It's a great vid and he is very good..

But IMO we have some Aussies that are even better.

Yep, smooth, yep rips but.....
At the risk of starting a six page sh.t fight, no paddle transitions whatsoever. The only time he changed hands was to help pop the fins on a dish pan 360.
All that aside, maybe this vid doesnt show his full bag of tricks.....
Disclaimer: I realise this guy is a multiple world champ and could surf better than I ever will with the paddle firmly clenched between his teeth!!
Cheers

Do not see the advantage of paddle transitions unless on big waves to get more weight into a turn. On small waves it looks forced and delays a turn so it is away from the steeper part of the wave. Really liked his style apart from paddling down the line.

smooth. I really like watching him keep his paddle on his inside. Seems to connect with the whitewater perfectly. Nice post Surfer56.

gee i have never changed sides with the paddle. too weird for me. i'm too busy rotating my body position to be changing paddle sides.

to me its a comp thingie that says you have to do it, but it throws out proper recognised technique.

when guys put the paddle on the inside of a cutback 9 times out of ten they also drop their inside shoulder which is not good imo

Disagree with dropping the shoulder into turns, good idea I reckon.

On nice size waves I drag the top hand on the paddle in the face on backhand bottom turns trying to imitate (poorly) the little bloke below

Want to try on cut backs as well.

At the risk of being blasted by contest surfers of all descriptions, why does it matter whether he changes over with the paddle or not. What we are looking at is "Colin's" style of surfing. What we see is how "he" surfs. In my opinion he surfs really well, gets lots of speed, creates smooth flowing turns and seems to be enjoying himself That is "his style". To often people look for "sameness" and "conformity" instead of individuallity.
Surfing is about doing your thing not being like someone else.

hilly look carefully. he has dropped his hand, not his shoulder.

no pro surfer drops their inside shoulder.

turns are based on compression/extension. movement back and forth and 'rotation'.

he is compressed right over of his board at 'speed' using the hand for some balance.

to lacey

swapping sides with the paddle opens up a hole new world of extra extension of your upper body into your turn either coming off the bottom or off the top.....just saying........

get in front of the mirror at home lacey

and simulate this weird and yet so wonderful phenomenon

and remember is said simulate not stimulate

He might have the moves but nothing looks uglier than paddling across waves.

When you watch the best guys (like pie man) the paddle almost dissapears and does not look a crutch or liability.

Paddling across waves in my opinion is the Sup equivalent of surfing like an over excited Brazilian or Japanese.

Ps, I'd rather watch Pie man any day.

what the hell are they about!!!!!. the ultimate useless but point scoring move

might as well do a paddle twirl aka jacko's long ago vid

When he says dropped the shoulder he's talking about dropping it forwards. Watch anyone bog rail on a turn and you will see they have slumped the outside shoulder. This is clearly not doing that.
