks and need to go there.

I'm still probably going to end up in the Maldives cos my prone surf mates are keen but if I can suss it out hopefully I can change their minds.

Hey Mac, that is probably because of the waves up there being sand bottom point breaks. Down here the decent waves are ledging shallow reef breaks, on which a decent custom SUP is all over a Mal rider of similar ability on. Plus as DTM said the guys riding em come from a shortboard background and are used to taking off late over a gnarly ledge.

The time I surfed half decent Currumbin with Jacko, there were no Mals paddling inside him

B - I wasnt specifically having a shot at you mate and I do understand your frustration. I think the best way to open the eyes and minds of these people is to get a really good crew together who sup and surf and go there and impress the locals with good attitudes and skills and just see how it pans out. If they see you mixing it up on both sup/surfboard then I reckon you will be readily accepted and so will sups in the future. Like it or not people hate sups in the surf and we are not going to change that by saying "F you we will surf where we like cos the ocean is for everyone". I am not saying we have to lie down and give up but we have to be mindful of the fact that it is going to take a while to get accepted and that will only happen if we are respectful and our skills are up to scratch before we start sticking our necks out too far.

Yeah I lost interest but am keen again. I just emailed a couple places about accom and boat hire. It's no resort but
it could end up costing around $500 for the weeks accom including meals. I have them looking into a consecutive
day boat hire price for me and distance to boats from the accom.

I also have my travel agent looking into flight prices.

From London break/town you can surf there or even just paddle to other breaks. It's only about 1.5km to Cook Is. but
I wouldn't do it without a boat incase someone gets hurt.

yeah looks like an epic place i have travel to surf camps brfore and never even thought of asking if its ok to bring a sup i recon if you just rocked up 99% wouldnt care especialy if its under say 9"6 and a shortboard style one.
I find if you can ride the craft well it really dont matter what you surf. One of my best mates rides a goatie and im sure when he rocks up to places people must be like what da fark! But he totaly rips airs barrels the full card and then its all cool in the water.

Yeah I rekon the same thing.

Heaps of time I have felt peoples hate when I first paddle out and then they see you
get a good wave and the attitude changes. I'm not there to change attitudes but it
make the line-up a better/happier place and everyone can just get back to catching
waves rather than have a negative vibe.

Like Phill said as well, any surf camp isn't going to put you back on the plane after
you've paid the bucks!

I have been the only:
- telemark skier at a downhill resort
- paraglider at a hang gliding site
- windsurfer and kiter at a surf break
- SUP amongst a heap of short boarders

In each case people have been polite and friendly. I have heard comments directed at others but that guy is always an arsehole to everybody.

I'm not particularly skilful at any of those things. I never impressed people with my amazing skills (well, maybe sometimes ) I was just a reasonable person acting in a reasonable way and so was everybody else.

In real life the definition of sanity is the ability to self-regulate your internal dialogue. To not say the first dumb thing you think of. It's only on the internet that normally sane people feel the need to spout the first thing that pops into their head.

Wavepark right? I remember following your pre and post trip updates. Awesome!
Thats the place I want to go but don't really have the cash or the extra days.

I can only really do 7 or 8 days. Still time to earn more brownie points so see what happens.
