forget all that stuff. how good does that standup look in probably the heaviest wave in the world. definately some places sups are worthy of being labelled high performance.

i've read they take off farther out and deeper than the normal takeoff area

ps a wave like that guy on the yellow board got- you would die a happy man

Epic waves thanks for posting

Hypothetical here: What if the shortboarder was whipped in by a ski is it still a drop in???

I would be ok with Poto dropping in at chopes and I sure as well would not even take off on the same wave as Kala at Sunset. Yes it matters who it is Legion.

Yeah, but he shouldn't be doing it in a crowd obviously*.

Certain locals' rights might give them carte blanche to do so, but it doesn't make it right in my book. Surely if you're that good you can get in a better position rather than just deciding "this one's mine" and dropping in with impunity.

*There was a photoshoot down at Supers middle/end of last year with Mick Fanning getting whipped in very deep with a crew of paddle-in surfers sitting in the normal spot. Yeah, the photos looked awesome, but he had no place whatsoever being there, doesn't matter who he is.

It was about 1 foot and low tide the day I did it!

Jumped off into about 10 inches of water on a low tide close out, no where to go so instead of the board washing over the top of me it came up the nose of it smacked me in the face. That's quite the swing arm on 9 foot of SUP!

Al least it was my board though, poor old Dan had a run in with someone else's!

The funny thing about the SUPG forum is you all feel some weird empathy with others just because they share the same sport. And woe betide anyone that doesn't share your views. If the picture showed two shortboarders, I'd say the same thing - kook dropping in. If it showed the SUPG on the inside and the shortboard dropping in, I'd say the same thing. If it showed the SUPG on the inside with Kelly or Mick or Taj or Jordy or Parko or Dane, etc, etc dropping in, I'd say the same. But if I dare say that a guy dropping in is a kook and he happens to ride a SUPG, some of you get furious. You really think that he's doing a good thing?

I really think you need to take the hint that pretty much everyone on the SUP forum has had a gut full of your s**t mate.

I've only been here a few months and I'm sick of ya. Can you just please stick to the shortboarding forum and leave the negatives out of SUP posts. All you every talk about is rules of the water, it gets old

Sorry Chopz I disagree in part with your statement.

It would be a very boring place without Legion and co.
In another couple of months you will stop taking the bait
also at the rapid rate of new sup'ers hitting lineups around the
country, who else is going to teach the newies the correct rules.

I agree as well. Legroin and Dogleg make this place interesting. I am as much for smoking Joints in a tee-pee in the nude as anyone but when it comes to forums they need a bit of juice every now and then.

There have been plenty of people who come on here and say they've just bought a SUPG and are looking at venturing into the surf for the first time in their life and where should they go and what should they do.

It's dangerous and leads to accidents and injuries at worst, and frustration and aggression at best. I cringe when I see it, every time, no matter who the perpetrator is. The only time I could possibly see it justified is when a serial snaker gets one back crew who've had enough. I've contemplated doing that myself on a few occasions but never followed through. Possibly that was what happened in this situation, especially if like hilly suggested the shortboarder was towed in (doesn't look like it though) repeatedly and the others had had enough. It still never looks good unless the viewer is fully aware of the circumstances.

Awesome photos! The airbrushing on most of the shots is a bit over the top though.

IMO it doesn't matter who you are, you shouldn't drop in.

However, a good mate of mine surfed Chopes when Laird got "that wave" and he said it was really hard to
avoid dropping in if you were "around" the right spot. You have to sit deep and if you commit to a few strong
paddles you can get in trouble pretty quick so you have to go. It's not a feathering lip coming at you like
most of us are used to, it's a thick slab coming out of deep water that pitches really quick.

Another thing to consider, we don't have the full sequence. Think about how many times you (on a SUP)
take off and bottom turn around a shortboarder who takes off and they end up on the inside of you.
This might have happened here but judging by the video I would say unlikely. Not out of the question though.

p.s. We need Doggie and Legion, well more so Doggie. They both have similar thoughts to most shortboarders
and there comments (most of the time) would make a newbie think twice and do some research on what to
do and not to do in the lineup.
