That's about as dangerous as it gets, some kook dropping in on a wave like that. And not like I'm ever going out at heavy Teahupoo, but if I did and got the wave of my life like that guy and the photogs were snapping away and my once-in-a-lifetime photo looked like that, well, I wouldn't be happy.

First and last photos are great.

Third photo, the guy to the far right.
Is that the SUP rider who dropped in? Looks like he's paddled for that one then changed his mind for some reason.

The guy 'sharing' on the SUP is Vetea "Poto" David. He was probably coaching him on which ones to take and how to ride the barrel properly as not many would have the experience as him out there.

'OK we'll take this one together, OK now grab your rail and aim for the channel, that's it. OK you're doing great. Good work.'

It doesn't have to be a bad thing you know..........

Legion,
You have really excelled yourself with a ignorance and a lack of knowledge of what you are talking about. That "kook" is Poto and if you knew anything about surfing, you would not be even using the word "kook" in the same sentence, let alone to describe this man.

You best impose a self ban and stop posting ridiculous comments and give all of us a break......[}:)]

"Poo stance" Poto? Yeah, I remember him. Good surfer in solid waves, Tahiti local, rude style. So the person justifies the actions?

Even non-surfers have heard of Kelly Slater, everyone loves him. It was headline mainstream news every night around here when he was in town. But when I see him drop in on someone in a video I think the same thing - what a kook. I fail to see how who someone is determines the validity of their behaviour.

You are kidding me, you talk about it like you were there and assume that he intended to drop in?

Have you thought that maybe he had already started paddling for it before he realised the other dude was going to make it? Don't think its the wave that you can pull out easy......and once your comitted, there is no going back?

I am guessing you have not ridden many waves if this has never happen to you???

As I said in another thread, I never paddle for something if it's someone else's wave. So no, the "accidental drop-in" doesn't happen to me. In fact, in the other thread I said I don't understand people's theory of "I'll just paddle for this just in case the other guy whose turn it is doesn't make it".

Being the recipient of people with this mindset happens all the time OTOH, and it's very frustrating.

I do that a bit. I will always paddle in but look before I do and if someone is on the inside I will wait until he is up then pull back, if he pulls back or falls I go! Cant see a problem unless he goes then I do and drop in, then there is a problem and its mine. Happened to me on the weekend, two mates on the inside so I let them go and drop in on each other I stayed out of it but I was right into the wave.

The funny thing about the SUPG forum is you all feel some weird empathy with others just because they share the same sport. And woe betide anyone that doesn't share your views. If the picture showed two shortboarders, I'd say the same thing - kook dropping in. If it showed the SUPG on the inside and the shortboard dropping in, I'd say the same thing. If it showed the SUPG on the inside with Kelly or Mick or Taj or Jordy or Parko or Dane, etc, etc dropping in, I'd say the same. But if I dare say that a guy dropping in is a kook and he happens to ride a SUPG, some of you get furious. You really think that he's doing a good thing?

Not defending anyone's actions-but it is Poto (who I do know personally, we were both at HB in the day and I represented him in Court once)-it is his island, it is his wave and it is his mate he's surfing with - I thought the same thing when I first saw the pic - BUT the kook etc. comments really need to be expressed in context and not sprayed about like you're spitting the winkle....
