Lacey's ,makaha, sorry I don't think so. How can traditional surfboard design show the way to the new breed of SUP's ?. Pointy nose SUP's are not blown up short boards. they may look like it but they're dimensions are completely different. If you wanted to scale up a 6 foot short board to 8 feet and my maths are correct, then the width would go from about 20 inches to 24 inches. Nobody is riding a board that narrow . In fact the trend seems to be going wider. And thickness? if you scaled up a 2.5 inch short board up to 4.5 inches in thickness the length of your SUP would be about 11 feet. I think the pointy nose SUPS look like short boards but aren't. My point is that all bets are off when it comes to designing a surfboard that the rider stands on in flat water and with a 4" rail thickness. Some of these designers seem to have really got something going and that's a huge thing but scaled up short boards I don't think so. Log

At last - some intelligence to this topic - thank you.
Across the planet, MOST people are still paddling sups with a fuller outline and most are doing it in flatwater and not in the surf. I am still not convinced, as are many other people that pointy nosed sups are the answer to high performance supping. I am sure that half the reason for the pointy noses on sups now is due to the fact that so many shortboarders are getting into it and they are still too pig-headed to admit that the sup is a bloody longboard ! or in the case of you guys on sub 9' sups - a bloody mini mal ! and as such you have to have a pointy nose so that you can delude yourself into thinking that your sup cant be a longboard because it has a pointy nose.
I ride shortboards/mals and sups and they are all so very different and try as we may to make that perfect hybrid that crosses from one form of surfcraft into another they will never be as good as the truest form of their breed. Why can't we just embrace the particular form of craft we ride and stop trying to make it something its not. If you ride a very small and high performance sup, why not call it a high performance sup ? same as those of us that ride high performance longboards because they surf like shortboards BOLLOCKS ! longboards don't surf like shortboards and neither do sups no matter how much we try to kid ourselves. The only thing that surfs like a shortboard IS A SHORTBOARD. I am not bashing sups, as I have said I ride all three forms of board and love each one for their own special feel in the water and on the waves and I embrace those differences.

I agree and well said on both parts

Finally, you worked it out.

Honestly really though. Here's a conversation for you. Murray Bourton, legend surfboard designer, shaper of all sorts, all round legend and personal friend of mine. Casual paddler on SUP. He is checking out my Woody Jack and says......... wait for it. "Geez, it's just a blown up shortboard isnt it??" My wife sees Jackson closes McT and says wow, that's a big McTavish Carver. She doesnt even surf but she can even see that people are just blowing things up.

If it looks like a shortboard and surfs like one than what is it? Call it pigheaded but Mals are Mals, if a board has more nose rocker than tail, hard edges that roll to soft right in front of the fins and have a single double concave it's a shortboard to me. Just to clarify though, a shortboard these days really isnt just a pointy nosed 6'2 x 18 1/4 rounded square, take a look around, weird stuff is happening.

This subject is like spanking the monkey with a cheese grater; slightly amusing, mostly painful.

You guys just like to think your re-inventing the wheel, you don't even need to.......

If by "you guys" you mean longboarders, then I don't see your point. We are the ones who aren't trying to re-create anything, we are just happy with our lot and aren't trying to convince the world that our boards are something that they are not. Just out of curiousity - a 9'6 Hawaiian gun looks like a big shortboard too - is it ??

As far as I can see, and after looking lots of SUP pics the shorter ones have a definite shortboards outline but as far as saying they are blown up shorties, yea na, like Billboard said its not possible.

I think you're wrong-at least as far as my 808 LSD (Luke Short Design) is concerned-it's a LOT like a blown up shortboard, through plan shape, foil, rocker, nose and tail lift and the concaves through the bottom.

Shortboard I am currently riding:

6'2 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2 80's style speed machine.

SUP

9'3 x 28 3/4 x 4

Rough calc: multiply my shorty by 1.5 and all that is different is the thickness that ends up at 3 3/4. Allow a little extra thickness to stand up on rather than lie down to paddle.

I am not Albert Einstein but when you compare the outlines, rails and rockers, multiply by my 6'2 by 1.5 at every point they look pretty similar to me.

I feel like i'm taking crazy pills. How hard is this????

Same applies with me:

My shorty is a 510 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4.

My SUP 808 x 29 x 4 1/4

AND my SUP is remarkably similar in it's 'look' to my short board.

hey guys, this is fact. dales 8'10's and all the other sub 9' ers and a lot of the mid 9's were taken from one of dales popular shortboard fish designs on his files and BLOWN UP. that is a fact. sure there were refinements as one would expect. the modern performance short board sup has a shortboard background like it or not- where else would it evolve from. i still believe the trick is to make um stable and handle well . interestingly most of those involved with the making of sups/ surfboards seem to think they are related.
and no sup is going to surf like a true shortboard, but most people on sub 9' sups are trying too get as close as they can
cheers

dis- surf dc's, but currently on a psh which is so dam close to a shortboard shape. i'm getting strangers coming up to me in the carparks saying as much

well i not about to commit hurray curry cos my shaper is not famous and I am under some spell trying to be driven by the industry that the only people who shape a decent stick, used to be top surfboard shapers.

look a tully and blane chambers, great shapers, did both shape for ASP surfers?

There's no doubt about it that shapers everywhere are using their shortboard plan shapes to design this new generation of SUP's. But are they doing it for any other reason than to appeal to the 18 year olds that inhabit the bodies of many 50 year old surfers that buy SUP's. I want someone, maybe a pro shaper to answer these design problems, someone who knows what they're talking about.... I don't. Anyhow , here's my question: Starboard 6' 6" (the impossible). It looks like no other surfboard. So how can they claim it as a true high performance board when it is so different from the masses of other HP boards out there. Surely someones going down the wrong track.

this is a total crack up !!!
there are to sides to surfing sups one is a shortboard style sup which guys are surfing like they would on there shortboard and the other is a malibu style where guys are surfing as they would on a mal. some sups most actually try to place there baords somewhere in between and then there are a few specific designs that are for shortboard style surfing only, this is only a few core amount .
