Found some great pics on the web that should help those who want to lay down some critical turns on a sup board. These pictures give a clear idea where we need to be placing our back foot... In order to expand our performance surfing on sup boards, this is critical foot position for the big hack...

Mick Fanning. Here's a good basic visual... These are little 5-11 to 6-2 surfboards that are absolutely tiny in comparison to what we are riding. Just minimal in comparison to the huge volume we are dealing with. Even then, look at where their feet are. Right on the tail. You will NEVER snap with any kind of quickness on a sup board if your foot is not right on the tail...

When you place a stomp pad on your sup board, put it all the way back. Approx 1" from the tail. Cut a hole for your leash plug if you have too. Coming off the bottom you won't need to have your foot that far back but in order to do a big turn off the top, especially in a steep section you have to place your foot all the way back so the arc of the turn is tight and quick. If it gets really steep it's easier to keep your nose clear on the way down too...

Last shot from the sequence in an earlier post... Foot all the way back and this turn felt really nice. Solid and in control. When you have speed, you can step all the way back and push hard...



The absolute minimum, basic first step to surfing at high levels is this tip right here. Hope this helps... By the time this thread goes away, everyone should be throwin buckets! Haha!

DJ, it evolved from the raceboard/DW program in 2010, out of which the 12'6 Hybrid was born.

This is how I saw it unfold....



This was one of the first prototypes of the Hull Hybrid. All the early boards were longer boards designed initially to be quick and stable for ocean racing and downwind. Of course if there were any waves around the boys would go surfing on these race boards.

Whammo! It was discovered that certain bottom shapes absolutely ripped it up in the waves. That was it. Race program - back burner. Surf program - priority one!



If you look closely you can see the water drops coming of the chine running down the rail. This was June last year.

Once they could smell the hint of a whole new level in both performance surfing and paddling, they switched their focus totally to developing the new shapes.

The new design is significant, so developing the concept through the whole range became the priority.

SO, to answer the burning question, the word is that we will see these longer Hull Hydrids roll out of production in Spring SPRING 2011!

Hey Blane, love the concept of the HR and by the looks of things you guys got it dialed in pretty good. I am very interested in getting a HR in about the 8-0 or less range.

What kind of volume does a 8-0 performance HR have? When can we expect those (performance) bamboo veneers in Hawaii?

Cool! You were already heading in the right direction for sure... Keep it going! Build it, surf it, build it, surf it, build it surf it... You'll find better rockers, bevel angles etc as you go... You'll also find the sweet width that you can stand on and how much you can take away off the bottom... There is nothing like the feel of hitting a turn in a steep section and the board doesn't dive or catch a rail... Go Lookie!

Nice Boards Blane. Check out Ben Aipa's Stinger from the mid 70's. He started the chimes in the boards and it is said to have been shared to him by a young Tunnel Boat Racer out at Sand Island during a race. Ben developed a new concept creating the chime, step bottom and stinger. The chimes work and create speed, quicker edge to edge and acceleration. I've been using it for 20 plus years and it's great to see you using it too. Good luck with your development.

Hey Sharpie, Ha Ha, too late for that! The boys are breaking new ground and it is the confluence of racing SUP's with high performance surfing that has lead to this new development. Hull Rippers is here to stay!

It is a little bit like Blane's 'pixie' nose on the current Rippers, it wont please everyone, except those who take their first critical drop and go WOW!
