Long time friend Marc Haine steers Team Spidey onto this. Unfortunately they did not make it resulting in one member being taken away by ambulance and a canoe destroyed and unable to continue on in the semi-final. He did win the award for having The Biggest *alls of the day. This is a 22ft outrigger canoe with 4 people on board (including one female).

The 2009 Quiksilver Makaha Makahaki Winner Kekoa Aunae catching some air after hitting the backwash on a 600 metre ride. And he made it...

Holy sh!t how was the drop on the 4 man canoe , looks like they have 4/1 man canoes now

How nice are the waves when all the finalists are coming in and nice air by Kekoa , that backwash would be a hand full did you get any video of it.

Wow Sue
The 4 man outrigging surfing brings back some old memories of the surfers girls destroying a 6 man at byron about ten years ago. I'll have to see if harvey still has that photo. Have been loving your post and it has been helpful talking around the wife in getting over there.

Yer I noticed probably 85%-90% of competitors were on C4. Only others I saw who were not were Mel Pu'u (PSH), Keoni Downing (self shaped), Sam Pa'e (Pacific Rad Sports), Duane Desoto (Oxbow), Ikaika Kalama (PSH).

Some more pics... you can see how long the rides are from these pics. From way out the back (where they're tiny in the photo) to right in front of you (like the one of Greg Pavao). Gets really lumpy closer in when they start hitting the back wash from the huge shore dump. Good to watch.

Greg Pavao

Yes DJ..Sam was in the final and finished 3rd overall. He was really good to watch catching the longest rides all day. 500 - 600 metres from out the back. A really nice guy too. Very friendly and interested in your (my) deal. Very genuine and real.

I'm not sure Piros and wouldn't like to guess on this one. I guess some are sponsored and maybe seeing C4 are partly designed by Brian Keaulana who is a Makaha boy..?? Maybe they are just great boards !! But they were everywhere !!

Here is a link to a photographers website who got some great action shots of the Makaha event. Much closer up and from a side angle so you can see the size and power of the waves. Great shots.

Also some video of the event:-

I only have 2 days left on this trip. Not much more happening. Danny picked up the c4 Sub Vector yesterday to trial for the last couple of days. I can post some pics of that if interested. Otherwise we're waiting for the wind to co-operate over here so as to maybe complete another 8 mile Hawaii Kai downwind run.

Have a great day where-ever you are...

Do you get the feeling that the outrigger guys have not clearly thought through this big wave surfing thing?

I see lots of wipeouts and neck braces and spinal boards and ambulances and heads wrapped in bandages. Not a lot of actual surfing going on.

Here's a pic of the new C4 9'3" Sub Vector for those who haven't already seen one. It's for the bigger heavier boys who want a shorter board but is also popular here with the ladies. A little wider and very stable. Danny is 100kg's and 6'3" although in this pic if the board is 9'3" then Danny may have shrunk ??

Here's how you store your boards over here if you live in a high rise building...

Thanks DJ...I'll have to look at it when I get home. For some reason my lap top is not loading it unless it's just slow.

Well nothing left to report here guys...but what a great trip and a great time of year to come over. Plenty of races and events and perfect weather and winds. Our last day and it's always spent returning toys, demo boards, demo canoes, picking up paddles to take home and of course packing.

Hope you've enjoyed the thread. It's always good to share great experiences with others.

Maybe I'll write "Hawaii Updates Part 2" in April when we come back. My friend from Kauai and I maybe entering the Maui to Molokai Relay on SUP. Just gotta go home and start 3 months of training for it. And I may need to bring a nanny over as Danny will be racing also on OC1....any takers ??? Bye for now.

Thanks Champ...you're on for the nanny job as you're the only applicant. LOL.

We're home now and wow how's the heat ?? 41oC in Sydney late yesterday and muggy as ever here on the coast this am.

We ended up buying the C4 demo Sub Vector and bringing it home. We had to buy yet another board cover for it to get it back and I don't think we really need to keep it as we have others. I'll check with Danny when he gets in from paddling (only home for 10 hours and he's already out there) but I think we''ll try and sell it.

We could only get an 11'6" at such late notice. It's a Dekine paddled board bag. If anyone is interested send me a PM. Thanks for reading.

What size board will you be paddling if you do the Molokai challenge ? and I hope you can keep us updated with your training as I'm sure we will all be giving you heaps of encouragement for such a big challenge

Would really like to challenge my self like that one day..... but I'll build upto it still learning the ropes for distance paddling

We will be in Hawaii in Sept , in the Waikiki area so if you could give me some names of the SUP shops to check out .... would be much appreciated

Cheers

Awesome thread Sue. Thanks.

I just got back from a few weeks away with limited internet access and have only just now gone though all your postings - great stuff.

I especially liked your coverage of the Makahiki event. There must have been some great surfing with the likes of Tom Carroll and Blane Chambers getting knocked out in the first round!

Boylos...We'd love to do the race on a 16' Race Board with a rudder system. Not sure yet what, where from etc. So I guess we'd be classified as "Open/Unlimted". It's hard to find out info about this race at the moment.

In Waikiki you can hire SUB's from Hans Hedemann Surf Shop in Waikiki. They are located at 2586 Kalalaua Ave opposite Kapi'olani Park. Ph: (808) 924 7778.

Or definately check out Wet Feet at Aina Haina Shopping Centre. About 15 mins drive East from Waikiki. They have a huge range of demo boards for hire including distance racing boards. You'll love this shop. They have everything SUP. Ph (808) 373-SURF. www.wetfeethawaii.com

Rodriguez... Well training starts tomorrow for the Maui to Molokai. I don't know much about this race as I have never been to Maui. All I know is it is 26 mile from Flemings Beach on Maui to Maunakakai Pier on Molokai. It's not the 35 mile Molokai to Oahu that many of you have heard of. But apparantly it's downwind the whole way and can be done as a team of two which is what we intend to do.

We just want to enter to complete and experience the event. We're not going over with huge expectations. Having only paddled the Molokai channel 4 times in an outrigger, I'm only guessing that training would be similar. Lots of distance, distance and more distance. I plan to start squad swimming twice a week which I found unbelievable in the outrigger days for stamina, strength, endurance, power weight lose etc. The fittest I ever did Molokai I swam 3 x week for 4 months leading up to the race as well as paddling and running.
I have 8-10 kgs to lose in 3 months so I hope to swim 2 x week, paddle 5 x week, run 2-3 x week. And maybe some yoga and lots of stretching. As far as diet..I need to eat less and plan to give up the alcohol. Putting this info out there to you guys will help me stay on track and motivated I think.

As far as the Sub-Vector is concerned, Danny loves it. He said is surfs like a short board but is still really stable while waiting for waves. I only had one quick so on it in Hawaii and am only learning to SUP surf so am not good on board reviews at all. I found it really fast on the take off and it usually left me on the back side of the wave as it enjoyed the face A bit too fast for me. But I'll keep you informed when Danny goes out and what he says about it.

Casso... Glad you liked the thread. The Makahiki was special to watch. A real highlight of the trip. Met some great people over there.

Sue, i did that race on an OC1 in 2006 and the tips given to me by the locals were to stay out wide in the channel as much as possible, especially after the half way point on the map above. Otherwise you end up in the "shadow" of the point and lose the wind and the swell. Yep, i ignored the advice and went in close and encountered the "shallows" big mistake. It was flat, hot and windless all the way to the finish then. Leave the turn in to the pier till the last moment.

Talk to rowdy, he also did it in 2005.

This was my actual GPS track , as you can see i came in too early just after the point and missed all the good water. You can see the speed drop off in the speed chart on the left below

Thanks SUE for the info will check them out for sure

I'm doing distance paddling at the moment and weights, running ,and to help with your diet - alcohol I know its hard but I've cut back to having one JUNK day a week and have noticed the differance in weight loss .Disiplane is the key ! But your got enough motivation there so I'm sure your have no problems ..... Try it out!

Rambo...Cool map and advice. So it does pay off to be a techo! I'll chat with Rowdy and you before we go over.

Boylos...thanks for the advice. Yes decipline is the key and I find it hard unless I have a specific goal which is now this race. Thanks for your words and encouragement.

Rodriguez...by "yawing" I'm guessing you mean "turning away" ? I will ask Danny tonight but I do remember him saying after been on the Sub V twice that it turned away from the paddling side much faster than longer SUB's. He found after 3-4 strokes he had to switch sides to straighten up. I'll confirm this tonight with him and get back to you.

The claim by C4 was in reference to "other 9'3s" on the market. Yes it's true. At 9'3, anything will feel turny compared to longer models, but this one is way less prone to this issue. I've surfed the PSH and C4 9'3s. Haven't tried the Naish 9'3. I don't think there are any other 9'3s out there.

NC,not wanting to be argumentative but if you watch the Dave Parmenter vid ,he doesn't qualify his claim to be measured against other 9-3's .It's most other sup's ,which is why I was really curious. Rodriquez
