This is my first landyacht and it sails great. It is designed to go on a roof rack by removing the rear axles, but I've found it much easier to use a trailer as it takes at least 2 to lift it up there and I didn't like the idea of sand an salt falling on my car.

David Rose and the guys at Adelaide Landyacht Club were a huge help when I was building it and they are great to sail with at St Kilda Beach.

The sail by Ken O'Brien is absolutely excellent and very reasonably priced.

This is my (Vic's) second landyacht and it sails great.It is still being modified. The seat is made from wood (strip Built) I have started to build a third class 5.
I formaly sailed at Lake Lefroy and will sail there at every chance I get.
Next seasion I will be sailing with the Sandgropers.

The only problem that i have had so far it bending axels this problem has been overcome by using thicker class 12 bolts.

NOT CURRENTLY SAILING... "Sandpiper" it had the nick name of "Plastic Duck"

Comments - One of the original class 6 designs,
About 10 yachts were built in various colors.
Frond end was to light which caused problems for steering, this improved when a larger wheel (same as the rear) was added.
Rig was set to far back
Jib was added which increased speed but made steering and tacking very difficult on a soft surface.
The sail was designed to fit the mast flex.
The front end and rear axles unpluged from the fibreglass seat for transport in a small hatchback car.

this is the first mini that I built. . and was the basis of all the subsequent minis.
The next batch were all fold up yachts . they are all rather heavy but sail well. This yacht had a mast that offsets so the steering can pass by.

Later sails were a lot more powerful and this has led to the wood and fibreglass body to crack internally. these photos were taken just before the yacht was retired from active service and stripped for her parts.
She has a perfect race record winning 8 races from 8.
her longest sail was a run to the south end of lefroy followed by a 45km downwinder to the old clubhouse. she will be missed but the new yacht uilt from her bones will be a beauty.

the chassis core is a 3m length of NQdrill rod ( cold drawn tube) with the axle tubes and front chassis tube of NQ core tube,also cold drawn, sized to fit inside the NQrod. overall weight of this yacht is 109kgs. not bad considering a class 3 yacht this size in carbon fibre weighs 100kgs

I dragged this one out and rigged it today. known and loved as PIGS MIGHT FLY she was built as a yacht for people to try out when they say "Iwant to sail a big yacht"
the yacht suits sailors to 5'8" and has hand steering for shorter sailors or to assist in a fast power turn. . The mast is heavily raked a 17degrees and the step is more than halfway back from the front wheel. this makes for a very stable platform and despite its small size the yacht is VERY difficult to tip and rarely lifts a wheel when sailing.Sail area is only 4m but the 1500 chord wingmast makes this a very powerful set up. Top speed to date is 100.0kph.further speed was prevented by lack of wheel balancing.
the mast uses a 'Radial Boom system' to control the mast to boom angle . this system was first shown to me by Ross Gamlin in 1987 and is the key to making such a small rig work well. Another important aspect of this yacht is the flexible rear axle that bend at speed and combined with the springy front tube makes the yacht 'Ride' the gusts then returns the stored energy as acceleration AFTER the gust hits

Club 88


In 1988 members of the Sandgropers Land Yacht Club in Rockingham, Western Australia developed the 'Club 88' land yacht within the international class 5 specifications.
This was done to provide a competitive land yacht of equal performance to other class 5 variations at a relatively low cost to give members the opportunity to participate in the competitions on an equal basis.
More than 60 Club 88 land yachts have been produced and have proven to be competitive in local, interstate and international competitions and remains the cheapest Class 5 land yacht in Australia.

Club 88 land yachts are not produced commercially and are manufactured using a jig held by club members.
They are produced from the materials specified under the class 5 guide lines and the sails are manufactured from templates held by the Clubs nominated sail maker.
The club’s yacht building committee build the basic yachts to order and the sailor then completes the fittings including seatbelts, sheet rope, pulleys, ratchet etc.
Some minor variations are allowed but the intent recommended by the club is to comply with the 'Club 88' specifications.
