Rocker would also be a factor in stability IMO.
Would someone advise on the rocker of the Hokua LE compared with standard Hokua please?
Also looking at the outline of the 2 boards the LE has a pin tail which to me would make the board less stable - comments please.
Unfortunately I could not get to the demo in Newcastle yesterday so comments from those that did demo would also be appreciated.
go testing!!
Regarding the Mana range, rocker wise how has it changed from the previous versions? Is the new 8?5 similar to the older 9' or have they gone to a faster rocker?
Thanks!
The 8'5" is super fast, hits full speed really early and carves awesome. All the boards surf different to the previous models. The main difference is in the outline and volume/rail profile. when a board is on edge this will be similar to having more rocker when carving, but keep good paddling speed for catching waves and transitioning.

The numbers are good to give you an idea for sure, and use it as a starting point, but nothing beats trying something for your self.
Actually, you need both: it is no use trying plenty of boards if you cannot compare your experience on it with its dimensions & shape, so that you can correlate the two, and get reusable knowledge from the experience, that you can share.
Also, beware of first impressions when trying boards. Some boards will seem too unstable by just trying them, but can feel quite comfy once getting used to them.
What I found out helps the most stability-wise for takeoffs is the width at ~ 1' to 1'1/2 forward of the handle. This area can make the difference between an easy board and one where you will miss a lot of takeoffs if not hyper focused. And nothing is more frustrating than falling on take off.

Width there inhibits the board from doing man turns!
If you can paddle out without falling off, then its your fitness/lack or correct technique making you fall on the takeoff.

Or, more often than not, lack of attention. Some boards you can take off reliably anytime, but have a high risk of digging a rail if distracted by something (priorities, guys in the impact zone, chop, ...), whereas the stable-in-the-takeoff will require less "micromanagement".
What I wanted to say (to add to JB points) is you can have boards that are less stable all-around (narrower), but with which you will make your drops most of the time (volume & width repartition), which is quite important... falls while waiting wont ruin a session.
Colas, your understanding of the English syntax has improved remarkably well in the last 6 months and your vocabulary is outstanding, but for me........ 'get board, stand on board, take off on board, turn board, fall off board, paddle board back out and do it again. HAVE FUN ON BOARD!" The science of SUP![]()

. I prefer the neanderthal approach to the Abert Einstein approach. In saying that though I think you should write a book about Supping because you seem to know the answer to everyones questions and god knows we need a reference book to settle the inane arguments we have on this forum. The first chapter could be about always looking to the inside of the breaking wave and not dropping in!!! Two questions though. How many SUP boards do you have in your quiver and have owned? And what does volume & width repartition mean?![]()

'bout time Naish updated the Glides and Javs on their site...wouldn't mind seeing some proper deets on the new 14 and 18

I agree, I'm in the market for a new paddle too. I've seen one (I think an LE) that one of the local guys has here that looks pretty sweet, but want to see all the options before I lay out the big $$$.

Leroy,
It may just be my humble opinion but I honestly think that Colas demonstrates a lot of common sense in what he says.
Ozzie
some of you guys have more dollars than sense.
the boards Kai Lenny been ripping on for the last 2 years are good boards so are the boards Kelly Slater been winning on.
if you have last years board keep it and save your cash dont be swept away with sales hype.
flame away.![]()
you seem to know the answer to everyones questions
Well, I have the same problem in my native language too: basically I always try to take my personal experience, and try to understand why things happened this way, to try to correct things the next time to see if other experiences confirm or infirm, and compare with other people "theories". Alas, it often sounds as a know-it-all set of rules, but be assured that my "theories" are often evolving when confronted to experience :-) (and confronted to other people ones).

You mean ... the stickers on the boards? :-)

Colas. No need to defend your highly articulate explanation of water displacement and the corresponding skills required to create sufficient inertia on a low litreage board when catching waves.
I really meant no disrespect to you.![]()

My post was seriously meant as a complement!!![]()
. I remember a couple of years ago you sometimes had words in the wrong order. You don't anymore in fact you're one of the most articulate contributors to the forum. You have an amazing knowledge of the physics and technical aspects of SUPPING.![]()
![]()
The questions I asked were serious. You must have had plenty of boards in your time SUPPING. I saw a vid of you ripping on a short board so I know you are a very competent surfer and I really do want to know what width and reparition mean??? My apologies if I sounded judgemental and made my post imply a sceptical evaluation of your experience and knowledge.![]()
I guarantee you there was no subliminal negative agenda intended in my post!!![]()
Just picked my new 2013 Nalu 10.6 the boys at Ocean Addicts helped me out heaps. I tried last years 10.6.5 and really liked it. And a big thanks to JB at the Maroochydore Demo again with the guys at Ocean Addicts. Dropped in to Ocean Addicts today on the Sunshine Coast and just couldn't help myself. There they were (there was 2 of them) just had to get one. Will post some more pics soon after my maiden voyage tomorrow at Noosa. Thanks again to JB from Naish for all your advice and the Boys at Ocean Addicts for looking after me really appreciate it.
Will post a review shortly.
P.S. The board shows side fins from my Nalu 11.4 from which I am downsizing. Board comes with M7 as standard wich may be a bit light on (Flex) for a larger volume board. Will let yo all know how I get on as I don't mind mixing it up with fins to get it just perfect.
Stoked you jumped on the 10'6" Darren, you'll love it. I've been surfing mine for the last 2 weeks while the Van is away and having a ball. Thanks also for all the chat.
There is some small changes to the Javelin LE's, mainly in volume distribution and thicknesses, but nothing overly major. If it aint broke......
Enjoy ![]()

Thanks DavidJohn I have been here a lot longer than my first post I can assure you. I have read a lot of your topics when reviewing my decisions to purchase boards. Have you still got your Hokua?
Now into my second season as a SUPer and am acquiring a small quiver I have the 11.4 Nalu, the 10.6(2013) Nalu and the Fanatic Allwave 9.2 (wifes Board) but my shorter board for surfing she just doesn't know the real reason I bought it
Had some Hell fun on the 10.6 this morning on the sunny coast lovely sunny winters day with small waves coming into a high tide early just glorious!
My review of the 10.6 = DAMM GLAD I GOT IT! Watched a lot of vids, read a heap of reviews, compared 20 different boards, demoed same still came to the same conclusion. Great all rounder with way more performance.
Love It
Thanks to this forum that has been such a great help to my SUP experience. And a Hats Off to JB from Naish here in Australia who I have met twice and annoyed the hell out of him on a demo day up here with Ocean Addicts. You sure know your stuff and I cant wait to get the 8.5 Mana that thing looks sick!
Hey JB
Went for a surf on the AllWave again last week and that same thing happened again!. You know where the fat rail gets caught on the wall and flips the board vertical so you land on the rail with your ribs! F@#$K that hurts. My apologies for the profanity but I am seriously over that. BIG NOTE TO SELF, NO MORE FAT RAILS When do the smaller Manas arrive? That new shape is just awesome and can't wait to get my hands on one
Where is any info on a 26 wide LE?
They are doing both the 12'6 and 14 in a 26" version.
As recommended I will go to the DSS demo in the morning as I am very keen to try the Hokua 8' 10" 2014 LE but will need to demo in surf, I will post my experience.
Hey Darren,
Our next shipment of boards arrives Monday week (19th) if all goes to plan. There is Mana's in that one, but we are totally sold out, so make sire you put your name on one of Ocean Addicts.
Enjoy,
JB
