There has been a it of grief on here lately. It's not the first time and despite that we've gradually built a place of learning, tolerance, support and fun. Interpersonal conflict, online forum conflict and trolling are common phenomena so I asked Sensei Google for some accumulated wisdom on the topic.

Here's a nicely written article:
www.webroot.com/au/en/resources/tips-articles/you-cant-win-an-argument-with-a-troll

but this one, written by an ex-troll, is the best I read in my short research:
99u.adobe.com/articles/25151/dont-feed-the-haters-the-confessions-of-a-former-troll
Good advice for real life living too!

The news paper/s trolled Joe Hockey calling him "treasurer for sale" and Joe took exception and got awarded $200,000 in damages.

One must be careful about what he/she posts on social media.

A young guy in the U.S. has had his life ruined by being branded a paedophile because his underage girlfriend sent a nudie of herself to his phone and he got caught with it.

No, he is not a paedophile. He just got caught up in a ridiculous situation where through a technicality of the law he ended up on the register. Sorry, I do not have the original article to post. Google???

As far as I can recall this is the first time this has happened in the sailing forum and it really is a pity. I have not seen a thread deleted before either.

It looked last night that the situation had settled down but someone has pushed the issue.

Everybody needs to be mindful of the forum rules, particularly Rule 1 through to Rule 50.

Rule 1...........Keep it fun.

Rules 2 to 50.................Refer to Rule 1.

Below is a copy of a warning of another forum (industry) that I regularly visit. Moderation on it is very common as in many many posts everyday. The forum owners have found themselves in legal trouble as have individuals. They take no prisoners and there is not much wiggle room from straying too close to the edge. You are not immune to the law in these types of forums.

NOTICE: You are responsible for the content you post. This is a public forum. Treat it as if you are speaking in a crowded room. Recent high-profile defamation events illustrate that there are ways in which third parties can force personal data, including contents of personal messages, to be released by bulletin board owners. Be careful - libelous/defamatory posts can and have landed members in legal hot water. [forum name]will not guarantee your anonymity in such situations.

Actually the claim was made Not against either of those head lines, it was about a Tweat with just the headline #treasurerforsale. By one of the papers. It was deemed in court that the headline on its own was defamatory/missleading and he was awarded the money for that. That has set a precedence about social media and its promotion moving forward

As for the pedo claim, a mate was all excited a few years back when he was sent the picture of the young girl at the centre of the St Kilda scandal. He quickly deleted it once i warned him, technically that is child porn

It's a pity. But naughty children will be put on detention and the teacher usually doesn't care who started it. I must have missed some of the action I think.

Wasn't the ferro fiji Len thread deleted?

May I ask who ?

I find the best way to deal with people on forums who annoy me is to tell them to go to hell but do it in a way that they look forward to making the journey

In reality though it is not worth getting upset over what someone types because it is only a forum and not real

If they really upset you and you are a Mormon like me you can find out where they live and send the missionaries around to teach them the gospel

I was suspended for abusing frant. My world came.crumbling down.
He then.got.my.new.profile.queen bee suspended. Such a snitch.
This forum doesn't really serve a purpose. Its a place where people pick on each other and egos battle it out with their stories and big words. Barely any creative juices flowing.
Im a member of a royal enfield motorcycle forum for years. Complete opposite of this. Everyone on that site learns helps and shares. Noone cares about a spelling/grammatical mistake. I posted something on seabreeze a while back about a grib file and said that it could be a cpu hog. 1 member had then taken screen shots of the programne and his computers cpu diagnostics and had to tell me i was wrong. The point of the post was a great weather modelling programme. But it was then turned into "your wrong im right" and the focus of the initial post was lost.
This happens here all the time. Its no fun. You cant learn grow and share that way.

in my experience forums that are largely unmoderated are the most interesting to be around, as people get to show their personalities. however unmoderated forums regularly go through periods of implosion when people lose perspective and get carried away.

anyway, i haven't been here long but there are clearly lots of friendly, knowledgeable and helpful people around.

to be honest i find it strange that you express a dystopian view of the state of this forum, but then also choose to engage in abuse and sock puppetry.

as they say, it takes two to tango...

i've also never been on a forum where people spit the dummy and claim to be leaving so often!

HG got the flick until the 20 th. I hope he'll be back but somehow doubt it.

Not long age he sent me spares for my Taylor's cooker and refused payment. The man was a gentleman an enthusiastic and helpful member and as long as I have been reading the threads I've not seen him do anything untoward.

Frant got the flick for the same period.

For as long as I've been reading the threads he has come across as an absolute plonker.

Makes you wonder sometimes!

Yes your right we were lucky not to get get rubbed out i think ...................... if i do carry on as once before , my days here are numbered I would say .

Probably for the best . I just cant stand reading the self absorbed rubbish that flows from his posts ............... but while reading a thread , its

hard not to read his posts as well .

I have been reading posts on here for years ,and learning lots of stuff . And occasionally putting in my two bobs worth, its been great. But since he has been a regular on here, the tone of the conversation has taken a massive turn for the worse.

It's a real shame that one person can foul things up like that. As a lot of you know I contribute on heavy weather which is a bit like cage fighting at times but the sailing forum is about sailing and there really is no need for nastiness whatsoever. It is all about sharing a common enjoyment and I know I have picked up so many good tips on here.

My mum used to have a great saying, if you can't think of anything nice to say then don't say anything and we should keep it that way. A bit of gentle ribbing does no harm, guess that's why we've all learned to put up with Cisco but Frant, I don't know, has some sort of complex. I couldn't give a tinkers if he was the most accomplished sailor in the Southern Hemisphere there's simply no call for nastiness.

Like I said the best way to deal with it is ignore it. The other option is to alert the moderators right away if someone gets out of line and hope that they have enough interest in keeping the forum fun and informative. Although I sometimes wonder at some of their decisions. That said they did eventually manage to get rid of Milsy whom you could only give credit for perseverance. The problem with that is nobody likes snitches.

I often think that the best way to combat it would be to get rid of anonymity and use real names but then that has its risks.

And no worries Bannana!

Just hope HG comes back. I know he got a lot of enjoyment on the forum as many of us got a lot of enjoyment from his contributions.
