My son is 13 and is giving us a hell of a time at the moment and that's got me dreaming of a better life - I want to move somewhere else. It's got to be somewhere in Australia, where there is good food, good surf beaches close enough to civilization - so you can work, get good schools and healthcare, but also not over run with tourists. Margaret River comes to mind, mid and south coast of NSW also sound very appealing.

Ok come on, let me know your secret spots where you are living now or dream of living one day.

I might be wrong but isn't Melbourne the second most livable city in the world? ...after Vancouver.

Oliver ... move somewhere nice and you only cop tourists for part of the year. The rest of the year it is all yours and your new mates.

Sandon Point is a good secret spot

Melbourne may be the second most livable city for some, but you can trust me on this at the moment it's not very livable here for me. I've spent a lot of time around Inverloch, but that town hasn't got it's act together, it seems torn between becoming a retirement town and a summer tourist mecca and it just doesn't work as a full time destination. In winter it's dead and in summer it can't cope. I think Anglesea, Lorne is a lot better but similar. Flinders could be ideal but then I'll have Peter Reith as a neighbor.

Easy to answer that one....East coast somewhere between Pambula/Merimbula and the Gold Coast. You'll have probably 100 options. Tourists are hard to get away from though...

Good luck, it's just a decision away. We have 4 kids and moved from Syd to GC a couple of years ago.

GC is unreal....

A good friend moved to Crescent Head in 1984 - was a happy place but he hates it now - gone are the holiday crowds, now a must stop for most on their east coast sojourn and totally over run ALL year.

Angourie was once a haven for those escaping but it seems a joke these days with mansions and crowds - Byron is still my favourite place to stop by and just as good after a fix of The Pass to leave it behind and I'd reckon I'd give up surfing rather than have to deal with it every day.

Anywhere that you have a roof over your head, work and access to water is a good place though and from living on the Goldy for 3 years in the mid '90's I learnt never to move to a holiday destination as it's never as good when you live there as opposed to when you holiday'd there.

That Sandon place is getting a mention a bit - sounds fun - where is it ?

I hear ya froggo, but man it has changed soooooooooooo much in the last 10/15 years and not for the better. Sure we have great waves and climate but its full of metro's ,drugs, hookers, rev heads and dodgy people keen to make a dollar at any cost, sorry the place sucks.

I've been going up to the GC and Northern NSW for years. 10 years ago I may have put it on my list but I don't get the same vibe now.

Ocean Grove could be good, never really spent any time there.

Yeah I know. They put fricken barbeque sauce on them. What the hell are they thinking? I reckon they only figured out how to make a coffee five years ago. And they can't cut hair properly. The last haircut I got up there pretty much wrecked my life.

Although the hinterland is still pretty good...... but for how long?

Sandon Point at Bulli, a northern sub of Wollongong which is about 70 odd k's from Sydney. We almost moved there thinking we would still have access to Syd but still get the Seachange feeling. I was at Sandon Pt at xmas checking out those amazing old boatsheds. We decided on the GC purely because of the warmer weather and aquatic options.

Seriously, I don't think anyone SUP'ing on the bay or generally minding their own business is getting knifed. Avoid the idiot CBD night clubs and you should be fine.

1770 also looks the goods. I've done a few trips there. It's isolated, but very, very stunning. Worth the effort to get there at least once.

Best SUP wave could be St George in Geraldton on a big swell. Nice flowing wave that walls up then flows into deep water. When the wind isn't blowing though.

But that is avoiding the point really. How to deal with a 13 year old? Research shows there are three ways to parent.

Only one is effective.

The 3 ways are
1. Authoritarian. An example of this is. Parent shouts! YOU WILL NOT SMOKE CIGARETTES. IF I CATCH YOU SMOKING YOU WILL GET A HIDING!
Outcome= The child sneaks around to his mates place as soon as he can and has a puff. Ineffective

2. Laissez Faire. Where the child is allowed to find boundaries for itself. Often used by hippies and indigenous parents. Outcome=The child bares the burden of their own experimentation. Ineffective

3.Authoritative. The child is educated to the dangers of an activity and taught that the consequences will be something he alone must carry. Example. Parent to child. " If you wish to smoke it is entirely your decision" "However if you smoke you will stink". "It will make you ill". "It will cost you heaps". etc List all the reasons why you don't want them to smoke then allow them autonomy. Allow them to choose. This is amazingly effective.Your children aren't fools and will invariably make the right decision if they are educated to the dangers. If they are given no choice however they will choose to infuriate you

It seems to me that there is a default setting for most Australian parents and that is the Authoritarian version. Telling kids what to do and allowing them no input or choice in that decision is a sure way to reap rebellion and dissent. All you need to do is remember what it was like when you were growing up.

Coffs harbour......so many spots to choose from within half hour. Even in holiday season if you drive a little way you will get uncrowded waves.

South Coast somewhere around Ulladulla/Mollymook area. Some of the best waves in Aus (if you like reefs) heaps of setups - bugger all crowds and generally a mellow vibe.

I find the north coast too aggro and crowded and misses heaps of the swells we get further south. The sth is less developed as well. I am biased as me and the Family spend nearly every holiday down there.

So many great places to live.... Surfcoast in Victoria is also great.... Get out of the big smoke, you won't look back. If you need a job, just start with something like a Jim's Mowing Franchise. Or start up your own equivalent. Get some business cards made up, like 3,000 and drop them into local letterboxes.

Torquay, Geralton, Ulladulla area, Coffs, Evans Head, Minnie Water, Suffolk Park, Ballina, Cabarita, Sunshine Coast.... If you sniff around for property just inland from Burleigh/Coolie/Tweed you'll also do well.

My personal view on Margaret River is that it cops too much SW wind, which in onshore everywhere, but offshore at Bunker Bay... But there are fine waves when it is on...

Vic does get a little too cool in winter.

Rent before you buy.... Maybe even try 12 months in Margarets Area, and 12 months in region of Evans Head to The Tweed. Then choose.... in the process you will also have had a good look around other places.... It might disturb your sons schooling a little, but I would suggest you will look back fondly on that 2 year period... even if you move back to Melbourne....
